    Specific heat study of spin-structural change in pyrochlore Nd2_2Mo2_2O7_7

    By measurements of specific heat, we have investigated the magnetic field (HH) induced spin-structural change in Nd2_2Mo2_2O7_7 that shows spin-chirality-related magneto-transport phenomena. A broad peak around 2 K caused by the ordering of 2-in 2-out structure of the Nd moments at zero HH shifts to the lower temperature (TT) up to around 3 T and then to the higher TT above around 3 T with increasing HH for all the direction of HH. This is due to the crossover from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic arrangement between the Nd and Mo moments. While the peak TT increases monotonically above 3 T for HH//[100], another peak emerges around 0.9 K at 12 T for HH//[111], which is ascribed to the ordering of 3-in 1-out structure. For HH//[110], a spike like peak is observed at around 3 T, which is caused perhaps by some spin flip transition.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Lattice-form dependent orbital shape and charge disproportionation in charge- and orbital-ordered manganites

    The orbital shapes and charge disproportionations at nominal Mn3+^{3+} and Mn4+^{4+} sites for the charge- and orbital-ordered phases have been studied on half-doped manganites Pr(Sr0.1_{0.1}Ca0.9_{0.9})2_2Mn2_2O7_7 and Eu0.5_{0.5}Ca1.5_{1.5}MnO4_4 with double-layer and single-layer Mn-O networks, respectively, by means of x-ray structural analyses, in comparison with Pr0.5_{0.5}Ca0.5_{0.5}MnO3_3 with the pseudo cubic network. In a single-layer Eu0.5_{0.5}Ca1.5_{1.5}MnO4_4 system, the (y2−z2y^2-z^2)/(z2−x2z^2-x^2)-type orbital shape is observed, while the (3y2−r23y^2-r^2)/(3x2−r23x^2-r^2)-type orbital shape in a pseudo cubic Pr0.5_{0.5}Ca0.5_{0.5}MnO3_3 system. In a double-layer Pr(Sr0.1_{0.1}Ca0.9_{0.9})2_2Mn2_2O7_7 system, the orbital shape is found to undergo a large change upon thermally induced rotation of orbital stripe. Furthermore, clear charge disproportionation is observed for the pseudo cubic and double-layer systems, while not in the single-layer system. These results indicate that the orbital shape and charge disproportionation are sensitive to the dimension of Mn-O network.Comment: 12 page, 5 figures, 11 table

    Perovskite Manganites Hosting Versatile Multiferroic Phases with Symmetric and Antisymmetric Exchange Strictions

    Complete magnetoelectric (ME) phase diagrams of orthorhombic RRMnO3_{3} with and without magnetic moments on the RR ions have been established. Three kinds of multiferroic ground states, the abab-cycloidal, the bcbc-cycloidal, and the collinear EE-type phases, have been identified by the distinct ME responses. The electric polarization of the EE-type phase dominated by the symmetric spin exchange (bmSicdotbmSjbm{S}_{i} cdot bm{S}_{j}) is more than 10 times as large as that of the bcbc-cycloidal phase dominated by the antisymmetric one (bmSitimesbmSjbm{S}_{i} times bm{S}_{j}), and the ME response is enhanced near the bicritical phase boundary between these multiferroic phases of different origins. These findings will provide an important clue for the development of the magnetically induced multiferroics.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    JHK Spectra of the z=2.39 Radio Galaxy 53W002

    We present low-resolution, near-IR JHK spectra of the weak z=2.39 radio galaxy 53W002, obtained with the OH-airglow Suppressor spectrograph (OHS) and Cooled Infrared Spectrograph and Camera for OHS (CISCO) on the Subaru Telescope. They cover rest-frame wavelengths of 3400-7200 A, and the emission lines of [O II]3727, Hb, [O III]4959, 5007, Ha, [N II]6548, 6583 and [S II]6716, 6731 were detected. Using the Ha/Hb line ratio, we find an extinction of E(B-V)=0.14. The emission-line ratios are reproduced by a cloud of electron density n_e=1x10^{3-4}(/cm3) with solar metallicity, ionized by an alpha=-0.7 power-law continuum with ionizing parameter U=1x10^-3. In addition to these emission lines, we make the first spectroscopic confirmation of the Balmer discontinuity in a high-z radio galaxy. Together with rest-frame UV photometry from the literature, we show that at least 1/3 of the present stellar mass was formed in the current starburst. The stellar mass was estimated to be (1-1.4)x10^11 M_sol by one-component model fitting, which is smaller than that of typical z~1 B2/6C radio galaxies. We suggest that 53W002 is currently assembling a large part of its stellar mass through merger events with the surrounding sub-galactic clumps, some of which can be identified with the Lya emitters detected in narrow-band imaging. After a few such events over the next few Gyr, 53W002 will evolve into a massive elliptical galaxy.Comment: 10 pages, including 11 figures. Accepted for publication in PASJ(2001). Revised 5/15/200

    Photoemission Spectral Weight Transfer and Mass Renormalization in the Fermi-Liquid System La1−x_{1-x}Srx_xTiO3+y/2_{3+y/2}

    We have performed a photoemission study of La1−x_{1-x}Srx_xTiO3+y/2_{3+y/2} near the filling-control metal-insulator transition (MIT) as a function of hole doping. Mass renormalization deduced from the spectral weight and the width of the quasi-particle band around the chemical potential μ\mu is compared with that deduced from the electronic specific heat. The result implies that, near the MIT, band narrowing occurs strongly in the vicinity of μ\mu. Spectral weight transfer occurs from the coherent to the incoherent parts upon antiferromagnetic ordering, which we associate with the partial gap opening at μ\mu.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
