Organic Farming Policies and the Growth of the Organic Sector in Denmark and the UK: A Comparative Analysis
There has been little systematic analysis of the extent to which organic farming policies have influenced growth in the organic sector. Analyses of organic farming policy instruments, for the most part, provide extensive and detailed reviews of instruments applied either in a single country or across countries. Hence, there is a great need to examine systematically whether there is a relationship between the introduction of organic farming policies and the growth of the organic food sector, and whether particular designs of organic farming policies are more effective than others. Assessing the potential economic benefits to farmers from various GM crops becoming available in the European Union by 2025: results from an expert survey
This paper reports on a study that identified a range of crop-trait combinations that are: agronomically suited to the EU; provide advantages to arable farmers and consumers; and are either already available in international markets, or advancing along the development pipeline and likely to become available by 2025. An expert stakeholder panel was recruited and asked for their views, using the Delphi approach, on the impact of these crop-traits on enterprise competitiveness, through changes to yields, production costs and product prices. In terms of input traits, there was consensus that traits such as herbicide tolerant/insect resistant (HT/IR) maize, HT sugar beet and HT soya bean would provide positive benefits for farmers. Output-side traits such as winter-sown rape with reduced saturated fats, were seen as offering benefits to consumers, but were either likely to be restricted to niche markets, or offer relatively modest price premia to farmers growing them. Our analysis of the financial impact of the adoption of GM crops more widely in the EU, showed that the competitiveness of the agricultural sector could well be improved by this. However, such improvements would be relatively small-scale in that large-scale national natural advantages from either economic or environmental conditions is unlikely to be overturned
Climate change knowledge and political identity in Australia
National data from the 2018 Australian Survey of Social Attitudes show that knowledge of climate change is positively associated with the scientific consensus position on anthropogenic climate change. Responses to factual quiz questions that include climate trigger terms such as âgreenhouse gasâ or reference to increased ocean temperature and acidification are influenced by oneâs political party identification, with Liberal and National party identifiers tending to score lower than Labor partisans on climate knowledge scales. Yet, responses to climate-related factual questions sans trigger terms are not influenced by political partisanship. Climate skeptics tend to score lower on climate knowledge scales than those who accept anthropogenic climate change, although skeptics also tend to have inflated confidence in their factual knowledge of climate change
Comparison of markets for organic food in six EU states.
This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference. Recent research confirms that the decision to convert is now highly influenced by financial incentives arising from EU regulations but the exact mix of incentives depends on prevailing government policies and access to premium markets so that the organic sector in most countries is now referred to as either government-led or market-driven. The objective of the paper is to compare development of the sector along these two polarities but set within the context of "common elements of interest" within new agrifood methodologies: time, space, power, and meaning (Cooke, Uranga and Etxebarria 1998; Morgan and Murdoch 2000). The paper presents preliminary findings relating to six EU States: UK, Ireland, Austria, Denmark, Portugal and Italy, and through the application of "worlds of production" to market outlets and suggests discourses that define these outlets. The analysis aims to inform the further study of farmer marketing decisions and practices

Farmersâ attitudes to disease risk management in England: a comparative analysis of sheep and pig farmers
The UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) identified practices to reduce the risk of animal disease outbreaks. We report on the response of sheep and pig farmers in England to promotion of these practices. A conceptual framework was established from research on factors influencing adoption of animal health practices, linking knowledge, attitudes, social influences and perceived constraints to the implementation of specific practices. Qualitative data were collected from nine sheep and six pig enterprises in 2011. Thematic analysis explored attitudes and responses to the proposed practices, and factors influencing the likelihood of implementation. Most feel they are doing all they can reasonably do to minimise disease risk and that practices not being implemented are either not relevant or ineffective. There is little awareness and concern about risk from unseen threats. Pig farmers place more emphasis than sheep farmers on controlling wildlife, staff and visitor management and staff training. The main factors that influence livestock farmersâ decision on whether or not to implement a specific disease risk measure are: attitudes to, and perceptions of, disease risk; attitudes towards the specific measure and its efficacy; characteristics of the enterprise which they perceive as making a measure impractical; previous experience of a disease or of the measure; and the credibility of information and advice. Great importance is placed on access to authoritative information with most seeing vets as the prime source to interpret generic advice from national bodies in the local context. Uptake of disease risk measures could be increased by: improved risk communication through the farming press and vets to encourage farmers to recognise hidden threats; dissemination of credible early warning information to sharpen farmersâ assessment of risk; and targeted information through training events, farming press, vets and other advisers, and farmer groups, tailored to the different categories of livestock farmer

Consumer attitudes towards production diseases in intensive production systems
Many members of the public and important stakeholders operating at the upper end of the
food chain, may be unfamiliar with how food is produced, including within modern animal
production systems. The intensification of production is becoming increasingly common in
modern farming. However, intensive systems are particularly susceptible to production diseases,
with potentially negative consequences for farm animal welfare (FAW). Previous
research has demonstrated that the public are concerned about FAW, yet there has been little
research into attitudes towards production diseases, and their approval of interventions
to reduce these. This research explores the publicâs attitudes towards, and preferences for,
FAW interventions in five European countries (Finland, Germany, Poland, Spain and the
UK). An online survey was conducted for broilers (n = 789), layers (n = 790) and pigs (n =
751). Data were analysed by means of Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA, exploratory factor analysis
and structural equation modelling. The results suggest that the public have concerns regarding
intensive production systems, in relation to FAW, naturalness and the use of antibiotics.
The most preferred interventions were the most âproactiveâ interventions, namely improved
housing and hygiene measures. The least preferred interventions were medicine-based,
which raised humane animal care and food safety concerns amongst respondents. The
results highlighted the influence of the identified concerns, perceived risks and benefits on
attitudes and subsequent behavioural intention, and the importance of supply chain stakeholders
addressing these concerns in the subsequent communications with the public
A comparison of the Bravyi-Kitaev and Jordan-Wigner transformations for the quantum simulation of quantum chemistry
The ability to perform classically intractable electronic structure
calculations is often cited as one of the principal applications of quantum
computing. A great deal of theoretical algorithmic development has been
performed in support of this goal. Most techniques require a scheme for mapping
electronic states and operations to states of and operations upon qubits. The
two most commonly used techniques for this are the Jordan-Wigner transformation
and the Bravyi-Kitaev transformation. However, comparisons of these schemes
have previously been limited to individual small molecules. In this paper we
discuss resource implications for the use of the Bravyi-Kitaev mapping scheme,
specifically with regard to the number of quantum gates required for
simulation. We consider both small systems which may be simulatable on
near-future quantum devices, and systems sufficiently large for classical
simulation to be intractable. We use 86 molecular systems to demonstrate that
the use of the Bravyi-Kitaev transformation is typically at least approximately
as efficient as the canonical Jordan-Wigner transformation, and results in
substantially reduced gate count estimates when performing limited circuit
