No evidence for a common blood microbiome based on a population study of 9,770 healthy humans
Human blood is conventionally considered sterile but recent studies suggest the presence of a blood microbiome in healthy individuals. Here we characterized the DNA signatures of microbes in the blood of 9,770 healthy individuals using sequencing data from multiple cohorts. After filtering for contaminants, we identified 117 microbial species in blood, some of which had DNA signatures of microbial replication. They were primarily commensals associated with the gut (n = 40), mouth (n = 32) and genitourinary tract (n = 18), and were distinct from pathogens detected in hospital blood cultures. No species were detected in 84% of individuals, while the remainder only had a median of one species. Less than 5% of individuals shared the same species, no co-occurrence patterns between different species were observed and no associations between host phenotypes and microbes were found. Overall, these results do not support the hypothesis of a consistent core microbiome endogenous to human blood. Rather, our findings support the transient and sporadic translocation of commensal microbes from other body sites into the bloodstream
Increased renal ANP synthesis, but decreased or unchanged cardiac ANP synthesis in water-deprived and salt-restricted rats
Increased renal ANP synthesis, but decreased or unchanged cardiac ANP synthesis in water-deprived and salt-restricted rats.BackgroundExperiments were performed to examine the effect of water deprivation and salt restriction on ANP synthesis in the kidneys and hearts of normal rats.MethodsA 4-day water deprivation (WD) and 7-day salt restriction (SR; 0.01% NaCl) were performed in 12 and 14 rats, respectively. Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) mRNA expression in the kidney was assessed with reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction coupled with Southern blot hybridization, while the ANP mRNA in the hearts was measured by Northern blot hybridization. ANP and angiotensin II concentrations in the extracted plasma were measured by radioimmunoassay. The molecular form of renal ANP-like protein was characterized by reverse phase—high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC).ResultsRenal outer and inner medullary ANP mRNA showed a respective 11-fold and ninefold increase in WD rats, and an eightfold and fivefold increase in SR rats as compared to corresponding control groups. Inversely, cardiac atrial ANP mRNA and plasma ANP were decreased in WD rats, whereas they did not change in the SR group. Plasma angiotensin II concentration increased in conjunction with the decrease of urine sodium excretion in both groups. RP-HPLC analysis revealed a 45% extraction of ANP in the WD rat kidneys, whereas only 3% ANP in the control kidneys migrated in a molecular form similar to cardiac atrial proANP.ConclusionsOur results demonstrate that water deprivation and salt restriction markedly enhance renal ANP mRNA, whereas water deprivation suppresses cardiac atrial ANP mRNA and plasma ANP concentrations. The current study indicates that renal ANP and cardiac atrial ANP appear to be two distinct systems regulated by different mechanisms and possibly exhibiting different intra-renal paracrine and systemic endocrine functions
Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 Encephalitis in Woman, Taiwan
We report an unusual case of pandemic (H1N1) 2009–related encephalitis in an immunocompetent woman. Although rare cases of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 associated with encephalitis have been reported previously, in this patient, direct viral invasion of the central nervous system was shown by simultaneous detection of viral RNA and pleocytosis
Modification of thermally activated delayed fluorescence emitters comprising acridan– pyrimidine moieties for efficient sky-blue to greenish-blue OLEDs
Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) is a promising approach to harvest triplet excitons and achieve high-performance organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) for displays. In this study, we synthesized two new TADF emitters, 4Ac25CzPy and 4Ac35CzPy, featuring acridan–pyrimidine–carbazole moieties. Remarkably, a slight modification in the carbazole group position enables precise control of luminous color, resulting in emissions at 483 nm and 494 nm for 4Ac25CzPy and 4Ac35CzPy, respectively, in the electroluminescent device. Both compounds exhibit small energy difference between their singlet and triplet states (DEST) of 0.14 eV and 0.15 eV, confirming their TADF characteristics. Notably, OLEDs utilizing 4Ac35CzPy achieve outstanding performance with the maximum external quantum efficiency (ZEQE) of 21.2% and a photoluminescence quantum yield of 65.1%. This high efficiency is attributed to efficient energy transfer from the host to the emitter. Moreover, the 4Ac35CzPy device exhibits a high light outcoupling efficiency of 0.3, further enhancing its remarkable performance
Deploying Image Deblurring across Mobile Devices: A Perspective of Quality and Latency
Recently, image enhancement and restoration have become important
applications on mobile devices, such as super-resolution and image deblurring.
However, most state-of-the-art networks present extremely high computational
complexity. This makes them difficult to be deployed on mobile devices with
acceptable latency. Moreover, when deploying to different mobile devices, there
is a large latency variation due to the difference and limitation of deep
learning accelerators on mobile devices. In this paper, we conduct a search of
portable network architectures for better quality-latency trade-off across
mobile devices. We further present the effectiveness of widely used network
optimizations for image deblurring task. This paper provides comprehensive
experiments and comparisons to uncover the in-depth analysis for both latency
and image quality. Through all the above works, we demonstrate the successful
deployment of image deblurring application on mobile devices with the
acceleration of deep learning accelerators. To the best of our knowledge, this
is the first paper that addresses all the deployment issues of image deblurring
task across mobile devices. This paper provides practical
deployment-guidelines, and is adopted by the championship-winning team in NTIRE

A Privacy-Preserved Analytical Method for eHealth Database with Minimized Information Loss
Digitizing medical information is an emerging trend that employs information and communication technology (ICT) to manage health records, diagnostic reports, and other medical data more effectively, in order to improve the overall quality of medical services. However, medical information is highly confidential and involves private information, even legitimate access to data raises privacy concerns. Medical records provide health information on an as-needed basis for diagnosis and treatment, and the information is also important for medical research and other health management applications. Traditional privacy risk management systems have focused on reducing reidentification risk, and they do not consider information loss. In addition, such systems cannot identify and isolate data that carries high risk of privacy violations. This paper proposes the Hiatus Tailor (HT) system, which ensures low re-identification risk for medical records, while providing more authenticated information to database users and identifying high-risk data in the database for better system management. The experimental results demonstrate that the HT system achieves much lower information loss than traditional risk management methods, with the same risk of reidentification
Secondary Household Transmission of SARS, Singapore
Secondary household transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) was studied in 114 households involving 417 contacts. The attack rate was low (6.2%). Occupation of the index case was the factor that most influenced household transmission (adjusted hazard ratio for healthcare workers 0.157; 95% confidence interval 0.042 to 0.588)
Paternal genetic affinity between western Austronesians and Daic populations

Abstract

Background

Austronesian is a linguistic family spread in most areas of the Southeast Asia, the Pacific Ocean, and the Indian Ocean. Based on their linguistic similarity, this linguistic family included Malayo-Polynesians and Taiwan aborigines. The linguistic similarity also led to the controversial hypothesis that Taiwan is the homeland of all the Malayo-Polynesians, a hypothesis that has been debated by ethnologists, linguists, archaeologists, and geneticists. It is well accepted that the Eastern Austronesians (Micronesians and Polynesians) derived from the Western Austronesians (Island Southeast Asians and Taiwanese), and that the Daic populations on the mainland are supposed to be the headstream of all the Austronesian populations.

Results

In this report, we studied 20 SNPs and 7 STRs in the non-recombining region of the 1,509 Y chromosomes from 30 China Daic populations, 23 Indonesian and Vietnam Malayo-Polynesian populations, and 11 Taiwan aboriginal populations. These three groups show many resemblances in paternal lineages. Admixture analyses demonstrated that the Daic populations are hardly influenced by Han Chinese genetically, and that they make up the largest proportion of Indonesians. Most of the population samples contain a high frequency of haplogroup O1a-M119, which is nearly absent in other ethnic families. The STR network of haplogroup O1a* illustrated that Indonesian lineages did not derive from Taiwan aborigines as linguistic studies suggest, but from Daic populations.

Conclusion

We show that, in contrast to the Taiwan homeland hypothesis, the Island Southeast Asians do not have a Taiwan origin based on their paternal lineages. Furthermore, we show that both Taiwan aborigines and Indonesians likely derived from the Daic populations based on their paternal lineages. These two populations seem to have evolved independently of each other. Our results indicate that a super-phylum, which includes Taiwan aborigines, Daic, and Malayo-Polynesians, is genetically educible.</p
