Much more than talking: An emergent bilingual learner’s interactions in a New Zealand early childhood centre

This qualitative study uses a sociocultural perspective to examine the interactions of a child from a Chinese speaking home with his peers in a New Zealand early childhood centre. He was 3 years 3 months at the time of data collection. Data were gathered in three five-minute video recordings taken over a period of three weeks during free play in a group of children. Deductive coding revealed themes of active interaction, emotion, influence, and verbal interaction. The analysis, using Hawkins’ (2004) perspectives of learning environments, indicated that the use of culturally inclusive resources during free play allowed the children to create a community of learners and scaffold social and linguistic learning. The teacher chose to observe these interactions. One implication is that free play in an early childhood education environment without direct teacher guidance can be an important part of facilitating the learning of emergent bilingual children

Venetoclax causes metabolic reprogramming independent of BCL-2 inhibition

BH3-mimetics are a new class of anti-cancer drugs that inhibit anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 proteins. In doing so, BH3-mimetics sensitise to cell death. Venetoclax is a potent, BCL-2 selective BH3-mimetic that is clinically approved for use in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia. Venetoclax has also been shown to inhibit mitochondrial metabolism, this is consistent with a proposed role for BCL-2 in metabolic regulation. We used venetoclax to understand BCL-2 metabolic function. Similar to others, we found that venetoclax inhibited mitochondrial respiration. In addition, we also found that venetoclax impairs TCA cycle activity leading to activation of reductive carboxylation. Importantly, the metabolic effects of venetoclax were independent of cell death because they were also observed in apoptosis-resistant BAX/BAK-deficient cells. However, unlike venetoclax treatment, inhibiting BCL-2 expression had no effect on mitochondrial respiration. Unexpectedly, we found that venetoclax also inhibited mitochondrial respiration and the TCA cycle in BCL-2 deficient cells and in cells lacking all anti-apoptotic BCL-2 family members. Investigating the basis of this off-target effect, we found that venetoclax-induced metabolic reprogramming was dependent upon the integrated stress response and ATF4 transcription factor. These data demonstrate that venetoclax affects cellular metabolism independent of BCL-2 inhibition. This off-target metabolic effect has potential to modulate venetoclax cytotoxicity

Outlook and appraisal [November 1985]

The Scottish economy, like that of the UK as a whole, looks set to experience a substantial shift in the relative importance of the factors determining growth in the coming year. As discussed elsewhere in the Commentary (see British Economy), growth in the recent past has been driven mainly by the expansion of investment and exports. With the interrelated factors of sterling's strength and continuing high real UK interest rates operating against a background of some deceleration in the growth of world trade, the prospect is that these influences will be largely replaced by the re-emergence of consumers' expenditure as the principal determinant of growth

The recovery in the world economy which began in 1982 now appears to be moving out of its fastest growth phase. With the US economy growing more slowly in the first half of 1985 than in the corresponding period of 1984, the previous marked differences in growth rates between the US and the European economies are being eroded. Indeed, a number of European countries look set to achieve faster growth during 1984 than the US. Largely due to slower US growth, world trade is likely to expand this year by around 5J-6S as compared to 9% last year. The Bonn economic summit in May and subsequent policy statements provide no indications that the slackening momentum in the world economy is to be compensated for by reflation elsewhere

The pace of economic growth rose above the underlying growth rate in the first half of 1985 as a consequence of recovery from the miners' dispute and first quarter bunching of investment expenditure. In response to higher interest rates and the Chancellor's continuing commitment to the Medium Term Financial Strategy, sterling has strengthened and has remained resilient in the face of continuing uncertanties concerning oil prices. Output is set to grow by more than 3% this year before falling back as the impetus of the rebound from the miners' dispute diminishes and investment expenditure slackens. This slowdown in activity is likely to be reinforced by the current levels of the exchange rate and of interest rates

In his November Statement the Chancellor of the Exchequer has forecast continuing expansion of the economy during 1986. The recent growth of exports and investment is not expected to be maintained but consumer spending, boosted by higher real earnings and tax cuts in the Spring Budget, will rise
