    In the oxidation of 3-substituted 1-methylpyridinium salts (type III) with potassium ferricyanide and KOH at 32℃, the isopropyl and the tert-butyl group at the 3-position were found to orient oxidation to both the 2-(type IV) and the 6-position (type V) in ratios of 71 : 29 and 14 : 86,respectively. In the oxidation of the 1-methyl-3-tert-butyl-pyridinium salt (IIIl), replacement of the 1-methyl group by an aralkyl group along the series benzyl, phenethyl, and 3,4-dimethoxyphenethyl decreased the extent of the 2-pyridone formation along the series

    1-(3,4-Dimethoxyphenyl)-2-(3-tert-butylpiperidino) ethanol (7) was prepared from 3-tert-butylpyridine (5) through the quaternary salt 6. The mercuric acetate-EDTA oxidation of 7 produced the 6-piperidone 10 and the 2-piperidone 13 in a ratio of 98 : 2. The former piperidone was chemically correlated with the known 6-pyridone 8 through the lactam 9,and 9 was converted into the benzoquinolizidine 11 by cyclization and reduction of the resulting iminium salt 12

    Acoustic stiffness and change in plug cartilage over time after autologous osteochondral grafting: correlation between ultrasound signal intensity and histological score in a rabbit model

    We investigated quantitative changes over time in ultrasound signal intensity (an index of stiffness), signal duration (an index of surface irregularity), and interval between signals (an index of thickness) of plug cartilage in an animal model of autologous osteochondral grafting. A full-thickness osteochondral plug was surgically removed and replaced in male Japanese white rabbits (n = 22). Specimens obtained at day 0 and weeks 2, 4, 8, 12 and 24 postoperatively were assessed using an ultrasound system and by macroscopic and histological evaluation (modified Mankin's score). Histology revealed that the plug sank until 2 weeks postoperatively, and that newly formed cartilage-like tissue covered the plug, but at 24 weeks the tissue detached. The plug itself survived well throughout the period of observation. Although the signal intensity at the plug site was same as that in the sham operated contralateral knee at day 0, from 2 to 24 weeks postoperatively it was less than that in the sham knee. At 8 weeks, this difference was significant (P < 0.05). Modified Mankin's score revealed early degenerative changes at the site, but macroscopic examination did not. Signal intensity correlated significantly with score (both at day 0 and at the five postoperative time points [P < 0.05, r = -0.91] and as a whole [P < 0.05, r = -0.36]). Signal intensity also significantly correlated with the individual subscores for 'cartilage structure' (P < 0.05, r = -0.32) and 'cartilage cells' (P < 0.05, r = -0.30) from the modified Mankin's score, but not significantly with subscores for 'staining' and 'tidemark'. Signal duration correlated significantly with total score (as a whole [P < 0.05, r = 0.34]), but not significantly with the score for cartilage structure (P = 0.0557, r = 0.29). The interval between signals reflected well the actual thickness of the plug site. The significant relationships between ultrasound signal intensity and scores suggest that early degenerative changes in plug cartilage and cartilage-like tissue, especially in the superficial layer, are detectable by high-frequency ultrasound assessment

    Spontaneous Rupture of an Unscarred Gravid Uterus in a Primigravid Woman at 32 Weeks of Gestation

    Uterine rupture usually occurs in a scarred uterus, especially secondary to prior cesarean section. Antepartum uterine rupture in an unscarred uterus is extremely rare. We report a case of spontaneous rupture of an unscarred gravid uterus at 32 weeks of gestation in a primigravid woman. Ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a bulging cystic lesion communicating with the intrauterine cavity. Operative findings during emergent cesarean section revealed uterine perforation in the right cornual area and a prolapsed, nonbleeding amniotic sac. The left cornual area was also focally thin. An arcuate uterus was suspected based on follow-up hysterosalpingography. Antepartum uterine rupture tends to occur in the uterine cornual area. In this case, Müllerian duct anomalies may have been associated with focal myometrial defects

    Temporal variations of petrological characteristics of Tangkil and Rajabasa volcanic rocks, Indonesia

    Tangkil and Rajabasa Volcanoes are neighbouring subduction-zone volcanoes located on the southeast tip of Sumatra Island (Sunda Strait, Indonesia). Stratigraphic correlation of lavas in Tangkil-Rajabasa volcanic area was established from field observations, morphological analysis, and K-Ar dating analysis. Detailed petrography and geochemical data of two and eleven lava units from Tangkil and Rajabasa, respectively, were then integrated with the stratigraphy to show the temporal variations. Early stage (> 4.3 Ma) effusives of Tangkil Volcano are dacitic to rhyolitic (67-71 wt. % SiO2; Tklf), whereas the later (c. 4.3 Ma) rocks are basalt to basaltic andesite (c. 52 wt. % SiO2; Tklm). Tangkil shows bimodal magmatism, of which the felsic endmember is > 71 wt. % SiO2 and < 0.1 wt. % MgO. Lavas of Rajabasa Volcano are comparatively younger (c. 0.3 to 0.1 Ma) with compositions ranging from basalt to andesite (51-62 wt. % SiO2; Rbs). Chemical variations of Rajabasa accounts for the interactions of at least three endmembers: Mg-rich medium-K basalt magma, low-Mg medium-K basalt magma, and high-K andesitic magma. During the long evolution of Rbs magma system, the temporal chemistry shows rising-falling variation in SiO2 and MgO indicating the three magmas were active. The felsic endmember magma of Rajabasa is fixed in composition (at ~62 wt. % SiO2; ~2.2 wt. % MgO). The rocks from the last Tklf and Rbs indicate open system processes by containing plagioclase and pyroxene phenocrysts that show resorption of evolved core and overgrowth of less evolved mantle. The multiple zones of dissolution-overgrowth in plagioclase crystals and the fluctuating trend in temporal whole-rock variation suggest that the changes of magmatic condition in temperature, H2O, or chemical composition were repetitive
