    Proteomic analyses of retina of excitatory amino acid carrier 1 deficient mice

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Excitatory amino acid carrier 1 (EAAC1) is a glutamate transporter found in neuronal tissues and is extensively expressed in the retina. EAAC1 plays a role in a variety of neural functions, but its biological functions in the retina has not been fully determined. The purpose of this study was to identify proteins regulated by EAAC1 in the retina of mice. To accomplish this, we used a proteomics-based approach to identify proteins that are up- or down-regulated in EAAC1-deficient (EAAC1<sup>-/-</sup>) mice.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Proteomic analyses and two-dimensional gel electorphoresis were performed on the retina of EAAC1<sup>-/- </sup>mice, and the results were compared to that of wild type mice. The protein spots showing significant differences were selected for identification by mass spectrometric analyses. Thirteen proteins were differentially expressed; nine proteins were up-regulated and five proteins were down-regulated in EAAC1-/- retina. Functional clustering showed that identified proteins are involved in various cellular process, e.g. cell cycle, cell death, transport and metabolism.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We identified thirteen proteins whose expression is changed in EAAC-/- mice retinas. These proteins are known to regulate cell proliferation, death, transport, metabolism, cell organization and extracellular matrix.</p

    Fabrication of 1 T Bi-2223 Superconducting Magnet with 92 mm Bore Diameter at 77 K

    A Bi-2223 superconducting magnet for practical use in liquid nitrogen is designed and fabricated. Bi-2223 tapesprepared by ConTrolled Over Pressure (CT-OP) process are used for the winding, and the critical current at 77.3 K and self-field is in the range of 174–185 A. 28 double-pancake coils are resistively connected in series by copper terminals. Highcritical current tape is used for top and bottom double-pancake coils, since the magnetic field normal to the tape surface ishighest at the top and bottom of the magnet. Two iron plates at top and bottom of the magnet are used for reduction of thenormal component of magnetic field to the Bi-2223 tape, since the total performance of the magnet is determined by theminimum critical current at maximum normal magnetic field component to the tape. The inner bore diameter of the magnetis 92 mm. And the homogeneity of magnetic field of long-axis direction in 50 mmφ × 100 mm length is within 3%.     OBJECTIVE: It is difficult to distinguish between bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder (MDD) in patients lacking a clear history of mania. There is an urgent need for an objective biomarker for differential diagnosis. Using diffusion tensor imaging, this study investigated the differences in the brain white matter microstructure between patients with bipolar disorder and MDD. METHODS: Participants included 16 patients with bipolar disorder and 23 patients with MDD having depressed or euthymic states based on DSM-IV-TR criteria and 23 healthy volunteers. Whole-brain voxel-based morphometric analysis was used to detect any significant differences in fractional anisotropy between patients with bipolar disorder and MDD. The study was conducted between August 2011 and July 2015. RESULTS: We found a significant decrease in fractional anisotropy values in the anterior part of the corpus callosum in patients with bipolar disorder compared with MDD (P < .001), which did not depend on the patients' affective state. This decrease was associated with increased radial diffusivity values (P < .05), which was also found in patients with bipolar disorder when compared with healthy volunteers (P < .05). We predicted bipolar disorder and MDD in all patients using the fractional anisotropy values, with a correct classification rate of 76.9%. CONCLUSIONS: The present study revealed that patients with bipolar disorder have microstructural abnormalities in the corpus callosum during depressed or euthymic states, which may deteriorate the exchange of emotional information between the cerebral hemispheres, resulting in emotional dysregulation.     眼病として眼球の水晶体が白く濁る白内障がある.この病気により一度白く濁った水晶体は元に戻ることは無い.水晶体中の白く濁った部分を除去し,その中に眼内レンズを挿入する小切開白内障手術を行うことにより,視力の回復が見込まれる.しかし,術後の後遺症の一つとしてグレアの知覚が挙げられる.グレアとはレンズを挿入したことにより生じるぎらつきのことを指す.グレアの発生原因に関する詳しい解析はまだ十分に行われていない.本稿では,グレア発生原因解析の基礎研究として,眼内レンズ断面形状のモデル化.眼内レンズに入射する光を反射・屈折を考慮して光線追跡を行い,眼底での輝度分布をシミュレーションする方法について述べる.Cataract is the eye disease which clouds the lens of the eye. Vision can be returned through the cataract operation which inserts an intraocular lens into the eye. However a postoperative after effect exists in which a glare is generated. In this paper we approximate IOL's cross section shape using least squares approach, and trace light rays via taking into accout reflection and refraction. Then by observing the distribution of Rays onto a Fundus model we determined a glare exists
