    Micro Balloon Actuators for Aerodynamic Control

    A robust, large-force, large-deflection micro balloon actuator for aerodynamic (manoeuvring) control of transonic aircraft has been developed. Using a novel process, high yield linear arrays of silicone balloons on a robust silicon substrate have been fabricated that can deflect vertically in excess of one mm. Balloon actuators have been tested under cyclic conditions to assess reliability. The actuators have been characterized in a wind tunnel to assess their suitability as aerodynamic control surfaces and flight-tested on a jet fighter to assess their resistance to varied temperatures and pressures at high velocity

    Spinon-Holon binding in tJt-J model

    Using a phenomenological model, we discuss the consequences of spinon-holon binding in the U(1) slave-boson approach to tJt-J model. Within a small xx (x=x= hole concentration) expansion, we show that spinon-holon binding produces a pseudo-gap normal state with a segmented Fermi surface and the superconducting state is formed by opening an "additional" d-wave gap on the segmented Fermi surface. The d-wave gap merge with the pseudo-gap smoothly as temperature T0T\to0. The quasi-particles in the superconducting state are coupled to external electromagnetic field with a coupling constant of order xγx^{\gamma} where 0γ1/20\leq\gamma\leq1/2, depending on the strength of the effective spinon-holon binding potential.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure

    We analytically compute a localization criterion in double scattering approximation for a set of dielectric spheres or perfectly conducting disks uniformly distributed in a spatial volume which can be either spherical or layered.     Nonlinear Near-Field Microwave Microscope For RF Defect Localization in Superconductors

    Niobium-based Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) cavity performance is sensitive to localized defects that give rise to quenches at high accelerating gradients. In order to identify these material defects on bulk Nb surfaces at their operating frequency and temperature, it is important to develop a new kind of wide bandwidth microwave microscopy with localized and strong RF magnetic fields. By taking advantage of write head technology widely used in the magnetic recording industry, one can obtain ~200 mT RF magnetic fields, which is on the order of the thermodynamic critical field of Nb, on submicron length scales on the surface of the superconductor. We have successfully induced the nonlinear Meissner effect via this magnetic write head probe on a variety of superconductors. This design should have a high spatial resolution and is a promising candidate to find localized defects on bulk Nb surfaces and thin film coatings of interest for accelerator applications.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures Journal-ref: 2010 Applied Superconductivity Conferenc

    Hyperammonemia is less severe in arginase 1 deficiency compared with other urea cycle defects. Affected patients manifest hyperargininemia and infrequent episodes of hyperammonemia. Patients typically suffer from neurological impairment with cortical and pyramidal tract deterioration, spasticity, loss of ambulation, seizures and intellectual disability; death is less common than with other urea cycle disorders. In a mouse model of arginase I deficiency, the onset of symptoms begins with weight loss and gait instability, which progresses toward development of tail tremor with seizure-like activity; death typically occurs at about 2 weeks of life. Adeno-associated viral vector gene replacement strategies result in long-term survival of mice with this disorder. With neonatal administration of vector, the viral copy number in the liver greatly declines with hepatocyte proliferation in the first 5 weeks of life. Although the animals do survive, it is not known from a functional standpoint how well the urea cycle is functioning in the adult animals that receive adeno-associated virus. In these studies, we administered [1-13C] acetate to both littermate controls and adeno-associated virus-treated arginase 1 knockout animals and examined flux through the urea cycle. Circulating ammonia levels were mildly elevated in treated animals. Arginine and glutamine also had perturbations. Assessment 30 min after acetate administration demonstrated that ureagenesis was present in the treated knockout liver at levels as low at 3.3% of control animals. These studies demonstrate that only minimal levels of hepatic arginase activity are necessary for survival and ureagenesis in arginase-deficient mice and that this level of activity results in control of circulating ammonia. These results may have implications for potential therapy in humans with arginase deficiency

    Mgb2 Nonlinear Properties Investigated under Localized High RF Magnetic Field Excitation

    In order to increase the accelerating gradient of Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) cavities, Magnesium Diboride (MgB2) opens up hope because of its high transition temperature and potential for low surface resistance in the high RF field regime. However, due to the presence of the small superconducting gap in the {\pi} band, the nonlinear response of MgB2 is potentially quite large compared to a single gap s-wave superconductor (SC) such as Nb. Understanding the mechanisms of nonlinearity coming from the two-band structure of MgB2, as well as extrinsic sources, is an urgent requirement. A localized and strong RF magnetic field, created by a magnetic write head, is integrated into our nonlinear-Meissner-effect scanning microwave microscope [1]. MgB2 films with thickness 50 nm, fabricated by a hybrid physical-chemical vapor deposition technique on dielectric substrates, are measured at a fixed location and show a strongly temperature-dependent third harmonic response.     Dijet Cross Section and Longitudinal Double Spin Asymmetry Measurements in Polarized Proton-proton Collisions at \sqrt{s}=200 GeV at STAR

    These proceedings show the preliminary results of the dijet cross sections and the dijet longitudinal double spin asymmetries A_LL in polarized proton-proton collisions at \sqrt{s} = 200 GeV at the mid-rapidity |eta| < 0.8. The integrated luminosity of 5.39 pb^{-1} collected during RHIC Run-6 was used in the measurements. The preliminary results are presented as functions of the dijet invariant mass M_jj. The dijet cross sections are in agreement with next-to-leading-order pQCD predictions. The A_LL is compared with theoretical predictions based on various parameterizations of polarized parton distributions of the proton.
