Encrusted Ureteral Stent Retrieval Using Flexible Ureteroscopy with a Ho: YAG Laser
A 23-year-old female had bilateral ureteral stents placed due to bilateral renal stones
and hydronephrosis. The bilateral ureteral stents were changed every 3 months. A
kidney ureter bladder (KUB) film showed left encrustation along the ureteral stent thus
necessitating removal; however, the ureteral stent could not be removed cystoscopically.
The ureteral stent was, therefore, extracted using flexible ureteroscopy (URS) with a
holmium (Ho): yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) laser
Impalement Injury of the Urinary Bladder: A Case Report
Impalement injury of the urinary bladder, especially secondary to rectal impalement, is extremely rare. In this case, a 31-year-old man sustained a steel pipe impalement injury through his perirectal region. He presented with gross hematuria, abdominal defense, and a penetrating wound. On the basis of the computed tomography findings and abdominal defense, we suspected a through-and-through bladder perforation from the rectal space to the intraperitoneum. Laparotomy revealed a through-and-through bladder perforation as well as damage to the right ureter, 3 distinct ileal injuries, and rectal anterior, anal, and right seminal vesicle injuries. Surgical repair of each damaged site was undertaken. The prompt diagnosis and surgical repair ensured good postoperative recovery
Treatment for recurrence after esophagectomy
Background : With regard to the recurrence of esophageal cancer after surgery, the prognosis has improved with the progress of multimodal perioperative treatment. In this study, the recurrence pattern, treatment method, and prognosis of recurrent cases following esophageal cancer surgery were retrospectively examined. Materials and Methods : Three hundred seven patients with histologically proven squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, and others were enrolled in the study. With respect to clinicopathologic factors and recurrence patterns, recurrence risk factors, recurrence period, treatment for recurrence, and prognosis were investigated. Results : Ninety two percent of all recurrent cases were observed within two years after radical esophagectomy. Locoregional recurrence, distant recurrence, and mixed recurrence were observed in 38 (35%), 56 (51%), and 16 (14%) cases, respectively. Patients with lymph node metastasis showed a significantly longer survival in comparison to those with metastasis to other organs (p = 0.0032). When analyzed using the treatment method, patients who underwent surgery (only surgery or additional postoperative chemotherapy) exhibited better survival in comparison to those who underwent other treatments. Discussion : Detailed and strict follow-up within two years are necessary in cases with deeper than muscular invasion, cases with extensive lymph node metastasis, or cases with lymphatic or vascular invasion
Transurethral Resection is an Efficacious Surgical Option for Patients with Prostatic Abscesses that Fail Transrectal Ultrasound-guided Drainage : A Case Report
A 60-year-old man with diabetes mellitus (DM) had a continuous fever and complained of pollakisuria and general fatigue during his hospitalization to establish glycemic control. He was diagnosed with a prostatic abscess by computed tomography and immediately transferred to our hospital. Transrectal, ultrasoundguided, needle aspiration of the prostatic abscess was performed as the initial surgical treatment, but the fluid could not be completely evacuated due to its high viscosity. Aspiration was not sufficient to improve his symptoms, therefore, antibiotics were administered intravenously along with strict control of his DM. Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) was carried out to resolve the abscess cavities while the patient awaited improvement of his general condition and inflammatory findings. After TURP, the patient’s lower urinary tract symptoms improved, and the abscess in the prostate did not recur
Neuroendocrine Carcinoma of the Bladder
The case was a 67-year-old male who visited our hospital with a major complaint of macroscopic hematuria. A bladder tumor was found. When a transurethral resection of the bladder tumor was performed, the histopathological diagnosis was neuroendocrine bladder cancer. After chemotherapy with cisplatin and etoposide a partial shrinkage of the tumor was observed; however, the patient expired 7 months after the first visit
Gallbladder Metastasis from Renal Cell Carcinoma
A 73-year-old female was operated with radical nephrectomy and cholecystectomy for renal cell carcinoma and suspected gallstones after 9 courses of sunitinib treatment. Gallbladder specimen showed gallbladder metastasis originating from the renal cell carcinoma. Gallbladder metastasis from renal cell carcinoma is rare. Here, we discuss a case of gallbladder metastasis from renal cell carcinoma
