Seiberg-Witten prepotential for E-string theory and global symmetries
We obtain Nekrasov-type expressions for the Seiberg-Witten prepotential for
the six-dimensional (1,0) supersymmetric E-string theory compactified on T^2
with nontrivial Wilson lines. We consider compactification with four general
Wilson line parameters, which partially break the E_8 global symmetry. In
particular, we investigate in detail the cases where the Lie algebra of the
unbroken global symmetry is E_n + A_{8-n} with n=8,7,6,5 or D_8. All our
Nekrasov-type expressions can be viewed as special cases of the elliptic
analogue of the Nekrasov partition function for the SU(N) gauge theory with
N_f=2N flavors. We also present a new expression for the Seiberg-Witten curve
for the E-string theory with four Wilson line parameters, clarifying the
connection between the E-string theory and the SU(2) Seiberg-Witten theory with
N_f=4 flavors.Comment: 22 pages. v2: comments and a reference added, version to appear in

Corneal dendritic cells and the subbasal nerve plexus following neurotoxic treatment with oxaliplatin or paclitaxel
Immune cell infiltration has been implicated in neurotoxic chemotherapy for cancer treatment. However, our understanding of immune processes is still incomplete and current methods of observing immune cells are time consuming or invasive. Corneal dendritic cells are potent antigen-presenting cells and can be imaged with in-vivo corneal confocal microscopy. Corneal dendritic cell densities and nerve parameters in patients treated with neurotoxic chemotherapy were investigated. Patients treated for cancer with oxaliplatin (n = 39) or paclitaxel (n = 48), 3 to 24 months prior to assessment were recruited along with 40 healthy controls. Immature (ImDC), mature (MDC) and total dendritic cell densities (TotalDC), and corneal nerve parameters were analyzed from in-vivo corneal confocal microscopy images. ImDC was increased in the oxaliplatin group (Median, Md = 22.7 cells/mm2) compared to healthy controls (Md = 10.1 cells/mm2, p = 0.001), but not in the paclitaxel group (Md = 10.6 cells/mm2). ImDC was also associated with higher oxaliplatin cumulative dose (r = 0.33, p = 0.04) and treatment cycles (r = 0.40, p = 0.01). There was no significant difference in MDC between the three groups (p > 0.05). Corneal nerve parameters were reduced in both oxaliplatin and paclitaxel groups compared to healthy controls (p < 0.05). There is evidence of elevation of corneal ImDC in oxaliplatin-treated patients. Further investigation is required to explore this potential link through longitudinal studies and animal or laboratory-based immunohistochemical research
Are lay people good at recognising the symptoms of schizophrenia?
©2013 Erritty, Wydell. This is an open-access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are credited. This article has been made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund.Aim: The aim of this study was to explore the general public’s perception of schizophrenia symptoms and the need to seekhelp for symptoms. The recognition (or ‘labelling’) of schizophrenia symptoms, help-seeking behaviours and public
awareness of schizophrenia have been suggested as potentially important factors relating to untreated psychosis.
Method: Participants were asked to rate to what extent they believe vignettes describing classic symptoms (positive and
negative) of schizophrenia indicate mental illness. They were also asked if the individuals depicted in the vignettes required help or treatment and asked to suggest what kind of help or treatment.
Results: Only three positive symptoms (i.e., Hallucinatory behaviour, Unusual thought content and Suspiciousness) of schizophrenia were reasonably well perceived (above 70%) as indicating mental illness more than the other positive or negative symptoms. Even when the participants recognised that the symptoms indicated mental illness, not everyone recommended professional help.
Conclusion: There may be a need to improve public awareness of schizophrenia and psychosis symptoms, particularly regarding an awareness of the importance of early intervention for psychosis
What do -ray bursts look like?
There have been great and rapid progresses in the field of -ray
bursts (denoted as GRBs) since BeppoSAX and other telescopes discovered their
afterglows in 1997. Here, we will first give a brief review on the
observational facts of GRBs and direct understanding from these facts, which
lead to the standard fireball model. The dynamical evolution of the fireball is
discussed, especially a generic model is proposed to describe the whole
dynamical evolution of GRB remnant from highly radiative to adiabatic, and from
ultra-relativistic to non-relativistic phase. Then, Various deviations from the
standard model are discussed to give new information about GRBs and their
environment. In order to relax the energy crisis, the beaming effects and their
possible observational evidences are also discussed in GRB's radiations.Comment: 10 pages, Latex. Invited talk at the Pacific Rim Conference on

Completeness and timeliness of tuberculosis notification in Taiwan
Tuberculosis (TB) is a notifiable disease by the Communicable Disease Control Law in Taiwan. Several measures have been undertaken to improve reporting of TB but the completeness and timeliness of TB notification in Taiwan has not yet been systemically evaluated
Cosmological Birefringence: an Astrophysical test of Fundamental Physics
We review the methods used to test for the existence of cosmological
birefringence, i.e. a rotation of the plane of linear polarization for
electromagnetic radiation traveling over cosmological distances, which might
arise in a number of important contexts involving the violation of fundamental
physical principles. The main methods use: (1) the radio polarization of radio
galaxies and quasars, (2) the ultraviolet polarization of radio galaxies, and
(3) the cosmic microwave background polarization. We discuss the main results
obtained so far, the advantages and disadvantages of each method, and future
prospects.Comment: To appear in the Proceedings of the JENAM 2010 Symposium "From

An overview of the current status of CMB observations
In this paper we briefly review the current status of the Cosmic Microwave
Background (CMB) observations, summarising the latest results obtained from CMB
experiments, both in intensity and polarization, and the constraints imposed on
the cosmological parameters. We also present a summary of current and future
CMB experiments, with a special focus on the quest for the CMB B-mode
polarization.Comment: Latest CMB results have been included. References added. To appear in

Estrogen receptor-α polymorphism in a Taiwanese clinical breast cancer population: a case–control study
INTRODUCTION: Receptor-mediated estrogen activation participates in the development and progression of breast cancer. Estrogen receptor (ER)-α polymorphism has been found to be associated with breast cancer and clinical features of the disease in Caucasians. Epidemiologic studies have revealed that age–incidence patterns of breast cancer in Asians differ from those in Caucasians. Genomic data for ER-α in either population is therefore of value in the clinical setting for that ethnic group. METHODS: A case–control study was conducted to establish a database of ER-α polymorphisms in a Taiwanese population in order to compare Western and Taiwanese (Asian) distributions and to evaluate ER-α polymorphism as an indicator of clinical outcome. The ER-α gene was scanned in a Taiwanese clinical breast cancer group (189 patients) and in healthy individuals (177 healthy control individuals). PCR single-strand conformation polymorphism technology was employed and real-time PCR melting curve analysis was performed. RESULTS: Three sites of silent single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) were found, as reported previously in Western studies, but at significantly different frequencies. Among the three SNPs, the frequency of allele 1 (TCT → TCC) in codon 10 was significantly lower in breast cancer patients (32.0%) than in control individuals (40.4%; P = 0.018). We found that allele 1 (ACG → ACA) in codon 594 was less common in breast cancer patients with a family history of breast cancer (5.9%) than in those without such a history (19.6%; P = 0.049). Individually, both allele 1 in codon 325 (CCC → CCG) and allele 1 in codon 594 exhibited a reverse association with the occurrence of lymph node metastasis. Furthermore, incorporation of both SNP markers further increased predictive accuracy. CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that ER-α polymorphisms are correlated with various aspects of breast cancer in Taiwan. ER-α genotype, as determined during presurgical evaluation, might represent a surrogate marker for predicting breast cancer lymph node metastasis
