Generalized theory and application of Stokes parameter measurements made with a single photoelastic modulator

    Get PDF
We report in this paper a generalized theory that describes the interaction between a monochromatic light beam and an optical system that includes one photoelastic modulator, one analyzer, and one photodetector. Based on the theory, a detailed four-step procedure is presented, which allows a precise measurement of the four Stokes parameters. An analysis of the systematic and random errors arising from the four-step measurements is also given as well as a calibration procedure that involves the use of a general retardation plate. As a practical application the procedure is used to analyze the magneto-optical properties of magnetic thin films grown on GaAs(001) substrates

Magnetic anisotropy switching in (Ga,Mn)As with increasing hole concentration

We study a possible mechanism of the switching of the magnetic easy axis as a function of hole concentration in (Ga,Mn)As epilayers. In-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy along [110] is found to exceed intrinsic cubic magnetocrystalline anisotropy above a hole concentration of p = 1.5 * 10^21 cm^-3 at 4 K. This anisotropy switching can also be realized by post-growth annealing, and the temperature-dependent ac susceptibility is significantly changed with increasing annealing time. On the basis of our recent scenario [Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 147203 (2005); Phys. Rev. B 73, 155204 (2006).], we deduce that the growth of highly hole-concentrated cluster regions with [110] uniaxial anisotropy is likely the predominant cause of the enhancement in [110] uniaxial anisotropy at the high hole concentration regime. We can clearly rule out anisotropic lattice strain as a possible origin of the switching of the magnetic anisotropy.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.

    Organisation input and economic development

    Get PDF
In this paper we develop a framework in which organisation is treated as an input in a production firm. The determination of an equilibrium organisation input is described. Corresponding to the equilibrium a quasi-rent is earned by the organisation. Improvements in efficiency and technological change are regarded as substitution of organisation input for labour and capital inputs. Development sequences of three types of firms are discussed. For the large firm in a mature economy, organisation input is primarily generated within the firm. For the small firm, in a mature economy, entry and exit play the vital role. For the firm in an underdeveloped country little organisation input is generated, and there are good economic reasons why the substitution of organisation input for other inputs is inefficient. It is a better strategy for an underdeveloped country to import organisation inputs (but not organisation stocks) when they are needed, because of the relatively low costs of organisation inputs generated in the mature economies

Co-rich cobalt platinum nanowire arrays: effects of annealing

    Get PDF
The effects of annealing on the crystal structure and magnetic properties of Co-rich cobalt platinum nanowire arrays embedded in anodic aluminium oxide membranes have been investigated. For this purpose, a rapid thermal annealing to temperatures of 300 °C to 800 °C has been used. Transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy show that the nanowires have a mean diameter of 14 nm and an estimated wire density of 7.8×1010 cm-2. From x-ray diffraction patterns, we find that the nanowires are hcp and possess a preferred texture in which the c axis of the grains tends to lie along the major axis of the wire. Vibrating sample magnetometry measurements indicate that the easy axis is along the nanowire axis direction. Hysteresis loops, saturation magnetization, squareness ratio (Mr/Ms), and coercivity (perpendicular and parallel to the nanowire axis) have all been investigated as a function of the annealing temperature (TA). Coercivity parallel to the wire axis first increases with TA, attains a maximum at 600 °C (which is 150% of the as-deposited sample), and then decreases. By contrast there is relatively little change in the coercivity measured perpendicular to the wires. The saturation magnetization for the as-deposited sample is 1360 emu/cc and remains almost constant for annealing temperatures up to 500 °C: for TA>500 °C it decreases significantly. The maximum (Mr/Ms) ratio attained in this study is 0.99, the highest value reported thus far for cobalt platinum alloy nanowires. The data suggest that these materials are potential candidates for high-density magnetic recording media

Oscillation Phenomena in the disk around the massive black hole Sagittarius A*

We report the detection of radio QPOs with structure changes using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 43 GHz. We found conspicuous patterned changes of the structure with P = 16.8 +- 1.4, 22.2 +- 1.4, 31.2 +- 1.5, 56.4 +- 6 min, very roughly in a 3:4:6:10 ratio. The first two periods show a rotating one-arm structure, while the P = 31.4 min shows a rotating 3-arm structure, as if viewed edge-on. At the central 50 microasec the P = 56.4 min period shows a double amplitude variation of those in its surroundings. Spatial distributions of the oscillation periods suggest that the disk of SgrA* is roughly edge-on, rotating around an axis with PA = -10 degree. Presumably, the observed VLBI images of SgrA* at 43 GHz retain several features of the black hole accretion disk of SgrA* in spite of being obscured and broadened by scattering of surrounding plasma.Comment: 24 pages, 20 figures, revised version submitted to MN main journal (2010, Jan., 12th

Magneto-optical characteristics of magnetic nanowire arrays in anodic aluminium oxide templates

    Get PDF
Nanocomposite films consisting of regularly ordered iron nanowires embedded in anodic aluminum oxide templates have been fabricated and their magneto-optical properties studied by determining the four Stokes parameters of the transmitted laser beam (λ=670 nm), originally linearly polarized and at normal incidence to the film surfaces. The results of the nanowire arrays are found to be considerably different from that of bulk iron. While an increase in diameter of the nanowire leads to a substantial increase in the values of the Faraday rotation angles per unit length at a fixed value of the magnetic fields, they are substantially less than that of bulk iron, indicating that the effective media theory may not be directly applicable
