    Calculation of ground states of four-dimensional +or- J Ising spin glasses

    Ground states of four-dimensional (d=4) EA Ising spin glasses are calculated for sizes up to 7x7x7x7 using a combination of a genetic algorithm and cluster-exact approximation. The ground-state energy of the infinite system is extrapolated as e_0=-2.095(1). The ground-state stiffness (or domain wall) energy D is calculated. A D~L^{\Theta} behavior with \Theta=0.65(4) is found which confirms that the d=4 model has an equilibrium spin-glass-paramagnet transition for non-zero T_c.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 31 references, revtex; update of reference

    Voluntary motor drive: possible reduction in Tourette syndrome

    Electrophysiologically, Tourette syndrome (TS) is characterized by shortened cortical silent period (CSP), reflecting decreased motor inhibition. However, voluntary versus involuntary aspects of inhibitory functions in TS are not well understood. Hence, investigating voluntary motor drive (VMD) could help to elucidate this issue. A group of 14 healthy adolescents was compared with subjects of same age suffering from TS with (N = 6) and without (N = 6) presence of distal tics. Basic resting and active motor thresholds (RMT and AMT, respectively) as well as suprathreshold transcranial magnetic stimulation-conditioned RMT and AMT were determined during the CSP. The difference between AMT and RMT was considered as VMD quantum. No group-differences were found in RMT or AMT. Subjects with distal tics showed reduced VMD compared to healthy controls while patients without distal tics did not differ from controls. In the second half of CSP, patients with distal tics showed also diminished VMD compared to tic-patients without distal tics. The findings support the notion, that TS shows possible reduction of VMD and is associated with central motor threshold alterations confined to the very motor networks related to the tics observed

    Ultrasound image matching using genetic algorithms

    Image compounding reduces the artifacts inherent in ultrasound imaging, but accurate matching of images for compounding depends on their accurate placement in the compound image plane. A method is presented to reduce displacement errors during compounding of ultrasound B-scans of a normal human shank. A genetic algorithm was used to place matching B-scans in the compound image. The method was tested on a phantom and was shown to reduce, but not eliminate, mismatches due to the displacement of B-scans from their original position in the compound image plane. The results can be extended to applications in lower-limb prosthetics, where ultrasound imaging can be used to visualise the internal geometry of amputees' residual limbs

    Hamartomatous Angiolipoma of the Parotid Gland (Sialoangiolipoma)

    Mesenchymal tumors of the salivary glands are rare and mostly localized to the parotid gland. We report on the clinico-pathological features of a distinct parotid tumor occurred in a newborn, showing glandular structures admixed with mature lipocytes and blood vessels in variable proportions. This was a well-circumscribed and slowly growing nodule of the superficial parotid lobe, mostly reddish in color with white-yellowish striations. Microscopically, a distinct lobular architecture was evident, along with normal-appearing acinar and ductal structures with interposed loose fibrous stroma. The latter contained aggregates of mature lipocytes and variably sized blood vessels. The morphological features of the lesion reported herein recapitulate those of sialolipoma but also include the presence of a prominent vascular component intimately admixed with both the glandular and the adipose tissues. At variance with salivary lipoadenoma, the glandular component in the current case distinctly showed all the cellular components of normal salivary (serous) glands. In consideration of the young age of the patient, the minimal growth rate and the histological features of the lesion, we hypothesize a hamartomatous origin for this lesion and propose the designation of sialoangiolipoma
