    Some reproductive parameters of Zanskari mares reared in an organized farm under tropical climate

    The present study was undertaken to record the data on duration of estrus, estrus cycle length, size of the follicle at ovulation, period of gestation and estrus after foaling (foal heat) in respect of Zanskari mares for 4 consecutive breeding seasons (2010–2014). The mares were closely monitored with transrectal ultrasonography for their follicle size variation and to determine size of the follicle at ovulation. The mares were inseminated with frozen thawed semen from Zanskari stallions. This is the first time ever that Zanskari stallion semen was cryopreserved successfully and viable foals were produced by using frozen semen via artificial insemination. The reproductive parameters of the mares of Zanskari breed in India are poorly investigated and thus no reports are available on reproductive characteristics of Zanskari breed till today in the literature. Our results can be useful as a ready reference for some of the reproductive characteristics and traits of Zanskari breed as well as indigenous horses reared under tropical region. The reproductive parameters analysed in the present study are fitting within the characteristics of the other Indian horse breeds reared under this region and the differences may be caused by breed effect and other environmental factors

    Biochemical components of seminal plasma and their correlation to the fresh seminal characteristics in Marwari stallions and Poitou jacks

    Aim: To investigate various biochemical components of seminal plasma in Marwari stallions and Poitou Jacks and to find out their correlation with that of the seminal characteristics. Materials and Methods: In this study, semen was collected from six Marwari stallions and six Poitou jacks aged from 4 to 6 years and with known fertility status. The semen collection from the stallions were collected during the breeding season, i.e., between the months of April and June. From the collected semen ejaculates, we estimated the values of some biochemical components, viz., total protein content, total lipid content, and enzymes such as glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT), glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), acid phosphatase (ACP), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) as well as concentrations of glucose, cholesterol, total calcium (Ca), and phosphorus (P) and correlations among different seminal parameters were statistically examined using the Pearson correlation coefficient. Results: In this study, we found positive correlations between semen volume as well as sperm concentration and GOT, GPT, ALP and ACP for both the group stallions. Significant correlation between motility and glucose, GOT and GPT could be an indication for their role metabolism and protection against free radicals to the spermatozoa. Conclusion: Based on the results, it is concluded that there is a positive correlation between some biochemical values such as glucose, Ca, ALP, and LDH and seminal parameters which play a key role in capacitation and onward movement of the spermatozoa

    During transit and storage in epididymis, spermatozoa undergo final maturation, acquire motility, functional competence and the ability to fertilise an oocyte. Epididymal secretions contain a complex biochemical milieu of diverse inorganic ions, proteins, metabolites and other molecules. Since it is believed that spermatozoa are translationally silent, proteins appearing in them are thought to be synthesised elsewhere, including epididymis, and then incorporated to the cells. One of the important mechanisms suggested to be involved in transfer of epididymal secretions to spermatozoa is through exosomes called epididymosomes. Epididymosomes released from the epididymal epithelium contain proteins, noncoding RNAs and distinct set of lipids that are transferred to spermatozoa while they pass through the different epididymal regions. Owing to the importance of these molecules for sperm maturation and fertilising ability, research on epididymosomes has gained increasing attention during the last decade. This review is focused on epididymosomes, with emphasis on recent advances in the understanding of mechanisms of epididymosomal cargo transfer to spermatozoa and potential roles of epididymosomes in sperm function and beyond.     Not AvailableThe biometry of scrotum and testes, age, body weight, semen characteristics and fertility rates were studied in two groups of pure Ongole breed bulls. Group-I (n=25) constitutes retrospective analysis of data previously generated in respect of above characters on mature bulls aged between 3 and 9 years. Group-II (n=9) bulls aged between 3 and 6 years were subjected to semen collection once a week and their body weight and scrotal biometry was recorded in different age group. 90 ejaculates equally distributed between bulls were used to study various physical characters and the fertility rate of each bull was evaluated by inseminating 20 estrus cows per bull. The average body weight of Group-I and Group-II bulls was 715.76 and 481.11 Kg and their mean age was 84.56 and 50.33 months respectively. A significant positive correlation (P85 per cent) fertility rates. The fertility rate was observed to be positively and significantly and correlated with scrotal circumference, sperm concentration, mass activity and percentage of live spermatozoa. From the results of the present study it may be concluded that the age, body weight and scrotal circumference were positively correlated. The pre freeze motility was significantly higher than post motility. The fertility rate was found to be consistently higher in Ongole in comparison to other Indian breeds.Not Availabl
