Lens or Binary? Chandra Observations of the Wide Separation Broad Absorption Line Quasar Pair UM425
We have obtained a 110 ksec Chandra ACIS-S exposure of UM425, a pair of QSOs
at z=1.47 separated by 6.5 arcsec, which show remarkably similar emission and
broad absorption line (BAL) profiles in the optical/UV. Our 5000 count X-ray
spectrum of UM425A (the brighter component) is well-fit with a power law
(photon spectral index Gamma=2.0) partially covered by a hydrogen column of
3.8x10^22 cm^-2. The underlying power-law slope for this object and for other
recent samples of BALQSOs is typical of radio-quiet quasars, lending credence
to the hypothesis that BALs exist in every quasar. Assuming the same Gamma for
the much fainter image of UM425B, we detect an obscuring column 5 times larger.
We search for evidence of an appropriately large lensing mass in our Chandra
image and find weak diffuse emission near the quasar pair, with an X-ray flux
typical of a group of galaxies at redshift z ~ 0.6. From our analysis of
archival HST WFPC2 and NICMOS images, we find no evidence for a luminous
lensing galaxy, but note a 3-sigma excess of galaxies in the UM425 field with
plausible magnitudes for a z=0.6 galaxy group. However, the associated X-ray
emission does not imply sufficient mass to produce the observed image
splitting. The lens scenario thus requires a dark (high M/L ratio) lens, or a
fortuitous configuration of masses along the line of sight. UM425 may instead
be a close binary pair of BALQSOs, which would boost arguments that

Swift Observations of GRB 050603: An afterglow with a steep late time decay slope
We report the results of Swift observations of the Gamma Ray Burst GRB
050603. With a V magnitude V=18.2 about 10 hours after the burst the optical
afterglow was the brightest so far detected by Swift and one of the brightest
optical afterglows ever seen. The Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) light curves show
three fast-rise-exponential-decay spikes with =12s and a fluence of
7.6 ergs cm in the 15-150 keV band. With an ergs it was also one of the most energetic
bursts of all times. The Swift spacecraft began observing of the afterglow with
the narrow-field instruments about 10 hours after the detection of the burst.
The burst was bright enough to be detected by the Swift UV/Optical telescope
(UVOT) for almost 3 days and by the X-ray Telescope (XRT) for a week after the
burst. The X-ray light curve shows a rapidly fading afterglow with a decay
index =1.76. The X-ray energy spectral index was
=0.71\plm0.10 with the column density in agreement with the
Galactic value. The spectral analysis does not show an obvious change in the
X-ray spectral slope over time. The optical UVOT light curve decays with a
slope of =1.8\plm0.2.
The steepness and the similarity of the optical and X-ray decay rates suggest
that the afterglow was observed after the jet break. We estimate a jet opening

Proton and Pion Production in Au+Au Collisions at 10.8A GeV/c
We present proton and pion tranverse momentum spectra and rapidity
distributions for Au+Au collisions at 10.8A GeV/c. The proton spectra exhibit
collective transverse flow effects. Evidence of the influence of the Coulomb
interaction from the fireball is found in the pion transverse momentum spectra.

Ferromagnetic behavior of ultrathin manganese nanosheets
Ferromagnetic behaviour has been observed experimentally for the first time
in nanostructured Manganese. Ultrathin ( 0.6 nm) Manganese nanosheets
have been synthesized inside the two dimensional channels of sol-gel derived
Na-4 mica. The magnetic properties of the confined system are measured within
2K-300K temperature range. The confined structure is found to show a
ferromagnetic behaviour with a nonzero coercivity value. The coercivity value
remains positive throughout the entire temperature range of measurement. The
experimental variation of susceptibility as a function of temperature has been
satisfactorily explained on the basis of a two dimensional system with a
Heisenberg Hamiltonian involving direct exchange interaction.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figure
Delivery of Dark Material to Vesta via Carbonaceous Chondritic Impacts
NASA's Dawn spacecraft observations of asteroid (4) Vesta reveal a surface
with the highest albedo and color variation of any asteroid we have observed so
far. Terrains rich in low albedo dark material (DM) have been identified using
Dawn Framing Camera (FC) 0.75 {\mu}m filter images in several geologic
settings: associated with impact craters (in the ejecta blanket material and/or
on the crater walls and rims); as flow-like deposits or rays commonly
associated with topographic highs; and as dark spots (likely secondary impacts)
nearby impact craters. This DM could be a relic of ancient volcanic activity or
exogenic in origin. We report that the majority of the spectra of DM are
similar to carbonaceous chondrite meteorites mixed with materials indigenous to
Vesta. Using high-resolution seven color images we compared DM color properties
(albedo, band depth) with laboratory measurements of possible analog materials.
Band depth and albedo of DM are identical to those of carbonaceous chondrite
xenolith-rich howardite Mt. Pratt (PRA) 04401. Laboratory mixtures of Murchison
CM2 carbonaceous chondrite and basaltic eucrite Millbillillie also show band
depth and albedo affinity to DM. Modeling of carbonaceous chondrite abundance
in DM (1-6 vol%) is consistent with howardite meteorites. We find no evidence
for large-scale volcanism (exposed dikes/pyroclastic falls) as the source of
DM. Our modeling efforts using impact crater scaling laws and numerical models
of ejecta reaccretion suggest the delivery and emplacement of this DM on Vesta
during the formation of the ~400 km Veneneia basin by a low-velocity (<2
km/sec) carbonaceous impactor. This discovery is important because it
strengthens the long-held idea that primitive bodies are the source of carbon

EEG alpha reactivity and cholinergic system integrity in Lewy body dementia and Alzheimer’s disease
Abstract: Background: Lewy body dementia (LBD), which includes dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and Parkinson’s disease dementia (PDD), is characterised by marked deficits within the cholinergic system which are more severe than in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and are mainly caused by degeneration of the nucleus basalis of Meynert (NBM) whose widespread cholinergic projections provide the main source of cortical cholinergic innervation. EEG alpha reactivity, which refers to the reduction in alpha power over occipital electrodes upon opening the eyes, has been suggested as a potential marker of cholinergic system integrity. Methods: Eyes-open and eyes-closed resting state EEG data were recorded from 41 LBD patients (including 24 patients with DLB and 17 with PDD), 21 patients with AD, and 40 age-matched healthy controls. Alpha reactivity was calculated as the relative reduction in alpha power over occipital electrodes when opening the eyes. Structural MRI data were used to assess volumetric changes within the NBM using a probabilistic anatomical map. Results: Alpha reactivity was reduced in AD and LBD patients compared to controls with a significantly greater reduction in LBD compared to AD. Reduced alpha reactivity was associated with smaller volumes of the NBM across all groups (ρ = 0.42, pFDR = 0.0001) and in the PDD group specifically (ρ = 0.66, pFDR = 0.01). Conclusions: We demonstrate that LBD patients show an impairment in alpha reactivity upon opening the eyes which distinguishes this form of dementia from AD. Furthermore, our results suggest that reduced alpha reactivity might be related to a loss of cholinergic drive from the NBM, specifically in PDD

Microbleeds in dementia with Lewy bodies

Their prevalence and clinical importance in dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is unclear. The objective of this study was to compare the rates of microbleeds in DLB with those in AD and healthy older people, and investigate associations between microbleeds and amyloid deposition, vascular risk and disease severity in DLB. Methods: DLB (n = 30), AD (n = 18) and control (n = 20) participants underwent clinical assessment at baseline and 1 year in this longitudinal observational study. 3T MRI (including T2* susceptibility weighted imaging) and florbetapir PET were carried out at baseline. Microbleeds were rated visually and a standardised uptake value ratio (SUVR) was calculated from florbetapir PET scans. Results: 40% of DLB subjects had microbleeds compared with 50% of AD and 15% of controls. Compared to DLB without microbleeds, those with microbleeds had higher systolic BP (156 ± 26 v. 135 ± 19 mmHg; p = 0.03), but did not have greater levels of vascular disease or amyloid deposition (SUVR 1.25 ± 0.24 v. 1.25 ± 0.22; p = 0.33). There was evidence of less severe dementia in DLB participants with microbleeds, but these differences may have been driven by a shorter disease duration in those with microbleeds. Conclusion: The presence of microbleeds in DLB is associated with higher blood pressure, but not with other measures of vascular disease or amyloid deposition. The relationship between microbleeds and clinical presentation remains unclear

Participants of the 2017 European Space Weather Week in Ostend, Belgium, discussed the stakeholder requirements for space weather related models. It was emphasized that stakeholders show an increased interest in space weather related models. Participants of the meeting discussed particular prediction indicators that can provide first order estimates of the impact of space weather on engineering systems

Quantitative EEG as a biomarker in mild cognitive impairment with Lewy bodies
Funder: GE Healthcare; doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.13039/100006775Abstract: Objectives: To investigate using quantitative EEG the (1) differences between patients with mild cognitive impairment with Lewy bodies (MCI-LB) and MCI with Alzheimer’s disease (MCI-AD) and (2) its utility as a potential biomarker for early differential diagnosis. Methods: We analyzed eyes-closed, resting-state, high-density EEG data from highly phenotyped participants (39 MCI-LB, 36 MCI-AD, and 31 healthy controls). EEG measures included spectral power in different frequency bands (delta, theta, pre-alpha, alpha, and beta), theta/alpha ratio, dominant frequency, and dominant frequency variability. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses were performed to assess diagnostic accuracy. Results: There was a shift in power from beta and alpha frequency bands towards slower frequencies in the pre-alpha and theta range in MCI-LB compared to healthy controls. Additionally, the dominant frequency was slower in MCI-LB compared to controls. We found significantly increased pre-alpha power, decreased beta power, and slower dominant frequency in MCI-LB compared to MCI-AD. EEG abnormalities were more apparent in MCI-LB cases with more diagnostic features. There were no significant differences between MCI-AD and controls. In the ROC analysis to distinguish MCI-LB from MCI-AD, beta power and dominant frequency showed the highest area under the curve values of 0.71 and 0.70, respectively. While specificity was high for some measures (up to 0.97 for alpha power and 0.94 for theta/alpha ratio), sensitivity was generally much lower. Conclusions: Early EEG slowing is a specific feature of MCI-LB compared to MCI-AD. However, there is an overlap between the two MCI groups which makes it difficult to distinguish between them based on EEG alone
