Future trends of excess mercury in Asia in response to Minamata Convention on Mercury
Owing to rapid industrialization, Asia has become the main source of mercury emissions and a significant net importer of mercury.
Therefore, the situation regarding excess mercury in Asia needs to be better understood. In this study, mercury flows and excess mercury in 2010–2050 in Asian regions, with a particular focus on China, are assessed under updated assumptions. The excess mercury in China in 2030 and 2050 is estimated to be 125 and 284 tons, respectively. The cumulative excess mercury in China will reach around 10,000 tons in 2050 under the assumption of no export of it in the years 2010–2050. In addition, the year in which mercury reaches a surplus in Asia (excl. China) is estimated to be 2039. The mercury supply in Asia strongly depends on the usage of excess mercury in China. It is estimated that mercury supplies will be insufficient in Asia until at least 2017. These predictions should support decision-making and planning for long-term storage capacity, discussions of regional coordination, securing of technical support, and development of the basic design of related facilities

Electronic Structure and Electron Correlation in LaFeAsO_{1-x}F_x and LaFePO_{1-x}F_x
Photoemission spectroscopy is used to investigate the electronic structure of
the newly discovered iron-based superconductors LaFeAsO_{1-x}F_x and
LaFePO_{1-x}F_x. Line shapes of the Fe 2p core-level spectra suggest an
itinerant character of Fe 3d electrons. The valence-band spectra are generally
consistent with band-structure calculations except for the shifts of Fe
3d-derived peaks toward the Fermi level. From spectra taken in the Fe 3p -> 3d
core-absorption region, we have obtained the experimental Fe 3d partial density
of states, and explained it in terms of a band-structure calculation with a
phenomenological self-energy correction, yielding a mass renormalization factor
of ~< 2.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
First trimester heterotopic pregnancy with shock treated laparoscopically, followed by uneventful term pregnancy and normal birth
Heterotopic pregnancy (HP), a coexistence of intrauterine and ectopic pregnancies, is extremely rare. Although there have been many reports of maternal outcomes in pregnant women with HP, they have not described fetal neurodevelopmental outcomes and survival. A 30-year-old Japanese woman in early gestation who had undergone two previous cesarean deliveries was transferred to our hospital with vital signs of shock. HP was confirmed by ultrasonography and laparoscopic surgery, and right salpingectomy was performed. At term, a 2,875 g neonate was delivered via cesarean section without any complications
Appropriate pelvic obliquity measurement method in Lenke type 5C adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: a preliminary study
Kanie Y., Takenaka S., Kitahara T., et al. Appropriate pelvic obliquity measurement method in Lenke type 5C adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: a preliminary study. Journal of Spine Surgery 10, 255 (2024); https://doi.org/10.21037/jss-23-138.Background: Although pelvic obliquity (PO) is a risk factor for postoperative coronal decompensation in corrective surgery in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), especially Lenke 5C, methods of measuring PO are controversial. This study aimed to establish an appropriate measurement method using multiplanar reconstructed computed tomography (MPR-CT) images instead of standing posteroanterior (PA) whole-spine radiographs to evaluate PO in patients with Lenke 5C AIS. Methods: This study was a retrospective cross-sectional study. Twenty-five patients who underwent corrective surgery for AIS in Osaka University Hospital from August 2014 to February 2023 were included. Cobb angle, L5 tilt, C7 plumb line to center sacral vertebral line (C7PL-CSVL), and leg length discrepancy (LLD) were measured on standing PA whole-spine radiographs preoperatively. Sacral obliquity (SO), the slope of the upper endplate of S1, and iliac obliquity (IO), the tilt of the line connecting the iliac crests, were measured on standing PA whole-spine radiographs and MPR-CT (SO/IO-X-ray, SO/IO-CT, respectively). S1 angle and S2 angle were measured on CT. Results: The mean age of the patients was 18.7±3.9 years and all of them were females. SO-X-ray and SO-CT were larger than IO-X-ray and IO-CT, respectively. SO-X-ray was highly correlated with SO-CT (r=0.838, P<0.001). L5 tilt had higher correlation with SO-CT (r=0.884, P<0.001) than with SO-X-ray (r=0.726, P=0.001) and IO-CT (r=0.550, P=0.22). L5 tilt was correlated poorly with IO-X-ray (r=0.104, P=0.69). The S1 angle was 4.5±3.5° meanwhile the S2 angle was 1.2±2.1°, the sacral deformity was mainly due to the S1 vertebral wedging. Conclusions: Given the asymmetric sacral morphology, SO is more appropriate pelvic parameter than IO to represent the sacral tilt of Lenke 5C AIS, especially when measured using CT images to overcome the poor visibility on PA whole-spine radiographs
Brazilian Propolis Suppresses Angiogenesis by Inducing Apoptosis in Tube-Forming Endothelial Cells through Inactivation of Survival Signal ERK1/2
We recently reported that propolis suppresses tumor-induced angiogenesis through tube formation inhibition and apoptosis induction in endothelial cells. However, molecular mechanisms underlying such angiogenesis suppression by propolis have not been fully elucidated. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of ethanol extract of Brazilian propolis (EEBP) on two major survival signals, extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) and Akt, and to elucidate whether changes in these signals were actually involved in antiangiogenic effects of the propolis. Detection by western blotting revealed that EEBP suppressed phosphorylation of ERK1/2, but not that of Akt. Pharmacological inhibition by U0126 demonstrated that ERK1/2 inactivation alone was enough to inhibit tube formation and induce apoptosis. It was also shown that EEBP and U0126 similarly induced activation of caspase-3 and cleavage of poly ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP) and lamin A/C, all of which are molecular markers of apoptosis. These results indicate that inhibition of survival signal ERK1/2, and subsequent induction of apoptosis, is a critical mechanism of angiogenesis suppression by EEBP
