Archaea are prominent members of the prokaryotic communities colonizing common forest mushrooms
In this study, the abundance and composition of prokaryotic communities associated with the inner tissue of fruiting bodies of Suillus bovinus, Boletus pinophilus, Cantharellus cibarius, Agaricus arvensis, Lycoperdon perlatum, and Piptoporus betulinus were analyzed using culture-independent methods. Our findings indicate that archaea and bacteria colonize the internal tissues of all investigated specimens and that archaea are prominent members of the prokaryotic community. The ratio of archaeal 16S rRNA gene copy numbers to those of bacteria was >1 in the fruiting bodies of four out of six fungal species included in the study. The largest proportion of archaeal 16S rRNA gene sequences belonged to thaumarchaeotal classes Terrestrial group, Miscellaneous Crenar-chaeotic Group (MCG), and Thermoplasmata. Bacterial communities showed characteristic compositions in each fungal species. Bacterial classes Gammaproteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacilli, and Clostridia were prominent among communities in fruiting body tissues. Bacterial populations in each fungal species had different characteristics. The results of this study imply that fruiting body tissues are an important habitat for abundant and diverse populations of archaea and bacteria.Peer reviewe
Harmonized Dataset of Ozone Profiles from Satellite Limb and Occultation Measurements
In this paper, we present a HARMonized dataset of OZone profiles (HARMOZ) based on limb and occultation measurements from Envisat (GOMOS, MIPAS and SCIAMACHY), Odin (OSIRIS, SMR) and SCISAT (ACE-FTS) satellite instruments. These measurements provide high-vertical-resolution ozone profiles covering the altitude range from the upper troposphere up to the mesosphere in years 2001-2012. HARMOZ has been created in the framework of the European Space Agency Climate Change Initiative project. The harmonized dataset consists of original retrieved ozone profiles from each instrument, which are screened for invalid data by the instrument teams. While the original ozone profiles are presented in different units and on different vertical grids, the harmonized dataset is given on a common pressure grid in netCDF (network common data form)-4 format. The pressure grid corresponds to vertical sampling of similar to 1 km below 20 km and 2-3 km above 20 km. The vertical range of the ozone profiles is specific for each instrument, thus all information contained in the original data is preserved. Provided altitude and temperature profiles allow the representation of ozone profiles in number density or mixing ratio on a pressure or altitude vertical grid. Geolocation, uncertainty estimates and vertical resolution are provided for each profile. For each instrument, optional parameters, which are related to the data quality, are also included. For convenience of users, tables of biases between each pair of instruments for each month, as well as bias uncertainties, are provided. These tables characterize the data consistency and can be used in various bias and drift analyses, which are needed, for instance, for combining several datasets to obtain a long-term climate dataset. This user-friendly dataset can be interesting and useful for various analyses and applications, such as data merging, data validation, assimilation and scientific research. Causes and risk factors for common mental illnesses : the beliefs of paediatric hospital staff in the United Arab Emirates
Background
Children and adolescents with chronic physical health conditions are vulnerable to poor mental health outcomes. The measurement of mental health literacy of health professionals working with such populations is important because of their role in promoting early and appropriate help-seeking. This study sought to determine the beliefs regarding the causes of and risks factors for three types of mental illnesses amongst health professionals in United Arab Emirates.
Method
A culturally validated mental health literacy survey presenting three vignettes of fictional characters meeting diagnostic criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder, depression with suicidal thoughts and psychosis was distributed. The survey measured health care professionalsâ beliefs regarding the causes of and risk factors for these disorders.
Results
A total of 317 health care professional (>â90% nurses) were surveyed from across the UAE. Although 43.8% correctly endorsed exposure to a âtraumatic eventâ as the most likely cause for developing posttraumatic stress disorder, there was a more limited understanding of the contribution of biopsychosocial factors to the development of the mental illness, particularly for psychosis. Participant socio-demographic variables were associated with attributions of religious or spiritual beliefs and personal weakness as causal and/or vulnerability factors in the development of depression with suicidal thoughts and psychosis.
Conclusions
Efforts to improve mental health systems and health care providers in UAE and other similar Middle Eastern countries requires targeted mental health literacy programs that seek to integrate biopsychosocial models of mental illness and their treatment with the positive aspects of religious and cultural beliefs that are dominant in this region
Relative drifts and biases between six ozone limb satellite measurements from the last decade
As part of European Space Agencyâs (ESA) climate change initiative, high vertical resolution ozone profiles from three instruments all aboard ESAâs Envisat (GOMOS, MIPAS, SCIAMACHY) and ESAâs third party missions (OSIRIS, SMR, ACE-FTS) are to be combined in order to create an essential climate variable data record for the last decade. A prerequisite before combining data is the examination of differences and drifts between the data sets. In this paper, we present a detailed analysis of ozone profile differences based on pairwise collocated measurements, including the evolution of the differences with time. Such a diagnosis is helpful to identify strengths and weaknesses of each data set that may vary in time and introduce uncertainties in long-term trend estimates. The analysis reveals that the relative drift between the sensors is not statistically significant for most pairs of instruments. The relative drift values can be used to estimate the added uncertainty in physical trends. The added drift uncertainty is estimated at about 3% decade (1Ï). Larger differences and variability in the differences are found in the lowermost stratosphere (below 20 km) and in the mesosphere

Positive youth development in swimming: clarification and consensus of key psychosocial assets
The purpose of this study was to gain a more cohesive understanding of the assets considered necessary to develop in young swimmers to ensure both individual and sport specific development. This two stage study involved (a) a content analysis of key papers to develop a list of both psychosocial skills for performance enhancement and assets associated with positive youth development, and (b) in-depth interviews involving ten expert swim coaches, practitioners and youth sport scholars. Five higher order categories containing seventeen individual assets emerged. These results are discussed in relation to both existing models of positive youth development and implications for coaches, practitioners and parents when considering the psychosocial development of young British swimmers
Merged SAGEÂ II, Ozone_cci and OMPS ozone profile dataset and evaluation of ozone trends in the stratosphere
In this paper, we present a merged dataset of ozone profiles from
several satellite instruments: SAGEÂ II on ERBS, GOMOS, SCIAMACHY and
MIPAS on Envisat, OSIRIS on Odin, ACE-FTS on SCISAT, and OMPS on
Suomi-NPP. The merged dataset is created in the framework of the
European Space Agency Climate Change Initiative (Ozone_cci) with
the aim of analyzing stratospheric ozone trends. For the merged
dataset, we used the latest versions of the original ozone
datasets. The datasets from the individual instruments have been
extensively validated and intercompared; only those datasets which
are in good agreement, and do not exhibit significant drifts with
respect to collocated ground-based observations and with respect to
each other, are used for merging. The long-term SAGEâCCIâOMPS
dataset is created by computation and merging of deseasonalized
anomalies from individual instruments.
The merged SAGEâCCIâOMPS dataset consists of deseasonalized
anomalies of ozone in 10° latitude bands from 90°âŻS
to 90°âŻN and from 10 to 50âŻkm in steps of
1âŻkm covering the period from October 1984 to
July 2016. This newly created dataset is used for evaluating ozone
trends in the stratosphere through multiple linear
regression. Negative ozone trends in the upper stratosphere are
observed before 1997 and positive trends are found after 1997. The
upper stratospheric trends are statistically significant at
midlatitudes and indicate ozone recovery, as expected from the
decrease of stratospheric halogens that started in the middle of the
1990s and stratospheric cooling
Studying feasibility and effects of a two-stage nursing staff training in residential geriatric care using a 30 month mixed-methods design [ISRCTN24344776]
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Transfer techniques and lifting weights often cause back pain and disorders for nurses in geriatric care. The Kinaesthetics care conception claims to be an alternative, yielding benefits for nurses as well as for clients.</p> <p>Starting a multi-step research program on the effects of Kinaesthetics, we assess the feasibility of a two-stage nursing staff training and a pre-post research design. Using quantitative and qualitative success criteria, we address mobilisation from the bed to a chair and backwards, walking with aid and positioning in bed on the staff level as well as on the resident level. In addition, effect estimates should help to decide on and to prepare a controlled trial.</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p>Standard basic and advanced Kinaesthetics courses (each comprising four subsequent days and an additional counselling day during the following four months) are offered to n = 36 out of 60 nurses in a residential geriatric care home, who are in charge of 76 residents. N = 22 residents needing movement support are participating to this study.</p> <p>On the staff level, measurements include focus group discussions, questionnaires, physical strain self-assessment (Borg scale), video recordings and external observation of patient assistance skills using a specialised instrument (SOPMAS). Questionnaires used on the resident level include safety, comfort, pain, and level of own participation during mobilisation. A functional mobility profile is assessed using a specialised test procedure (MOTPA).</p> <p>Measurements will take place at baseline (T0), after basic training (T1), and after the advanced course (T2). Follow-up focus groups will be offered at T1 and 10 months later (T3).</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>Ten criteria for feasibility success are established before the trial, assigned to resources (missing data), processes (drop-out of nurses and residents) and science (minimum effects) criteria. Comprehensive analysis of NuMA variation in breast cancer
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>A recent genome wide case-control association study identified <it>NuMA </it>region on 11q13 as a candidate locus for breast cancer susceptibility. Specifically, the variant Ala794Gly was suggested to be associated with increased risk of breast cancer.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In order to evaluate the <it>NuMa </it>gene for breast cancer susceptibility, we have here screened the entire coding region and exon-intron boundaries of <it>NuMa </it>in 92 familial breast cancer patients and constructed haplotypes of the identified variants. Five missense variants were further screened in 341 breast cancer cases with a positive family history and 368 controls. We examined the frequency of Ala794Gly in an extensive series of familial (n = 910) and unselected (n = 884) breast cancer cases and controls (n = 906), with a high power to detect the suggested breast cancer risk. We also tested if the variant is associated with histopathologic features of breast tumors.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Screening of <it>NuMA </it>resulted in identification of 11 exonic variants and 12 variants in introns or untranslated regions. Five missense variants that were further screened in breast cancer cases with a positive family history and controls, were each carried on a unique haplotype. None of the variants, or the haplotypes represented by them, was associated with breast cancer risk although due to low power in this analysis, very low risk alleles may go unrecognized. The <it>NuMA </it>Ala794Gly showed no difference in frequency in the unselected breast cancer case series or familial case series compared to control cases. Furthermore, Ala794Gly did not show any significant association with histopathologic characteristics of the tumors, though Ala794Gly was slightly more frequent among unselected cases with lymph node involvement.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our results do not support the role of <it>NuMA </it>variants as breast cancer susceptibility alleles.</p
