    From God's home to people's house: Property struggles of church redevelopment

    Religious organizations participate in urban redevelopment in various ways including redeveloping their churches. While the literature has attempted to explain church redevelopment from different perspectives, what has often been forgotten is the fundamental characteristic of churches as property in cities. Drawing on the established scholarship of legal geography, this article argues that the lens of property relations offers an insightful framework to examine church redevelopment. By presenting a case study in Hong Kong, this article unpacks the property struggles of church redevelopment to examine how that resulted from the conflicting property claims and why these claims emerged. This article contrasts and analyzes the religious and market-driven values underlying these claims in the context of a property-led society like Hong Kong. To understand how urban churches transform from God’s home to people’s house, it is necessary to recognize the diverse readings of property. In so doing, this article invites scholars to re-conceptualize urban struggles from the property lens

    Comparing the effects of visibility of different neighborhood greenery settings on the preference ratings and noise annoyance responses to road traffic noises

    The impact of visual environment on human noise perceptions has always been under scrutiny. Two consecutive sets of laboratory experiments were performed for studying the effect of visual perceptions of different percentages of sea, greenery, and/or road views on noise-induced annoyance responses as well as preference ratings. Both experiments were carried out in a room purposely constructed inside an anechoic chamber to mimic the living room setting of a dwelling in Hong Kong. Video clips were projected consecutively onto the exterior window panel of the living room to simulate neighborhood views containing different percentages of sea, greenery and road. 82 and 58 participants were successfully administered in two experiments. Each participant was presented with 11 video clips and requested to respond to a series of questions regarding perceived noise annoyance and view preferences after presentation of individual clips. The responses collected from each experiment were employed to formulate ordered logit models to predict the probability of evoking a high annoyance response. Findings indicated that participants tended to prefer the presence of sea rather than that of either mountain or trees in views containing a trafficking road. Views containing sea would produce an attenuating effect on noise annoyance while views containing road would produce an aggravating effect. However, the size of the effects did not vary between 0% and 30% sea, or between 30% and 60% road contained in a view. Views containing dense greenery at a close distance would aggravate noise annoyance irrespective of form. However, when the percentage of greenery increased from 30% to 60%, the noise annoyance attenuating effect increased in the case of wooded mountain but decreased in the case of the more transparent tree clumps

    Molecular Basis for Cooperative Binding of Anionic Phospholipids to the PH Domain of the Arf GAP ASAP1

    SummaryWe have defined the molecular basis for association of the PH domain of the Arf GAP ASAP1 with phospholipid bilayers. Structures of the unliganded and dibutyryl PtdIns(4,5)P2-bound PH domain were solved. PtdIns(4,5)P2 made contact with both a canonical site (C site) and an atypical site (A site). We hypothesized cooperative binding of PtdIns(4,5)P2 to the C site and a nonspecific anionic phospholipid to the A site. PtdIns(4,5)P2 dependence of binding to large unilamellar vesicles and GAP activity was sigmoidal, consistent with cooperative sites. In contrast, PtdIns(4,5)P2 binding to the PH domain of PLC δ1 was hyperbolic. Mutation of amino acids in either the C or A site resulted in decreased PtdIns(4,5)P2-dependent binding to vesicles and decreased GAP activity. The results support the idea of cooperative phospholipid binding to the C and A sites of the PH domain of ASAP1. We propose that the mechanism underlies rapid switching between active and inactive ASAP1

    A 2-year prospective evaluation of the Prostate Health Index in guiding biopsy decisions in a large cohort

    Objectives: To prospectively evaluate how the Prostate Health Index (PHI) impacts on clinical decision in a real-life setting for men with a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level between 4 and 10 ng/mL and normal digital rectal examination. Patients and Methods: Since 2016, the PHI has been available at no cost to eligible men in all Hong Kong public hospitals. All eligible patients who received PHI testing in all public Urology units (n = 16) in Hong Kong between May 2016 and August 2017 were prospectively included and followed up. All included men had a PHI test, with its result and implications explained; the subsequent follow-up plan was then decided via shared decision-making with urologists. Patients were followed up for 2 years, with outcomes including prostate biopsy rates and biopsy findings analysed in relation to the initial PHI measurements. Results: A total of 2828 patients were followed up for 2 years. The majority (82%) had PHI results in the lower risk range (score &lt;35). Knowing the PHI findings, 83% of the patients with elevated PSA decided not to undergo biopsy. In all, 11% and 45% opted for biopsy in the PHI score &lt;35 and ≥35 groups, respectively. The initial detection rate of International Society of Urological Pathology (ISUP) Grade Group (GG) ≥2 cancer was higher in the PHI score ≥35 group (23%) than in the PHI score &lt;35 group (7.9%). Amongst patients with no initial positive biopsy findings, the subsequent positive biopsy rate for ISUP GG ≥2 cancer was higher in the PHI score ≥35 group (34%) than the PHI score &lt;35 group (13%) with a median follow-up of 2.4 years. Conclusion: In a real-life setting, with the PHI incorporated into the routine clinical pathway, 83% of the patients with elevated PSA level decided not to undergo prostate biopsy. The PHI pathway also improved the high-grade prostate cancer detection rate when compared to PSA-driven strategies. Higher baseline PHI predicted subsequent biopsy outcome at 2 years. The PHI can serve as a tool to individualise biopsy decisions and frequency of follow-up visits.</p

    隨著人口老化,居家安老成為香港社會重大的挑戰。政府多年來提倡「居家安老為本,院舍照顧為後援」的政策方針,透過加強社區照顧服務,以減少院舍入住率。然而,政策需要由家居環境、以至社區支援互相配合,創造可供市民居家安老的先天條件方能成事。本研究旨在探討香港推行居家安老時所面對的困難與挑戰。研究團隊訪問了30名60歲或以上、曾經或正在使用長者服務的使用者和19名從事長者社區照顧及支援服務行業的服務提供者,從不同的角度探討長者居家安老的狀況和社區照顧及支援服務的成效。 研究團隊綜合了長者居家安老的狀況,提出了幾方面的改進建議。在家居環境和社區設施方面,建議 (1) 政府應主動協助長者改善「居住環境」和安裝「緊急呼叫系統」,並(2) 建設合適長者的公共交通工具和道路設施和交通配套。在醫療層面方面,建議 (3) 資助有緊急需要的長者使用私營醫療服務、(4) 擴展醫療券計劃至購買坊間藥物和 (5) 改善普通科門診醫療預約系統和公開長者預約專籌的數量及其使用狀況。在長者社區照顧及支援服務方面,建議 (6) 檢視社區照顧服務券的宣傳和使用狀況、(7) 對長者家庭進行家訪,及早識別有需要個案和 (8) 檢視未來各區長者比例,規劃長者設施服務。 研究團隊分析了社福機構人員在提供長者服務過程中所遇到的困難後,提出了四方面的建議,分別爲 (1) 改進安老服務人員資歷架構和服務外包、(2) 簡化並加強服務資訊的宣傳、(3) 優化一站式服務平台及個案管理和 (4) 制訂長遠的安老政策方向

    Efficacy, safety and immunogenicity of a human rotavirus vaccine (RIX4414) in Hong Kong children up to three years of age: A randomized, controlled trial

    AbstractBackgroundA phase III, double-blind, randomized, controlled trial was conducted in Hong Kong to evaluate the efficacy, safety and immunogenicity of a human rotavirus vaccine, RIX4414 (Rotarix™) against severe rotavirus gastroenteritis in children up to three years of age.MethodsHealthy infants aged 6–12 weeks were enrolled between 08-December-2003 and 31-August-2005 and received two oral doses of either RIX4414 vaccine (N=1513) or placebo (N=1512) given 2 months apart. Vaccine efficacy was assessed from two weeks post-Dose 2 until the children were two and three years of age. Anti-rotavirus IgA seroconversion rate was calculated pre-vaccination and 1–2 months post-Dose 2 using ELISA (cut-off=20U/mL) for 100 infants. Safety was assessed until the children were two years of age; serious adverse events (SAEs) were recorded throughout the study period.ResultsIn children aged two and three years of life, vaccine efficacy against severe rotavirus gastroenteritis was 95.6% (95% CI: 73.1%–99.9%) and 96.1% (95% CI: 76.5%–99.9%), respectively. The seroconversion rate 1–2 months after the second dose of RIX4414 was 97.5% (95% CI: 86.8%–99.9%). At least one SAE was recorded in 439 and 477 infants who were administered RIX4414 and placebo, respectively (p-value=0.130). Six intussusception cases were reported (RIX4414=4; placebo=2) and none was assessed to be vaccine-related.ConclusionRIX4414 was efficacious, immunogenic and safe in the prevention of rotavirus gastroenteritis for at least two years post-vaccination in Hong Kong children

    Perception of urban park soundscape

    A number of studies have been initiated to explore how to improve the soundscape quality in urban parks. However, good soundscape quality in parks cannot be provided without a thorough understanding of the complex relationships among sound, environment, and individuals. As acoustic comfort is considered to be an important outcome of soundscape quality, this study investigates the relative impacts of the factors influencing acoustic comfort evaluation by formulating a multivariate ordered logit model. This study also explores the inter-relationships among acoustic comfort evaluation, acceptability of the environment, and preference to stay in a park using a path model. A total of 595 valid responses were obtained from interview surveys administered in four parks in Hong Kong while objective sound measurements were carried out at the survey spots concurrently. The findings unveil that acoustic comfort evaluation, besides visual comfort evaluation of landscape, also plays an important role on users’ acceptability of the urban park environment. Compared with all the studied acoustic related factors, acoustic comfort evaluation serves as a better proxy for park users’ preference to stay in urban parks. Hearing the breeze will significantly increase the likelihood of individuals in giving high acoustic comfort evaluation.     The New Application of UHPLC-DAD-TOF/MS in Identification of Inhibitors on β-Amyloid Fibrillation From Scutellaria baicalensis

    Literary evidence depicts that aggregated β-amyloid (Aβ) leads to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Although many traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) are effective in treating neurodegenerative diseases, there is no effective way for identifying active compounds from their complicated chemical compositions. Instead of using a traditional herbal separation method with low efficiency, we herein apply UHPLC-DAD-TOF/MS for the accurate identification of the active compounds that inhibit the fibrillation of Aβ (1-42), via an evaluation of the peak area of individual chemical components in chromatogram, after incubation with an Aβ peptide. Using the neuroprotective herbal plant Scutellaria baicalensis (SB) as a study model, the inhibitory effect on Aβ by its individual compounds, were validated using the thioflavin-T (ThT) fluorescence assay, biolayer interferometry analysis, dot immunoblotting and native gel electrophoresis after UHPLC-DAD-TOF/MS analysis. The viability of cells after Aβ (1-42) incubation was further evaluated using both the tetrazolium dye (MTT) assay and flow cytometry analysis. Thirteen major chemical components in SB were identified by UHPLC-DAD-TOF/MS after incubation with Aβ (1–42). The peak areas of two components from SB, baicalein and baicalin, were significantly reduced after incubation with Aβ (1–42), compared to compounds alone, without incubation with Aβ (1–42). Consistently, both compounds inhibited the formation of Aβ (1–42) fibrils and increased the viability of cells after Aβ (1–42) incubation. Based on the hypothesis that active chemical components have to possess binding affinity to Aβ (1–42) to inhibit its fibrillation, a new application using UHPLC-DAD-TOF/MS for accurate identification of inhibitors from herbal plants on Aβ (1–42) fibrillation was developed
