Degassifying and mixing apparatus for liquids

    Get PDF
An apparatus for degassing a liquid comprises a containment vessel a liquid pump and a header assembly (12) within the containment vessel in a volume above the reservoir of the liquid. The pump draws from this reservoir and outputs to the header assembly, the latter being constructed to return the liquid to the reservoir in the form of a number of stacked, vertically spaced, concentric, conical cascades via orifices. A vacuum source provides a partial vacuum in the containment vessel to enhance the degassing process

Local spin and charge properties of beta-Ag0.33V2O5 studied by 51V NMR

Local spin and charge properties were studied on beta-Ag0.33V2O5, a pressure-induced superconductor, at ambient pressure using 51V-NMR and zero-field-resonance (ZFR) techniques. Three inequivalent Vi sites (i=1, 2, and 3) were identified from 51V-NMR spectra and the principal axes of the electric-field-gradient (EFG) tensor were determined in a metallic phase and the following charge-ordering phase. We found from the EFG analysis that the V1 sites are in a similar local environment to the V3 sites. This was also observed in ZFR spectra as pairs of signals closely located with each other. These results are well explained by a charge-sharing model where a 3d1 electron is shared within a rung in both V1-V3 and V2-V2 two-leg ladders.Comment: 12pages, 16figure

Space radiation resistant transparent polymeric materials

    Get PDF
A literature search in the field of ultraviolet and charged particle irradiation of polymers was utilized in an experimental program aimed at the development of radiation stable materials for space applications. The rationale utilized for material selection and the synthesis, characterization and testing performed on several selected materials is described. Among the materials tested for ultraviolet stability in vacuum were: polyethyleneoxide, polyvinylnaphthalene, and the amino resin synthesized by the condensation of o-hydroxybenzoguanamine with formaldehyde. Particularly interesting was the radiation behavior of poly(ethyleneoxide), irradiation did not cause degradation of optical properties but rather an improvement in transparency as indicated by a decrease in solar absorptance with increasing exposure time

Investigation of space radiation effects in polymeric film-forming materials

    Get PDF
The literature search in the field of ultraviolet radiation effects that was conducted during the previous program, Contract No. NAS1-12549, has been expanded to include the effects of charged particle radiation and high energy electromagnetic radiation. The literature from 1958 to 1969 was searched manually, while the literature from 1969 to present was searched by using a computerized keyword system. The information generated from this search was utilized for the design of an experimental program aimed at the development of materials with improved resistance to the vacuum-radiation environment of space. Preliminary irradiation experiments were performed which indicate that the approaches and criteria employed are very promising and may provide a solution to the challenging problem of polymer stability to combined ultraviolet/high energy radiation

Enhanced thermoelectric properties of NaxCoO2 whisker crystals

Single-crystalline whiskers of thermoelectric cobalt oxide, NaxCoO2, have been grown by an unconventional method from potassium-containing compositions, and their transport properties, and chemical compositions were determined. The growth mechanism was analyzed and interpreted by means of thermogravimetric analysis. At 300 K, electrical resistivity r and thermoelectric power S of the whisker are 102 u ohm cm and 83 uV/K, respectively. The power-factor, S2/r, thus is enhanced up to ~ 68 uW/K2 cm.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Appl. Phys. Let

Development of 2MASS Catalog Server Kit

We develop a software kit called "2MASS Catalog Server Kit" to easily construct a high-performance database server for the 2MASS Point Source Catalog (includes 470,992,970 objects) and several all-sky catalogs. Users can perform fast radial search and rectangular search using provided stored functions in SQL similar to SDSS SkyServer. Our software kit utilizes open-source RDBMS, and therefore any astronomers and developers can install our kit on their personal computers for research, observation, etc. Out kit is tuned for optimal coordinate search performance. We implement an effective radial search using an orthogonal coordinate system, which does not need any techniques that depend on HTM or HEALpix. Applying the xyz coordinate system to the database index, we can easily implement a system of fast radial search for relatively small (less than several million rows) catalogs. To enable high-speed search of huge catalogs on RDBMS, we apply three additional techniques: table partitioning, composite expression index, and optimization in stored functions. As a result, we obtain satisfactory performance of radial search for the 2MASS catalog. Our system can also perform fast rectangular search. It is implemented using techniques similar to those applied for radial search. Our way of implementation enables a compact system and will give important hints for a low-cost development of other huge catalog databases.Comment: 2011 PASP accepte

Electrochemical synthesis and properties of CoO2, the x = 0 phase of the AxCoO2 systems (A = Li, Na)

Single-phase bulk samples of the "exotic" CoO2, the x = 0 phase of the AxCoO2 systems (A = Li, Na), were successfully synthesized through electrochemical de-intercalation of Li from pristine LiCoO2 samples. The samples of pure CoO2 were found to be essentially oxygen stoichiometric and possess a hexagonal structure consisting of stacked triangular-lattice CoO2 layers only. The magnetism of CoO2 is featured with a temperature-independent susceptibility of the magnitude of 10-3 emu/mol Oe, being essentially identical to that of a Li-doped phase, Li0.12CoO2. It is most likely that the CoO2 phase is a Pauli-paramagnetic metal with itinerant electrons.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure
