Physiological Functions of Mitochondrial Reactive Oxygen Species
Mitochondria are the major energy producers within a cell in the form of adenosine triphosphate by oxidative phosphorylation. Normal mitochondrial metabolism inevitably generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), which have been considered to solely cause cellular damage. Increase of oxidative stress has been linked to various pathologies. Thus, mitochondrial ROS (mROS) were basically proposed as byproducts of oxidative metabolism, which undergo normalized by antioxidant enzymes. However, the mROS have extensively been esteemed to function as signalling molecules to regulate a wide variety of physiology. These phenomena are indeed dependent on mitochondrial redox status, which is dynamically altered under different physiological and pathological conditions. The oxidative stress is incurred by which the redox status is inclined to exceeded oxidation or reduction. Here, we attempt to integrate the recent advances in our understanding of the physiological functions of mROS
Demystifying Tacit Knowledge in Graphic Design: Characteristics, Instances, Approaches, and Guidelines
Despite the growing demand for professional graphic design knowledge, the
tacit nature of design inhibits knowledge sharing. However, there is a limited
understanding on the characteristics and instances of tacit knowledge in
graphic design. In this work, we build a comprehensive set of tacit knowledge
characteristics through a literature review. Through interviews with 10
professional graphic designers, we collected 123 tacit knowledge instances and
labeled their characteristics. By qualitatively coding the instances, we
identified the prominent elements, actions, and purposes of tacit knowledge. To
identify which instances have been addressed the least, we conducted a
systematic literature review of prior system support to graphic design. By
understanding the reasons for the lack of support on these instances based on
their characteristics, we propose design guidelines for capturing and applying
tacit knowledge in design tools. This work takes a step towards understanding
tacit knowledge, and how this knowledge can be communicated
Effects of moxibustion for constipation treatment: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials
Several studies reported that moxibustion was effective in treating constipation. This systematic review assesses the clinical evidence for or against moxibustion for treating constipation. Twelve databases were searched from their inception to March 2010. Only randomized clinical trials (RCTs) were included if they compared moxibustion with placebo, sham treatment, drug therapy or no treatment. The methodological quality of these RCTs was assessed with the Cochrane risk of bias analysis. All three RCTs included in the study had a high risk of bias. Two included studies found favorable effects of moxibustion. The third RCT showed significant effects in the moxibustion group. Given that the methodological quality of all RCTs was poor, the results from the present review are insufficient to suggest that moxibustion is an effective treatment for constipation. More rigorous studies are warranted
GenQuery: Supporting Expressive Visual Search with Generative Models
Designers rely on visual search to explore and develop ideas in early design
stages. However, designers can struggle to identify suitable text queries to
initiate a search or to discover images for similarity-based search that can
adequately express their intent. We propose GenQuery, a novel system that
integrates generative models into the visual search process. GenQuery can
automatically elaborate on users' queries and surface concrete search
directions when users only have abstract ideas. To support precise expression
of search intents, the system enables users to generatively modify images and
use these in similarity-based search. In a comparative user study (N=16),
designers felt that they could more accurately express their intents and find
more satisfactory outcomes with GenQuery compared to a tool without generative
features. Furthermore, the unpredictability of generations allowed participants
to uncover more diverse outcomes. By supporting both convergence and
divergence, GenQuery led to a more creative experience.Comment: 18 pages and 12 figure
Variability of the NGC 1333 IRAS 4A Outflow: Molecular Hydrogen and Silicon Monoxide Images
The NGC 1333 region was observed in the H2 1-0 S(1) line. The H2 images cover
a 5' x 7' region around IRAS 4. Numerous H2 emission features were detected.
The northeast-southwest bipolar outflow driven by IRAS 4A was studied by
combining the H2 images with SiO maps published previously. The SiO-H2 outflows
are continuous on the southwestern side but show a gap on the northeastern
side. The southwestern outflow lobe curves smoothly, and the position angle
increases with the distance from the driving source. The base and the outer tip
of the northeastern outflow lobe are located at positions opposite to the
corresponding parts of the southwestern lobe. This point-symmetry suggests that
the outflow axis may be drifting or precessing clockwise in the plane of the
sky and that the cause of the axis drift may be intrinsic to the outflow
engine. The axis drift model is supported by the asymmetric lateral intensity
profile of the SiO outflow. The axis drift rate is about 0.011 deg yr-1. The
middle part of the northeastern outflow does not exactly follow the point
symmetry because of the superposition of two different kinds of directional
variability: the axis drift of the driving source and the deflection by a dense
core. The axis drift model provides a good explanation for the large deflection
angle of the northeastern outflow. Other H2 emission features around the IRAS 4
region are discussed briefly. Some of them are newly found outflows, and some
are associated with outflows already known before
