Rippled Cosmological Dark Matter from Damped Oscillating Newton Constant
Let the reciprocal Newton 'constant' be an apparently non-dynamical
Brans-Dicke scalar field damped oscillating towards its General Relativistic
VEV. We show, without introducing additional matter fields or dust, that the
corresponding cosmological evolution averagely resembles, in the Jordan frame,
the familiar dark radiation -> dark matter -> dark energy domination sequence.
The fingerprints of our theory are fine ripples, hopefully testable, in the FRW
scale factor; they die away at the General Relativity limit. The possibility
that the Brans-Dicke scalar also serves as the inflaton is favorably examined.Comment: RevTex4, 12 pages, 5 figures; Minor revision, References adde
JHK Observations of Faint Standard Stars in the Mauna Kea Near-Infrared Photometric System
JHK photometry in the Mauna Kea Observatory (MKO) near-IR system is presented
for 115 stars. Of these, 79 are UKIRT standards and 42 are LCO standards. The
average brightness is 11.5 mag, with a range of 10 to 15. The average number of
nights each star was observed is 4, and the average of the internal error of
the final results is 0.011 mag. These JHK data agree with those reported by
other groups to 0.02 mag. The measurements are used to derive transformations
between the MKO JHK photometric system and the UKIRT, LCO and 2MASS systems.
The 2MASS-MKO data scatter by 0.05 mag for redder stars: 2MASS-J includes H2O
features in dwarfs and MKO-K includes CO features in giants. Transformations
derived for stars whose spectra contain only weak features cannot give accurate
transformations for objects with strong absorption features within a filter
bandpasses. We find evidence of systematic effects at the 0.02 mag level in the
photometry of stars with J<11 and H,K<10.5. This is due to an underestimate of
the linearity correction for stars observed with the shortest exposure times;
very accurate photometry of stars approaching the saturation limits of infrared
detectors which are operated in double-read mode is difficult to obtain. Four
stars in the sample, GSPC S705-D, FS 116 (B216-b7), FS 144 (Ser-EC84) and FS 32
(Feige 108), may be variable. 84 stars in the sample have 11< J< 15 and
10.5<H,K<15, are not suspected to be variable, and have magnitudes with an
estimated error <0.027 mag; 79 of these have an error of <0.020 mag. These
represent the first published high-accuracy JHK stellar photometry in the MKO
photometric system; we recommend these objects be employed as primary standards
for that system [abridged].Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 14 pages, 5 Figure
Single ion implantation for single donor devices using Geiger mode detectors
Electronic devices that are designed to use the properties of single atoms
such as donors or defects have become a reality with recent demonstrations of
donor spectroscopy, single photon emission sources, and magnetic imaging using
defect centers in diamond. Improving single ion detector sensitivity is linked
to improving control over the straggle of the ion as well as providing more
flexibility in lay-out integration with the active region of the single donor
device construction zone by allowing ion sensing at potentially greater
distances. Using a remotely located passively gated single ion Geiger mode
avalanche diode (SIGMA) detector we have demonstrated 100% detection efficiency
at a distance of >75 um from the center of the collecting junction. This
detection efficiency is achieved with sensitivity to ~600 or fewer
electron-hole pairs produced by the implanted ion. Ion detectors with this
sensitivity and integrated with a thin dielectric, for example 5 nm gate oxide,
using low energy Sb implantation would have an end of range straggle of <2.5
nm. Significant reduction in false count probability is achieved by modifying
the ion beam set-up to allow for cryogenic operation of the SIGMA detector.
Using a detection window of 230 ns at 1 Hz, the probability of a false count
was measured as 1E-1 and 1E-4 for operation temperatures of 300K and 77K,
respectively. Low temperature operation and reduced false, dark, counts are
critical to achieving high confidence in single ion arrival. For the device
performance in this work, the confidence is calculated as a probability of >98%
for counting one and only one ion for a false count probability of 1E-4 at an
average ion number per gated window of 0.015.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Nanotechnolog
A Curvature Principle for the interaction between universes
We propose a Curvature Principle to describe the dynamics of interacting
universes in a multi-universe scenario and show, in the context of a simplified
model, how interaction drives the cosmological constant of one of the universes
toward a vanishingly small value. We also conjecture on how the proposed
Curvature Principle suggests a solution for the entropy paradox of a universe
where the cosmological constant vanishes.Comment: Essay selected for an honorable mention by the Gravity Research

Bulk Scale Factor at Very Early Universe
In this paper we propose a higher dimensional Cosmology based on FRW model
and brane-world scenario. We consider the warp factor in the brane-world
scenario as a scale factor in 5-dimensional generalized FRW metric, which is
called as bulk scale factor, and obtain the evolution of it with space-like and
time-like extra dimensions. It is then showed that, additional space-like
dimensions can produce exponentially bulk scale factor under repulsive strong
gravitational force in the empty universe at a very early stage.Comment: 7 pages, October 201
Optical Activity From Extra Dimension
Optical activity, like Faraday effect, is a rotation of the plane of
polarization of propagating light in a medium and can be attributed to
different sources with distinct signatures. In this note we discuss the effect
of optical activity {\it{in vacuum}} due to Kaluza-Klein scalar field ,
in the presence of an external electro-magnetic field. The astrophysical
implication of this effect is indicated. We also point out the possibility of
observing the same in laboratory conditions.Comment: Four Page
Friedmann-like equations for High Energy Area of Universe
In this paper, evolution of the high energy area of universe, through the
scenario of 5 dimensional (5D) universe, has been studied. For this purpose, we
solve Einstein equations for 5D metric and 5D perfect fuid to derive
Friedmann-like equations. Then we obtain the evolution of scale factor and
energy density with respect to both space-like and time-like extra dimensions.
We obtain the novel equations for the space-like extra dimension and show that
the matter with zero pressure cannot exist in the bulk. Also, for dark energy
fuid and vacuum fluid, we have both accelerated expansion and contraction in
the bulk.Comment: 9 pages, Accepted to publication in IJTP 26 June 2012. arXiv admin

Exact calculation of the radiatively-induced Lorentz and CPT violation in QED
Radiative corrections arising from the axial coupling of charged fermions to
a constant vector b_\mu can induce a Lorentz- and CPT-violating Chern-Simons
term in the QED action. We calculate the exact one-loop correction to this term
keeping the full b_\mu dependence, and show that in the physically interesting
cases it coincides with the lowest-order result. The effect of regularization
and renormalization and the implications of the result are briefly discussed.Comment: LaTex, 8 pages; minor correction
Geometrical structure effect on localization length of carbon nanotubes
The localization length and density of states of carbon nanotubes are
evaluated within the tight-binding approximation. By comparison with the
corresponding results for the square lattice tubes, it is found that the
hexagonal structure affects strongly the behaviors of the density of states and
localization lengths of carbon nanotubes.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, revised version to appear in Chin. Phys. Lett.
