Clinical Course of Laryngeal Granuloma Without Surgical Treatment
Laryngeal granuloma is a rather common pathological entity, but its therapeutic strategy is
still controversial. In general, therapeutic strategy consists of medications such as steroids or
tranilast, in addition to vocal hygiene and surgery. Surgical removal is most commonly

Galaxy Colours in the AKARI Deep SEP Survey
We investigate the segregation of the extragalactic population via colour
criteria to produce an efficient and inexpensive methodology to select specific
source populations as a function of far-infrared flux. Combining galaxy
evolution scenarios and a detailed spectral library of galaxies, we produce
simulated catalogues incorporating segregation of the extragalactic population
into component types (Normal, star-forming, AGN) via color cuts. As a practical
application we apply our criteria to the deepest survey to be undertaken in the
far-infrared with the AKARI (formerly ASTRO-F) satellite. Using the
far-infrared wavebands of the Far-Infrared Surveyor (FIS, one of the
focal-plane instruments on AKARI) we successfully segregate the normal,
starburst and ULIRG populations. We also show that with additional MIR imaging
from AKARI's Infrared Camera (IRC), significant contamination and/or degeneracy
can be further decreased and show a particular example of the separation of
cool normal galaxies and cold ULIRG sources. We conclude that our criteria
provide an efficient means of selecting source populations (including rare
luminous objects) and produce colour-segregated source counts without the
requirement of time intensive ground-based follow up to differentiate between

AKARI Far-Infrared Source Counts in the Lockman Hole
We report initial results of far-infrared observations of the Lockman hole
with Far-Infrared Surveyor (FIS) onboard the AKARI infrared satellite. On the
basis of slow scan observations of a 0.6 deg x 1.2 deg contiguous area, we
obtained source number counts at 65, 90 and 140 um down to 77, 26 and 194 mJy
(3 sigma), respectively. The counts at 65 and 140 um show good agreement with
the Spitzer results. However, our 90 um counts are clearly lower than the
predicted counts by recent evolutionary models that fit the Spitzer counts in
all the MIPS bands. Our 90 um counts above 26 mJy account for about 7% of the
cosmic background. These results provide strong constraints on the evolutionary

The risk of hemorrhage in stereotactic biopsy
Objective : One major complication associated with STB is intratumoral hematoma, which is also the most common cause of morbidity related to permanent paralysis and mortality in STB. The risk of perioperative hemorrhage is generally between 1% and 10%, but this could be an underestimation since it is not common for many neurosurgeons to perform CT scans after uncomplicated STBs. In this study, we describe the incidence of cerebral hemorrhage, including asymptomatic cerebral hemorrhage. Methods : We recently reviewed data on the diagnosis rate and occurrence of complications, including symptomatic and asymptomatic cerebral hemorrhage, in 80 patients who underwent STB at our facility between 2005 and 2014. Results : Histological diagnosis was established for 75 cases (93.8%), glioma was the most frequently encountered tumor. Symptomatic hemorrhage was observed in two cases (2.6%), with the symptoms subsiding within two days. The morbidity and mortality rate was 0%. However, asymptomatic hemorrhages were observed in 23 cases (28.8%). Conclusion : Stereotactic biopsy is a less invasive procedure for obtaining samples of brain tumors for diagnosis. The bleeding of the tissue-resection cavity that includes asymptomatic hemorrhage occurs at a constant rate. It is important to reduce the symptomatic bleeding associated with stereotactic biopsy
North Ecliptic Pole Wide Field Survey of AKARI: Survey Strategy and Data Characteristics
We present the survey strategy and the data characteristics of the North
Ecliptic Pole (NEP) Wide Survey of AKARI. The survey was carried out for about
one year starting from May 2006 with 9 passbands from 2.5 to 24 micron and the
areal coverage of about 5.8 sq. degrees centered on NEP. The survey depth
reaches to 21.8 AB magnitude near infrared (NIR) bands, and ~ 18.6 AB
maggnitude at the mid infrared (MIR) bands such as 15 and 18 micron. The total
number of sources detected in this survey is about 104,000, with more sources
in NIR than in the MIR. We have cross matched infrared sources with optically
identified sources in CFHT imaging survey which covered about 2 sq. degrees
within NEP-Wide survey region in order to characterize the nature of infrared
sources. The majority of the mid infrared sources at 15 and 18 micron band are
found to be star forming disk galaxies, with smaller fraction of early type
galaxies and AGNs. We found that a large fraction (60~80 %) of bright sources
in 9 and 11 micron stars while stellar fraction decreases toward fainter
sources. We present the histograms of the sources at mid infrared bands at 9,
11, 15 and 18 micron. The number of sources per magnitude thus varies as m^0.6
for longer wavelength sources while shorter wavelength sources show steeper

Liver fluke infections by Amphimerus sp. (Digenea: Opisthorchiidae) in definitive and fish intermediate hosts in Manabí province, Ecuador
This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.Amphimerus sp. is a fluke that dwells in the biliary tracts of vertebrate definitive hosts including humans, domestic, and wild mammals in Latin America. Opisthorchiid liver infections are rarely studied in the Americas confirming its status as a neglected tropical disease. In Ecuador, small trematode eggs were reported in human cases from the province of Manabí in 1949, and recently, Amphimerus sp. adults were recovered from human and reservoir hosts in the province of Esmeraldas. Due to the lack of research on the infectious sources of Amphimerus sp. in the continent, we have developed a series of epidemiological studies with parasitological and molecular techniques to elucidate the endemicity of opisthorchiid fluke infections. We developed a cross-sectional study in three communities at Pedro Pablo Gómez parish in the province of Manabí, Ecuador. We examined a total of 176 fecal samples to detect opisthorchiid eggs, and four fish species to find opisthorchiid metacercariae. To study adult worms, we treated and purged seven patients in a family and dissected the livers of a dog and a cat infected. We observed morphological features of adults and metacercariae and used polymerase chain reaction with restricted fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and DNA sequencing of a section of the ITS2 gene for identification. Small trematode eggs were detected in 63 (35.8%) out of 176 fecal samples of residents in the three study sites. Adult opisthorchiid flukes were recovered from human patients, a dog and a cat, and they were morphologically and molecularly identified as Amphimerus sp. Opisthorchiid metacercariae were also identified molecularly as Amphimerus sp. in four fish species, i.e., Rhoadsia altipinna, Bryconamericus bucay, Andinoacara rivulatus, and Piabucina aureoguttata. Metacercariae of the heterophyid Haplorchis pumilio were also found in the four fish species examined. This is the first study to confirm the current endemicity of Amphimerus sp. in Pedro Pablo Gómez, Manabí, Ecuador. The adult worms isolated here shared morphological characteristics with previous Amphimerus sp. descriptions and were molecularly similar to Amphimerus sp. described in the province of Esmeraldas. Moreover, this study is the first to document four fish species as infection sources of Amphimerus sp. detected via a molecular protocol targeting the metacercariae of the parasite.
