A New 100-GHz Band Front-End System with a Waveguide-Type Dual-Polarization Sideband-Separating SIS Receiver for the NRO 45-m Radio Telescope
We developed a waveguide-type dual-polarization sideband-separating SIS
receiver system of the 100-GHz band for the 45-m radio telescope at the
Nobeyama Radio Observatory, Japan. This receiver is composed of an ortho-mode
transducer and two sideband-separating SIS mixers, which are both based on the
waveguide technique. The receiver has four intermediate frequency bands of
4.0--8.0 GHz. Over the radio frequency range of 80--120 GHz, the
single-sideband receiver noise temperatures are 50--100 K and the image
rejection ratios are greater than 10 dB. We developed new matching optics for
the telescope beam as well as new IF chains for the four IF signals. The new
receiver system was installed in the telescope, and we successfully observed
the 12CO, 13CO and C18O emission lines simultaneously toward the Sagittarius B2
region to confirm the performance of the receiver system. The SSB noise
temperature of the system, including the atmosphere, became approximately half
of that of the previous receiver system. The Image Rejection Ratios (IRRs) of
the two 2SB mixers were calculated from the 12CO and HCO+ spectra from the W51
giant molecular cloud, resulting in > 20 dB for one polarization and > 12 dB

Roles of MED1 in Quiescence of Hair Follicle Stem Cells and Maintenance of Normal Hair Cycling
MED1 (mediator complex subunit 1) is expressed by human epidermal keratinocytes and functions as a coactivator of several transcription factors. To elucidate the role of MED1 in keratinocytes, we established keratinocyte-specific Med1-null (Med1epi−/−) mice using the K5Cre/LoxP system. Development of the epidermis and appendages of Med1epi−/− mice were macroscopically and microscopically normal until the second catagen of the hair cycle. However, the hair cycle of Med1epi−/− mice was spontaneously repeated after the second telogen, which does not occur in wild-type (WT) mice. Hair follicles of Med1epi−/− mice could not enter anagen after 6 months of age, resulting in sparse pelage hair in older Med1epi−/− mice. Interfollicular epidermis (IFE) of Med1epi−/− mice was acanthotic and more proliferative than that of WT mice, whereas these findings were less evident in older Med1epi−/− mice. Flow cytometric analysis revealed that the numbers of hair follicle bulge stem cells were reduced in Med1epi−/− mice from a few months after birth. These results suggest that MED1 has roles in maintaining quiescence of keratinocytes and preventing depletion of the follicular stem cells
D139N mutation of PsbP enhances the oxygen-evolving activity of photosystem II through stabilized binding of a chloride ion

The chloride ion (Cl−) has long been known as an essential cofactor for oxygen evolution by PSII, and two Cl− ions (Cl-1 and Cl-2) have been found to specifically bind near the Mn4CaO5 cluster within the oxygen-evolving center (OEC). However, despite intensive studies on these Cl− ions, little is known about the function of Cl-2, the Cl− ion that is associated with the backbone nitrogens of D1-Asn338, D1-Phe339, and CP43-Glu354. In green plant PSII, the membrane extrinsic subunits—PsbP and PsbQ—are responsible for Cl− retention within the OEC. The Loop 4 region of PsbP, consisting of highly conserved residues Thr135–Gly142, is inserted close to Cl-2, but its importance has not been examined to date. Here, we investigated the importance of PsbP-Loop 4 using spinach PSII membranes reconstituted with spinach PsbP proteins harboring mutations in this region. Mutations in PsbP-Loop 4 had remarkable effects on the rate of oxygen evolution by PSII. Moreover, we found that a specific mutation, PsbP-D139N, significantly enhanced the oxygen-evolving activity in the absence of PsbQ, but not significantly in its presence. The D139N mutation increased the Cl− retention ability of PsbP and induced a unique structural change in the OEC, as indicated by light-induced Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) difference spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. Our findings provide insight into the functional significance of Cl-2 in the water-oxidizing reaction of PSII
Analysis of a city‐wide COVID‐19 prevention strategy for aged‐care facilities during third and fifth waves of COVID‐19 in Kyoto City, Kyoto, Japan
[Background] During the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic at the end of 2020, clusters occurred frequently in aged-care facilities (ACFs), which put pressure on the medical field in Japan. Based on this experience, Kyoto University and Kyoto City collaborated to promote a citywide COVID-19 prevention strategy to prevent the spread of COVID-19 within ACFs. The aim of this study was to clarify the effect of the prevention strategy among ACFs in Kyoto City during the third and fifth waves of the pandemic. [Methods] During the study period, the following measures were adopted as the prevention strategy in all ACFs: (1) active polymerase chain reaction (PCR) mass testing and facility-wide testing when a single case was identified, (2) implementation of strategies to prevent transmission within a facility, and (3) vaccination program for ACFs. [Results] Of the 1, 144 facilities subjected to the mass testing, 71.0% participated in the whole program including active PCR testing. The remainder participated in the rest of the programs. The prevalence of ACF-related COVID-19 cases among total COVID-19 cases in Kyoto City decreased from 7.9% in the third wave to 4.1% in the fourth wave and 2.1% in the fifth wave. The incidence of clusters and proportion of severe elderly cases also decreased during the study period. [Conclusions] A city-wide multidisciplinary effort including PCR mass testing and a vaccination program in cooperation with a university and local administrative office successfully reduced the clusters and transmission in ACFs in Kyoto City, Japan
