Extension of the Wu-Jing equation of state (EOS) for highly porous materials: thermoelectron based theoretical model
A thermodynamic equation of state (EOS) for thermoelectrons is derived which
is appropriate for investigating the thermodynamic variations along isobaric
paths. By using this EOS and the Wu-Jing (W-J) model, an extended Hugoniot EOS
model is developed which can predict the compression behavior of highly porous
materials. Theoretical relationships for the shock temperature, bulk sound
velocity, and the isentrope are developed. This method has the advantage of
being able to model the behavior of porous metals over the full range of
applicability of pressure and porosity, whereas methods proposed in the past

Spin Susceptibility of a 2D Electron System in GaAs towards the Weak Interaction Region
We determine the spin susceptibility in the weak interaction regime of
a tunable, high quality, two-dimensional electron system in a GaAs/AlGaAs
heterostructure. The band structure effects, modifying mass and g-factor, are
carefully taken into accounts since they become appreciable for the large
electron densities of the weak interaction regime. When properly normalized,
decreases monotonically from 3 to 1.1 with increasing density over our
experimental range from 0.1 to . In the high density
limit, tends correctly towards and compare well with recent

Kinetics analysis of quenching phase transformation of 1Cr13 steel by thermal analysis
Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to study the transformation process of 1Cr13 steel under quenching condition. The DSC curves were measured from 1 050 °C to room temperature at the cooling rate of 10, 20, 30, 50 °C /min, respectively. The Flynn-Wall-Ozawa method was used to obtain the activation energy of the transformation process of 1Cr13 steel under quenching condition. The kinetic mechanism functions of the transformation process of 1Cr13 steel under quenching condition were also investigated by Criado-Ortega methods. The results show that the activation energy is related to the phase transition fraction. It means the transformation process of 1Cr13 steel under quenching condition is not a simple one-step reaction but a complex multi-step reaction
Long-range forces between two excited mercury atoms and associative ionization
The long-range quadrupole-quadrupole () and leading dispersion
() interactions between all pairs of excited Hg() ,
, , and atoms are determined. The quadrupole moments are
calculated using the {\it ab initio} relativistic configuration-interaction
method coupled with many-body perturbation theory. The van der Waals
coefficients are approximated using previously calculated static
polarizabilities and expressions for the dispersion energy that are validated
with similar systems. The long-range interactions are critical for associative
ionization in thermal and cold collisions, and are found to be quite different
for different pairs of interacting states. Based on this knowledge and the
short-range parts of previously calculated potential curves, improved estimates
of the chemi-ionization cross sections are obtained.Comment: accepted in Phys Rev
Screening of patients with tuberculosis for diabetes mellitus in China.
Objectiveâ There is a high burden of both diabetes (DM) and tuberculosis (TB) in China, and this study aimed to assess feasibility and results of screening patients with TB for DM within the routine healthcare setting of six health facilities. Methodâ Agreement on how to screen, monitor and record was reached in May 2011 at a stakeholders' meeting, and training was carried out for staff in the six facilities in July 2011. Implementation started in September 2011, and we report on 7âmonths of activities up to 31 March 2012. Resultsâ There were 8886 registered patients with TB. They were first asked whether they had DM. If the answer was no, they were screened with a random blood glucose (RBG) followed by fasting blood glucose (FBG) in those with RBGââ„â6.1âmm (one facility) or with an initial FBG (five facilities). Those with FBGââ„â7.0âmm were referred to DM clinics for diagnostic confirmation with a second FBG. Altogether, 1090 (12.4%) patients with DM were identified, of whom 863 (9.7%) had a known diagnosis of DM. Of 8023 patients who needed screening for DM, 7947 (99%) were screened. This resulted in a new diagnosis of DM in 227 patients (2.9% of screened patients), and of these, 226 were enrolled to DM care. In addition, 575 (7.8%) persons had impaired fasting glucose (FBG 6.1 to <7.0âmm). Prevalence of DM was significantly higher in patients in health facilities serving urban populations (14.0%) than rural populations (10.6%) and higher in hospital patients (13.5%) than those attending TB clinics (8.5%). Conclusionâ This pilot project shows that it is feasible to screen patients with TB for DM in the routine setting, resulting in a high yield of patients with known and newly diagnosed disease. Free blood tests for glucose measurement and integration of TB and DM services may improve the diagnosis and management of dually affected patients
Radio Images of 3C 58: Expansion and Motion of its Wisp
New 1.4 GHz VLA observations of the pulsar-powered supernova remnant 3C 58
have resulted in the highest-quality radio images of this object to date. The
images show filamentary structure over the body of the nebula. The present
observations were combined with earlier ones from 1984 and 1991 to investigate
the variability of the radio emission on a variety of time-scales. No
significant changes are seen over a 110 day interval. In particular, the upper
limit on the apparent projected velocity of the wisp is 0.05c. The expansion
rate of the radio nebula was determined between 1984 and 2004, and is
0.014+/-0.003%/year, corresponding to a velocity of 630+/-70 km/s along the
major axis. If 3C 58 is the remnant of SN 1181, it must have been strongly
decelerated, which is unlikely given the absence of emission from the supernova
shell. Alternatively, the low expansion speed and a number of other arguments
suggest that 3C 58 may be several thousand years old and not be the remnant of

Radio Spectral Index and Expansion of 3C58
We present new observations of the plerionic supernova remnant 3C58 with the
VLA at 74 and 327 MHz. In addition, we re-reduced earlier observations at 1.4
and 4.9 GHz taken in 1973 and 1984. Comparing these various images, we find
that: 1. the remnant has a flat and relatively uniform spectral index
distribution, 2. any expansion of the remnant with time is significantly less
than that expected for uniform, undecelerated expansion since the generally
accepted explosion date in 1181 A.D., and 3. there is no evidence for a
non-thermal synchrotron emission shell generated by a supernova shock wave,
with any such emission having a surface brightness of <1 x 10^(-21) W / (m^2 Hz

Continuous quantum nondemolition feedback and unconditional atomic spin squeezing
We discuss the theory and experimental considerations of a quantum feedback
scheme for producing deterministically reproducible spin squeezing. Continuous
nondemolition atom number measurement from monitoring a probe field
conditionally squeezes the sample. Simultaneous feedback of the measurement
results controls the quantum state such that the squeezing becomes
unconditional. We find that for very strong cavity coupling and a limited
number of atoms, the theoretical squeezing approaches the Heisenberg limit.
Strong squeezing will still be produced at weaker coupling and even in free
space (thus presenting a simple experimental test for quantum feedback). The
measurement and feedback can be stopped at any time, thereby freezing the

Selective laser sintering of hydroxyapatite reinforced polyethylene composites for bioactive implants and tissue scaffold development
Selective laser sintering (SLS) has been investigated for the production of bioactive implants and tissue scaffolds using composites of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) reinforced with hydroxyapatite (HA) with the aim of achieving the rapid manufacturing of customized implants. Single-layer and multilayer block specimens made of HA-HDPE composites with 30 and 40 vol % HA were sintered successfully using a CO2 laser sintering system. Laser power and scanning speed had a significant effect on the sintering behaviour. The degree of particle fusion and porosity were influenced by the laser processing parameters, hence control can be attained by varying these parameters. Moreover, the SLS processing allowed exposure of HA particles on the surface of the composites and thereby should provide bioactive products. Pores existed in the SLS-fabricated composite parts and at certain processing parameters a significant fraction of the pores were within the optimal sizes for tissue regeneration. The results indicate that the SLS technique has the potential not only to fabricate HA-HDPE composite products but also to produce appropriate features for their application as bioactive implants and tissue scaffolds
