Optical parameters of leaves of seven weed species
The absorption coefficient (k), infinite reflectance (R), and scattering coefficient (s) were tabulated for five wavelengths and analyzed for statistical differences for seven weed species. The wavelengths were: 0.55-micrometer, 0.65-micrometers, 0.85-micrometer, 1.65-micrometers, and 2.20-micrometer. The R of common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L.), Johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.), and annual sowthistle (Sonchus oleraceus L.) leaves at the 0.85-micrometer wavelength were significantly (p=0.05) higher than for sunflower (Heliantus annus L.), ragweed parthenium (Parthenium hysterophorus L.), or London rocket (Sisymbrium irio L.). Annual sowthistle had the largest k value, and Plamer amaranth (Amaranthus palmer S. Wats.) had the smallest k value at the 0.65 approximately chlorophyll absorption wavelength. In general, john-songress, ragweed parthenium, or London rocket had the largest s values among the five wavelengths, wereas annual sowthistle and plamar amaranth were usually lowest
Knowledge About the Human Papillomavirus Vaccine Among Employees at a Tertiary Cancer Center: Room for Improvement
Introduction: The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for routine vaccination of boys and girls to protect against HPV-related cancers and genital warts. To meet the Healthy People 2020 target for HPV vaccination, health care providers must understand the importance of strongly recommending the HPV vaccine to all eligible adolescents. We sought to determine HPV vaccination patterns among employees at a tertiary cancer center and their children and attitudes regarding HPV vaccination among the employees.
Methods: All employees at a tertiary cancer center were invited to participate in a cross-sectional survey administered online during July and August 2015. The survey included questions about HPV vaccination of participants and their children, including reasons why vaccine-eligible employees and children had not been vaccinated.
Results: Of those eligible, 13% of male and 33% of female employees and 44% of daughters and 24% of sons of employees had completed the vaccine series. The main reasons for not completing the series or not having one’s son completing the series were not knowing that the vaccine was needed and vaccine not recommended by a health care provider. The main reasons for not having one’s daughter complete the series were the two aforementioned reasons and daughter not yet sexually active.
Conclusion: Opportunities exist to educate health care workers about the benefits of the HPV vaccine and to increase the number of providers who recommend HPV vaccination to their patients
Transapical miniaturized ventricular assist device: Design and initial testing
BackgroundLeft ventricular assist devices are increasingly used to treat patients with advanced and otherwise refractory heart failure as bridge to transplant or destination therapy. We evaluated a new miniaturized left ventricular assist device that requires minimal surgery for implantation, potentially allowing implantation in earlier stage heart failure.MethodsHeartWare (Miami Lakes, Fla) developed transapical miniaturized ventricular assist device. Acute (n = 4), 1-week (n = 2), and 30-day (n = 4) bovine model experiments evaluated hemodynamic efficacy and biocompatibility of the device, which was implanted through small left thoracotomy with single insertion at apex of left ventricle without cardiopulmonary bypass. The device outflow cannula was positioned across the aortic valve. The international normalized ratio was maintained between 2.0 and 2.5 with warfarin. Hemodynamic, echocardiographic, fluoroscopic, hematologic, and blood chemistry measurements were evaluated.ResultsThe device was successfully implanted through the left ventricular apex in all 10 animals. The device was operated at 15,000 ± 1000 rpm (power consumption, 3.5–6.0 W). The device maintained normal end-organ perfusion with no significant hemolysis (0–30 mg/dL). There were no pump failures or device-related complications. At autopsy, no abnormalities were seen in endocardium, aortic valve leaflets, or aortic root. There was no evidence of thromboembolism or abnormalities in any peripheral end organs.ConclusionsWe successfully demonstrated feasibility of a novel intraventricular assist device that can be completely implanted through left ventricular apex. This transapical surgical approach eliminates needs for sternotomy, device pocket, cardiopulmonary bypass, ventricular coring, and construction of an outflow graft anastomosis
Rosiglitazone as an option for patients with acromegaly: a case series
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>In the patient with acromegaly, pituitary surgery is the therapeutic standard. Despite undergoing surgery, a significant number of patients with acromegaly continue to have uncontrolled growth hormone secretion. These patients require other treatments such as external irradiation and/or drug therapy.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We present the clinical and laboratory responses to six months of treatment with rosiglitazone in four cases. In all four cases, the patients had persistent growth hormone overproduction despite previous surgical treatment and other conventional therapy. Case 1 is a 57-year-old Caucasian woman, case 2 is a 51-year-old Hispanic man, case 3 is a 32-year-old Hispanic woman, and case 4 is a 36-year-old Hispanic man. In three of these patients, basal and nadir growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor 1 levels were significantly decreased (<it>P </it>< 0.05 and <it>P </it>< 0.01, respectively).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Rosiglitazone could be a treatment option in select patients with acromegaly.</p
Genetic and serologic surveillance of rotavirus with P[8] and P[4] genotypes in feces from children in the city of Chihuahua, northern Mexico
Rotavirus vaccine was developed using the most prominent G and P genotypes circulating in children population. Therefore, severe gastroenteritis has been reduced around the world. This study investigated the G and P rotavirus genotypes circulating in children from two hospitals in the city of Chihuahua, Mexico. Additionally, polyclonal antibodies against Rotavirus Wa strain were used to determine their homotypic and heterotypic reactivity to both P[8] and P[4] genotypes. G1, G2, and G3 VP7 genotypes and P[8] and P[4] VP4 genotypes were detected in common and uncommon combinations as well as mixed infectious. The predominant combination was G1P[8]. Phylogenetic analysis of VP4 gene revealed the presence of P[8]-1 and P[8]-3 lineages of P[8] genotype and P[4]-5 lineage of P[4] genotype. All but five G1P[8] rotavirus were detected by polyclonal anti-Rotavirus Wa strain. Mutation analysis revealed differences in three of the four neutralizing epitopes previously reported to VP8* subunit of VP4 protein. Results of this study offer insights over genetic variants of field rotavirus that could be detected in a homotypic and heterotypic way by antibodies elicited to rotavirus with P[8] genotype. In Vitro Murine Lymphoma L5178y-R Cells Growth Inhibition By Endophytic Fungi Isolated From Lophocereus Marginatus
Background: Chemotherapy is one of the main treatments to fight cancer. However, about 90% of failures in this procedure are due to the invasion and metastasis of drug-resistant cancer cells. Therefore, the search for new drugs has become critical in oncology. Endophytic fungi, as important sources of bioactive compounds, represent an alternative for the isolation, characterization, and development of new pharmacological treatments for cancer control. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the cytotoxic activity of liquid culture extracts of endophytic fungi isolated from Lophocereus marginatus against murine lymphoma L5178Y-R cells.
Methods: Endophytic fungi obtained from L. marginatus stems were isolated and morphologically characterized. Aqueous, methanolic, and ethyl acetate extracts were obtained from fungal liquid cultures. To evaluate the anticancer activity, we used tumor L5178Y-R cells and control peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Extracts were evaluated at 250 and 25 µg/mL and 250 µg/mL, using the 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazoliumbromide) colorimetric reduction assay to determine cytotoxicity. Vincristine and 1% DMSO were used as positive and negative controls, respectively. The IC50 value and selectivity index (SI) were determined only for the extracts that presented the highest antitumor activity. These isolates were molecularly identified from sequencing of the spacer region of the ribosomal DNA internal transcript (ITS). A metabolite production curve was performed with selected isolates to determine the time of the highest antitumor activity.
Results: Ten endophytic fungi from L. marginatus were isolated and morphologically characterized. Results showed that aqueous extracts presented lower lymphoma cells growth inhibition (\u3c 50%) at the highest concentration evaluated (250 µg/mL), as compared with ethyl acetate and methanolic extracts, which showed up to 93.4% and 94.3% cells growth inhibition, respectively. Ten extracts with \u3e 80% tumor cells growth inhibition were selected and evaluated at 250 µg/mL on PBMCs viability. Extracts showing less than 50% cytotoxicity to PBMCs were selected and IC50 and IS were determined. Strain PME-H005 presented the highest toxicity against L5178Y-R cells and the highest SI with IC50 of 39.7 µg/mL and IS \u3e 6.2, as compared with PBMCs. Four isolates that showed the highest antitumor activity were molecularly identified, corresponding to the species Penicillium citrinum, Aspergillus versicolor, Metarhizium anisopliae, and Cladosporium sp. When performing the metabolite production curve, it was observed that only A. versicolor PME-H005 and M. anisopliae PME-H007 strains retained antitumor activity, where the ethyl acetate extracts showed the highest activity with IC50 values of 23.2 µg/ mL (28 d) for the PME-H005 strain and 2.7 µg/mL (21 d) for PME-H007.
Conclusions: A. versicolor PME-H005 and M. anisopliae PME-H007 strains extracts showed significant antitumor activity against L5178Y-R lymphoma cells. Further research is required to characterize bioactive compounds responsible for this activity
