A modified porous titanium sheet prepared by plasma activated sintering for biomedical applications
This study aimed to develop a contamination free porous titanium scaffold by
a plasma activated sintering within an originally developed TiN coated graphite
mold. The surface of porous titanium sheet with or without a coated graphite
mold was characterized. The cell adhesion property of porous titanium sheet was
also evaluated in this study. The peak of TiC was detected on the titanium
sheet processed with the graphite mold without a TiN coating. Since the
titanium fiber elements were directly in contact with the carbon graphite mold
during processing, surface contamination was unavoidable event in this
condition. The TiC peak was not detectable on the titanium sheet processed
within the TiN coated carbon graphite mold. This modified plasma activated
sintering with the TiN coated graphite mold would be useful to fabricate a
contamination free titanium sheet. The number of adherent cells on the modified
titanium sheet was greater than that of the bare titanium plate. Stress fiber
formation and the extension of the cells were observed on the titanium sheets.
This modified titanium sheet is expected to be a new tissue engineering
material in orthopedic bone repair.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Eosinophilic Granuloma in a Patient with Marked Improvements of Social Activity as well as Clinical Manifestations
A twenty-year-old male started to have low-back pain. On X-ray survey, unusual shadows of the right humerus and sacrum were found. An open biopsy confirmed a histological diagnosis of eosinophilic granuloma in the 5th lumbal spine and sacrum, followed by the second biopsy of the same diagnosis on the right humerus. A local radiation therapy was performed with 2 Gy for 3 times on the right humerus, along with low-dose continuous cyclophospamide administration for about 17 months. As to pain and performance status (PS) of the patient, there are complete disapperarance of pain and a marked improvement of PS, producing a great success in the therapy and an excellent social life i.e. a good quality of life (QOL) in the present patient
Swelling and Replicative DNA Synthesis of Detergent-treated Mouse Ascites Sarcoma Cells
Previous investigation showed that mouse ascites sarcoma cells permeabilized with appropriate concentrations of detergents (Triton X-100, Nonidet P-40 and Brij 58) had high replicative DNA synthesis in the presence of the four deoxyribonucleoside triphosphates, ATP, Mg2+ and proper ionic environment. The present study showed the optimum detergent concentration for DNA synthesis coincided closely with the minimum detergent concentration for inducing cell swelling. Phase contrast microscopy and electron microscopy of Triton-permeabilized cells showed the characteristic swollen cytoplasms and nucleus. Autoradiographic study showed that the DNA synthesis in permeable cells was confined to the nucleus. Cell viability and [3H] deoxythymidine uptake were impaired at much lower concentrations of Triton X-100 than the optimum concentration for in vitro DNA synthesis. In Triton-permeabilized cells, the minimum Triton concentration that produced cell swelling also seemed to produce high repliative DNA synthesis, which reflects the in vivo state of DNA synthesis.</p
A Unit Commitment Model with Demand Response for the Integration of Renewable Energies
The output of renewable energy fluctuates significantly depending on weather
conditions. We develop a unit commitment model to analyze requirements of the
forecast output and its error for renewable energies. Our model obtains the
time series for the operational state of thermal power plants that would
maximize the profits of an electric power utility by taking into account both
the forecast of output its error for renewable energies and the demand response
of consumers. We consider a power system consisting of thermal power plants,
photovoltaic systems (PV), and wind farms and analyze the effect of the
forecast error on the operation cost and reserves. We confirm that the
operation cost was increases with the forecast error. The effect of a sudden
decrease in wind power is also analyzed. More thermal power plants need to be
operated to generate power to absorb this sudden decrease in wind power. The
increase in the number of operating thermal power plants within a short period
does not affect the total operation cost significantly; however the
substitution of thermal power plants by wind farms or PV systems is not
expected to be very high. Finally, the effects of the demand response in the
case of a sudden decrease in wind power are analyzed. We confirm that the
number of operating thermal power plants is reduced by the demand response. A
power utility has to continue thermal power plants for ensuring supply-demand
balance; some of these plants can be decommissioned after installing a large
number of wind farms or PV systems, if the demand response is applied using an
appropriate price structure.Comment: submitted to 2012 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meetin
