Regulatory Change and the Quality of Compliance to Mandatory Disclosure Requirements: Evidence from Bangladesh
The present study investigates the effectiveness of changes in the regulatory environment on the
quality of compliance to mandatory disclosure requirements in Bangladesh. Statistical analysis of the
Mandatory Disclosure Index, as developed in this paper using annual reports of the exchangelisted
firms
before and after the changes in the regulatory environment, shows a significant improvement in the quality
of compliance during the more regulated time period. The size of the firm, the qualification of its
accounting staff that prepares financial statements and the reputation of its auditing firm have significant
positive impact on the quality of compliance. The analysis presented in the study point to two additional
important findings: lack of profitability of the firm does not seem to affect the quality of its compliance,
and the performance of domestic firms are at par with foreign affiliated firms as far as the quality of the
compliance is concerned. The findings reported in the present study lend support to the conventional
notion that well packaged and timed regulations can foster sustainable development in the overall reporting
environment of a country

An unusual case of penetrating head injury in a child
Penetrating head injuries can be the result of numerous intentional or unintentional events, including missile wounds, stab wounds, and motor vehicle or occupational accidents (nails, screw-drivers). Penetrating head injuries in children constitute only a small part of the total number of traumatic head injuries seen in casualty. We report a case of neuro-trauma who was operated in our institution. Patient, 4 years male presented in casualty on 15/01/09 with a iron rod penetrating into the skull
A rare presentation of Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome
The Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome (KTS) is a congenital disorder characterized by capillary malformation, varicosities and bony and soft tissue hypertrophy. This disease has several morbidities like bleeding, deep venous thrombosis, embolic complications and in some cases enlargement of limb that may require amputation. Vascular malformations are segmented and never cross midline. However, we came across a case, a 45-year-old male, who presented with varicosity of veins and deformity of left lower limb besides cavernous hemangiomas (port-wine stains) scattered all over his face, chest, back, gluteal region, groin and legs since birth. Multiple paravertebral soft tissue masses and bladder hypertrophy were also noted due to involving neurofibromatosis. Simultaneous occurrence of KTS and neurofibromatosis is rarely seen in clinical practice
Presentation and management of giant fibroid uterus in an adolescent girl

Its occurrence in females under the age of 20 years is not frequent. Moreover, its presence in the adolescent population has not been well documented. With the advent of high frequency ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging it is now possible to diagnose such cases at an early stage. Asymptomatic uterine fibroids can be left untreated as long as they are monitored closely. However, larger tumors usually require surgical treatment. Medical management by prescribing gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogue has been used to suppress estrogen production, thereby reducing the size of existing myomas to make them amenable to laparoscopic surgery. Selective embolization of uterine artery has been used successfully in the treatment of uterine fibroids. We came across a similar case of a large leiomyoma in a sexually inactive adolescent girl. She presented with a lump in her abdomen and without a history of menstrual disturbances or intake of oral contraceptives. Keywords: leiomyoma of uterus, fibroid uteru

Regulatory Change and the Quality of Compliance to Mandatory Disclosure Requirements: Evidence from Bangladesh
This study investigates the effectiveness of changes in the regulatory environment on the quality of compliance to mandatory disclosure requirements in Bangladesh. Statistical analysis of the Mandatory Disclosure Index, as developed in this paper using annual reports of the exchange-listed firms pre and post changes in the regulatory environment, shows a significant improvement in the quality of compliance during the more regulated time period. The size of the firm, the qualification of its accounting staff that prepares financial statements and the reputation of its auditing firm have significant positive impact on the quality of compliance. The analysis points to two additional important findings: lack of a firm\u27s profitability does not seem to affect the quality of its compliance, and the performance of domestic firms are at par with foreign affiliated firms as far as the quality of the compliance is concerned. The findings reported in the present study lend support to the conventional notion that well packaged and timed regulations can foster sustainable development in the overall reporting environment of a country
