    Proton pitch angle distributions in the Martian induced magnetosphere: A survey of Tianwen-1 Mars Ion and Neutral Particle Analyzer observations

    The pitch angle distributions of ions and electrons can be affected by various processes; thus, they can serve as an important indicator of the physical mechanisms driving the dynamics of space plasmas. From observations from the Mars Ion and Neutral Particle Analyzer onboard the Tianwen-1 orbiter, we calculated the pitch angle distributions of protons in the Martian induced magnetosphere by using information from the magnetohydrodynamically simulated magnetic field, and we statistically analyzed the spatial occurrence pattern of different types of pitch angle distributions. Even though no symmetrical features were seen in the dataset, we found the dominance of the field-aligned distribution type over the energy range from 188 to 6232 eV. Maps of the occurrence rate showed the preferential presence of a trapped-like distribution at the lower altitudes of the surveyed nightside region. Although our results are more or less restricted by the adopted magnetic field, they indicate the complexity of the near-Mars proton pitch angle distributions and infer the possibility of wave–particle interactions in the Martian induced magnetosphere

    The effectiveness of intensity-modulated radiation therapy versus 2D-RT for the treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

    BackgroundAt present, the management of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is mainly based on radiotherapy, but there are many radiation delivery techniques such as intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and 2-dimensional radiotherapy (2D-RT).Materials and methodsWe searched all the eligible studies through the PubMed, Cochrane Library, Medline, and Embase. The endpoint events in meta-analysis were overall survival (OS), tumor local control including local-regional free survival (LRFS), progression-free survival (PFS), and distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS), and late toxicities.ResultsA total of ten publications met the criteria and were identified through searches of the databases and references. We included 13304 patients in the meta-analysis, of whom 5212 received IMRT and 8092 were allocated to 2D-RT alone group. Compared with 2D-RT treatment, the IMRT group was associated with a better 5-year OS (OR = 1.70; 95% CI = 1.36-2.12), LRFS (OR = 2.08; 95% CI = 1.82-2.37), and PFS (OR = 1.40; 95% CI = 1.26-1.56). Additionally, the incidence of late toxicities such as late xerostomia (OR = 0.21; 95% CI = 0.09-0.51), trismus (OR = 0.16; 95% CI = 0.04-0.60), and temporal lobe neuropathy (TLN) (OR = 0.40; 95% CI = 0.24-0.67) for NPC patients in IMRT group were significantly lower than 2D-RT.ConclusionsThe meta-analysis demonstrates that IMRT provides improved long-term tumor overall survival and local control including LRFS and PFS. Additionally, IMRT yields a lower incidence of late toxicities induced by irradiation in NPC patients. Compared to 2D-RT, IMRT may be an effective treatment for patients with NPC. Further intensive studies should be pursued to examine the association

    Prognostic Value of Tumor Markers, NSE, CA125 and SCC, in Operable NSCLC Patients

    Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic value of tumor markers in operable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. A total of 481 NSCLC patients were enrolled in the present study. High levels of neuron-specific enolase (NSE), carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125) and squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCC) were detected in 306 (63.6%), 89 (18.5%) and 125 (26.0%) patients, respectively. Seventy-eight of 481 patients died of disease progression, and the median disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) were 16.0 and 21.0 months, respectively. The three-year DFS rate was 56.7%, and the OS rate was 75.3%. For serum NSE, the three-year cumulative DFS rate for the normal and elevated group was 67.7 % and 51.8 % (p = 0.007). The OS in patients with high and normal levels of NSE was 34.0 months and 48.0 months, respectively. The median DFS was 46.0 months versus 32.0 months (p = 0.001), and the OS was 48.0 months versus 44.0 months (p = 0.001) in patients with normal and high levels of CA125. For patients with squamous cell carcinoma, the overall survival was significantly shorter in patients with elevated levels of SCC (p = 0.041).     Attitude and practice on human papilloma virus infection and vaccination among students from secondary occupational health school: a cross-sectional study

    Cervical cancer (CC) is reported as the second-most common female cancer worldwide, of which 99% is caused by persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. HPV vaccine protects against HPV infection and most cases of CC, which has only been introduced for a short time in mainland China. This study aimed to evaluate the attitude and practice related to HPV infection and vaccination among students at secondary occupational health school (SOHS) in China. We conducted a cross-sectional study in Southern China where data of 2248 participants were collected through questionnaires to estimate attitude and practice of students. Only 4.1% believed they were easily infected by HPV, 38.2% were willing to receive HPV vaccine and 30.8% intended to do regular screening of HPV infection in the future. Students in the second grade (OR = 1.51, 95%CI [1.25, 1.81]) and third grade (OR = 3.99, 95%CI [2.53, 6.27]) were more willing to take HPV vaccine compared to students in the first grade. Among the non-vaccinated participants, the most frequent reason for not receiving HPV vaccine was insufficient knowledge about HPV (91.1%). Characteristics of higher grade, personal education before enrollment and academic performance, medical specialty, history of sex experience and HPV vaccine and family history of other cancers were associated with higher attitude scores (p < .05). Considering the increasing prevalence of HPV infection and the need of improvement in attitude and practice toward HPV, more education about HPV infection and vaccination should be incorporated into school curriculum

    Comparative Transcriptome Analysis Reveals the Effect of Lignin on Storage Roots Formation in Two Sweetpotato (<i>Ipomoea batatas</i> (L.) Lam.) Cultivars

    Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) is one of the most important crops with high storage roots yield. The formation and expansion rate of storage root (SR) plays a crucial role in the production of sweet potato. Lignin affects the SR formation; however, the molecular mechanisms of lignin in SR development have been lacking. To reveal the problem, we performed transcriptome sequencing of SR harvested at 32, 46, and 67 days after planting (DAP) to analyze two sweet potato lines, Jishu25 and Jishu29, in which SR expansion of Jishu29 was early and had a higher yield. A total of 52,137 transcripts and 21,148 unigenes were obtained after corrected with Hiseq2500 sequencing. Through the comparative analysis, 9577 unigenes were found to be differently expressed in the different stages in two cultivars. In addition, phenotypic analysis of two cultivars, combined with analysis of GO, KEGG, and WGCNA showed the regulation of lignin synthesis and related transcription factors play a crucial role in the early expansion of SR. The four key genes swbp1, swpa7, IbERF061, and IbERF109 were proved as potential candidates for regulating lignin synthesis and SR expansion in sweet potato. The data from this study provides new insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying the impact of lignin synthesis on the formation and expansion of SR in sweet potatoes and proposes several candidate genes that may affect sweet potato yield

    Blood Cadmium Level Is Associated with Short Progression-Free Survival in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

    The prognosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is poor with disease progression. Cadmium exposure is a risk factor for NPC. We aimed to investigate the effect of cadmium exposure, by measuring cadmium level, and clinicopathologic factors on NPC disease progression and prognosis. A total of 134 NPC cases were analyzed and venous blood samples were collected. Blood cadmium level was analyzed by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Clinical data were collected at baseline for patients and tumor characteristics from medical records. Progression-free survival (PFS) was analyzed during follow-up. The effect of cadmium exposure and clinical factors on PFS was analyzed by the Kaplan&ndash;Meier method and Cox regression models. Blood cadmium level was associated with history of disease and smoking history and pack-years. On Kaplan&ndash;Meier analysis, a high blood cadmium level, male sex, smoking history and increasing pack-years, as well as advanced clinical stage were all associated with short PFS. On multivariate analysis, blood cadmium level was an independent risk factor and predictor of NPC prognosis and disease progression. Cadmium exposure and related clinical factors can affect the prognosis of NPC, which merits further study to clarify

    Crop classification and acreage estimation in North Korea using phenology features

    In North Korea, reliable and timely information on crop acreage and spatial distribution is hard to obtain. In this study, we developed a fast and robust method to estimate crop acreage in North Korea using time-series normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) derived from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. We proposed a method to identify crop type based on NDVI phenology features using data collected in other areas with similar agri-environmental conditions to mitigate the shortage of ground truth data. Eventually the classification map (MODIScrop) was assessed using the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) statistical data and high-resolution crop classification maps derived from one Landsat scene (LScrop). The Pareto boundary method was used to assess the accuracy and crop distribution of the MODIScrop maps. Results showed that acreage derived from the MODIScrop maps was generally consistent with that reported in the FAO data (a relative error <4.1% for rice and <6.1% for maize, and <9.0% for soybean except for in 2004, 2008, and 2009) and the maps derived from the LScrop (a relative error about 5% in 2013, and 7% in 2008 and 2014). The classification accuracy reached 74.4%, 69.8%, and 73.1% of the areas covered by the Landsat images in 2008, 2013, and 2014, respectively. This indicates that features derived from NDVI profiles were able to characterize major crops, and the approaches developed in this study are feasible for crop mapping and acreage estimation in regions with limited ground truth data

    Object-based crop classification using multi-temporal SPOT-5 imagery and textural features with a Random Forest classifier

    In this study, an object-based image analysis (OBIA) approach was developed to classify field crops using multi-temporal SPOT-5 images with a random forest (RF) classifier. A wide range of features, including the spectral reflectance, vegetation indices (VIs), textural features based on the grey-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and textural features based on geostatistical semivariogram (GST) were extracted for classification, and their performance was evaluated with the RF variable importance measures. Results showed that the best segmentation quality was achieved using the SPOT image acquired in September, with a scale parameter of 40. The spectral reflectance and the GST had a stronger contribution to crop classification than the VIs and GLCM textures. A subset of 60 features was selected using the RF-based feature selection (FS) method, and in this subset, the near-infrared reflectance and the image acquired in August (jointing and heading stages) were found to be the best for crop classification

    Background: Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) exist extensively and several of these have been verified to be toxic. Prenatal exposure to PFASs has attracted much attention. Metabolome-wide association analyses can be used to explore the toxicity mechanisms of PFASs by identifying associated biomarkers. Objectives: To evaluate associations between the metabolites in maternal and cord serum and internal exposure to several common PFASs. Methods: Paired maternal and cord serum samples were collected from 84 pregnant women who gave birth between 2015 and 2016. Seven legacy and two novel PFASs were measured. A nontarget metabolomic method and an iterative metabolite annotation based on metabolic pathways were applied to characterize the metabolic profiles. Linear regression adjusted with the false discovery rate and covariates was used to indicate the associations. Results: A total of 279 features in maternal serum and 338 features in cord serum were identified as metabolites associated with PFAS exposure. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS) were two PFASs associated with more metabolites, while the two novel chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonic acids (Cl-PFESAs) showed less relevance to the metabolome. With pathway enrichment analysis, we found that three fatty acid metabolisms and retinol metabolism were correlated with PFAS exposure in maternal blood, and that sterol metabolism showed the correlation in both maternal serum and cord serum. Conclusions: We identified metabolites and pathways in pregnant women and fetuses associated with the exposure to several PFAS, indicating a promising application for metabolome-wide association studies.     Detecting advanced stages of winter wheat yellow rust and aphid infection using RapidEye data in North China Plain

    Yellow rust (Puccinia striiformis f. sp. Tritici) and aphid (Sitobion avenae F.) are two major biotic factors threatening winter wheat growth in the main growing region in northern China. The goal of this study was to develop a remote sensing based approach to reliably detect and discriminate yellow rust and aphid infection. The study was conducted in the North China Plain in 2017 based on RapidEye satellite images using three supervised classification algorithms, the maximum-likelihood classifier, the support vector machine, and the random forest. An overall accuracy of above 60% for aphid and above 70% for yellow rust can be achieved using a single image (May 7 or 10, 2017) with any of the three algorithms. With multi-temporal images, the overall accuracies both increased for aphid and yellow rust (above 70% and above 78%). Using the image acquired on 23 May 2017, joint infections by yellow rust and aphid can be detected with satisfaction (>73% overall accuracy), although confusion exists between the two infections. This study demonstrates that winter wheat disease/pest infection can be detected with remote sensing technologies, providing decision support to farmers, insurance companies, and government organizations in the agriculture sector
