In the last issue of the Bulletin I wrote something of a polemic on the need for history departments to do more to encourage better employment outcomes for our students, both undergraduate and graduate. Among other things, I suggested that professors could give assignments that more closely reflect some of the different types of work that our graduates can expect outside of academia. This is, after all, where the overwhelming majority of them will end up

A new study that was commissioned by the American Historical Association has just been released, and it should be of great interest to historians on both sides of the border. “The Many Careers of History PhDs: A Study of Job Outcomes,” by L. Maren Wood and Robert B. Townsend, looks at career outcomes for a sample of 2,500 History PhDs who graduated in the US between 1998 and 2009

It was with more than a little trepidation that I deposited my doctoral thesis at the University of Ottawa this past September. These feelings were, of course, accompanied by a great deal of satisfaction and relief at having (nearly) completed a project that I have been working on for years now, and for which I remain passionate. My trepidation stems from the usual feelings of anxiety that come with submitting a thesis: I pray to Clio for a speedy administrative process and for a timely and successful defence. I hope the readers are satisfied with the work, but I also look forward to discussing it in detail with five different people who have actually read it!

Aging and response properties in the parking-lot model

An adsorption-desorption (or parking-lot) model can reproduce qualitatively the densification kinetics and other features of a weakly vibrated granular material. Here we study the the two-time correlation and response functions of the model and demonstrate that their behavior is consistent with recently observed memory effects in granular materials. Although the densification kinetics and hysteresis are robust properties, we show that the aging behavior of the adsorption-desorption model is different from other models of granular compaction. We propose an experimental test to distinguish the possible aging behaviors.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, to appear in Eur. Phys. Jour.

During the past decade, the field of music education has seen an increase in the amount of scholarship surrounding LGBTQ studies in music teaching and learning. For example, the University of Illinois hosted three symposia for the field of music education dedicated to LGBTQ studies (2010, 2012, 2016), and proceedings from these symposia were published in three separate issues of the of the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education (2011, 2014, 2016). Other notable scholarship has been published in Action, Criticism, and Theory for Music Education (Gould 2005); the Music Educators Journal (Bergonzi, 2009; Carter, 2011; McBride, 2016); the Journal of Research in Music Education (Carter, 2013; Nicholas, 2013); and UPDATE: Applications of Research in Music Education (Garrett, 2012).
