    Intersubband absorption linewidth in GaAs quantum wells due to scattering by interface roughness, phonons, alloy disorder, and impurities

    We calculate the intersubband absorption linewidth in quantum wells (QWs) due to scattering by interface roughness, LO phonons, LA phonons, alloy disorder, and ionized impurities, and compare it with the transport energy broadening that corresponds to the transport relaxation time related to electron mobility. Numerical calculations for GaAs QWs clarify the different contributions of each individual scattering mechanism to absorption linewidth and transport broadening. Interface roughness scattering contributes about an order of magnitude more to linewidth than to transport broadening, because the contribution from the intrasubband scattering in the first excited subband is much larger than that in the ground subband. On the other hand, LO phonon scattering (at room temperature) and ionized impurity scattering contribute much less to linewidth than to transport broadening. LA phonon scattering makes comparable contributions to linewidth and transport broadening, and so does alloy disorder scattering. The combination of these contributions with significantly different characteristics makes the absolute values of linewidth and transport broadening very different, and leads to the apparent lack of correlation between them when a parameter, such as temperature or alloy composition, is changed.     A NEW LOOK AT TRANSCRIPTIONAL REGULATION BY AIRE IN mTECs

    The deficiency of Aire, a transcriptional regulator whose defect results in the development of autoimmunity, is associated with reduced expression of tissue-restricted self-Ags (TRAs) in medullary thymic epithelial cells (mTECs). Although the mechanisms underlying Aire-dependent expression of TRAs need to be explored, the physical identification of the target(s) of Aire has been hampered by the low and promiscuous expression of TRAs. We have tackled this issue by engineering mice with augmented Aire expression. Integration of the transcriptomic data from Aire-augmented and Aire-deficient mTECs revealed that a large proportion of so-called Aire-dependent genes, including those of TRAs, may not be direct transcriptional targets downstream of Aire. Rather, Aire induces TRA expression indirectly through controlling the heterogeneity of mTECs, as revealed by single-cell analyses. In contrast, Ccl25 emerged as a canonical target of Aire, and we verified this both in vitro and in vivo. Our approach has illuminated the Aire’s primary targets while distinguishing them from the secondary targets

    Production of unnatural glucosides of curcumin with drastically enhanced water solubility by cell suspension cultures of Catharanthus roseus

    AbstractCatharanthus roseus cell suspension cultures converted exogenously supplied curcumin to a series of glucosides, none of which has been found in nature so far. The efficiency of glucosylation was dependent on culture stage of the cells and medium sucrose concentration. Methyl jasmonate and salicylic acid enhanced the glucoside formation only when they were added to the cultures prior to the addition of curcumin. The glucoside yield was 2.5 μmol/g fresh weight of the cells at an optimal culture condition. The water solubility of curcumin-4′,4″-O-β-D-digentiobioside was 0.65 mmol/ml, which was 20 million-fold higher than that of curcumin

    The damage to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant incurred following the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011 resulted in serious radioactive pollution of Eastern Japan. In some grasslands of this area, radioactive cesium (Cs) content of grasses exceeded the provisional safety standard for use as feed for dairy and beef cattle of 100 Bq kg–1 fresh weight, and the livestock industry has been seriously affected in numerous ways: needing to dispose of polluted forage, grazing prohibitions, declines in beef prices, suspensions of shipping beef to market, and blanket testing of beef cattle (Manabe et al., 2013). The spatial distribution of radioactive Cs in grasslands was complex in various scales (Tsuiki and Maeda, 2012a; 2012b). So it is difficult to estimate actual pollution level in grassland ecosystems. The transfer of radioactive Cs from soil to plant is affected by soil soluble potassium (K) concentration, pH, clay and organic matter contents (Absalom et al., 2001; Tsuiki et al., 2013). The radioactive Cs dynamics in soil-plantanimal system is complex and modeling is necessary to clarify the relationships.     Improvements of CO2 Laser Heterodyne Imaging Interferometer for Electron Density Profile Measurements on LHD

    After installation of CO2 laser (wavelength 10.6 μm) heterodyne imaging interferometer (CO2 HI) in 2001, continuous developments have been carried out to improve the measurements capability and stability of operation. The CO2 HI works almost without phase jumping at high electron density (> 1 × 1020 m-3), where the existing far infrared laser (wavelength 118.9 μm) interferometer suffers from fringe jump due to the reduction of signal intensity caused by refraction. However a second interferometer is required to compensate mechanical vibration. A YAG laser (wavelength 1.06 μm) heterodyne imaging interferometer (YAG HI) is presently used for the vibration compensation. In the 10th LHD experimental campaign (2006?2007), sixty four channels of CO2 HI to measure electron density profile and ten channels of YAG HI to measure mechanical vibration are working. A measurement example of a pellet fuelled high-density discharge is reported
