    Correlations of a bound interface over a random substrate

    The correlation function of a one-dimensional interface over a random substrate, bound to the substrate by a pressure term, is studied by Monte-Carlo simulation. It is found that the height correlation , averaged over the substrate disorder, fits a form exp(-(j/b)^c) to a surprising precision in the full range of j where the correlation is non-negligible. The exponent c increases from 1.0 to 1.5 when the interface tension is taken larger and larger.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure

    Interactive Simplifier Tracing and Debugging in Isabelle

    The Isabelle proof assistant comes equipped with a very powerful tactic for term simplification. While tremendously useful, the results of simplifying a term do not always match the user's expectation: sometimes, the resulting term is not in the form the user expected, or the simplifier fails to apply a rule. We describe a new, interactive tracing facility which offers insight into the hierarchical structure of the simplification with user-defined filtering, memoization and search.     Management of acute postoperative pain is important to decrease perioperative morbidity and improve patient satisfaction. Opioids are associated with potential adverse events that may lead to significant risk. Uncontrolled pain is a risk factor in the transformation of acute pain to chronic pain. Balancing these issues can be especially challenging in opioid-tolerant patients undergoing surgery, for whom rapidly escalating opioid doses in an effort to control pain can be associated with increased complications.     Free-energy landscape of the villin headpiece in an all-atom force field

    SummaryWe investigate the landscape of the internal free-energy of the 36 amino acid villin headpiece with a modified basin hopping method in the all-atom force field PFF01, which was previously used to predictively fold several helical proteins with atomic resolution. We identify near native conformations of the protein as the global optimum of the force field. More than half of the twenty best simulations started from random initial conditions converge to the folding funnel of the native conformation, but several competing low-energy metastable conformations were observed. From 76,000 independently generated conformations we derived a decoy tree which illustrates the topological structure of the entire low-energy part of the free-energy landscape and characterizes the ensemble of metastable conformations. These emerge as similar in secondary content, but differ in tertiary arrangement

    It is known that the interplanetary medium in the period approaching solar maximum is characterized by an enhancement in the occurrence of transient solar wind streams and shocks and that such systems are often associated with looplike magnetic structures or clouds. There is observational evidence that bidirectional, field aligned flows of low energy particles could be a signature of such looplike structures, although detailed models for the magnetic field configuration and injection mechanisms do not exist at the current time. Preliminary results of a survey of low energy proton bidirectional anisotropies measured on ISEE-3 in the interplanetary medium between August 1978 and May 1982, together with magnetic field data from the same spacecraft are presented

    The Significance of Nasal Carriage of Staphylococcus Aureus and the Incidence of Postoperative Wound Infection

    Staphylococcus aureus infections are associated with considerable morbidity and, in certain situations, mortality. The association between the nasal carriage of S. aureus and subsequent infection has been comprehensively established in a variety of clinical settings, in particular, patients undergoing haemodialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), and in patients undergoing surgery. Postoperative wound infections are associated with a high degree of morbidity and represent an important medical issue. Until recently, eradication of S. aureus nasal carriage by various topical and systemic agents had proved unsuccessful. Mupirocin is a novel topical antibiotic with excellent antibacterial activity against staphylococci. Recent studies have demonstrated that intranasal administration of mupirocin is effective in eradicating the nasal carriage of S. aureus and in reducing the incidence of S. aureus infections in haemodialysis and CAPD patients. It has been suggested that sufficient evidence now exists to test the hypothesis that eradication of the carrier state in surgical patients preoperatively may reduce the incidence of S. aureus postoperative wound infections
