Deze Toekomstvisie Pluimveehouderij 2015-2020 is in opdracht van Stichting Fonds voor Pluimveebelangen opgesteld door Thomas Plakké (Nutriconcepts) en Ruud Duijghuisen en Ferry Leenstra (Animal Sciences Group van Wageningen UR). De basis vormden een analyse van scenariostudies, gesprekken met stakeholders uit de pluimveesector - nationaal en internationaal – en gesprekken met diverse marktpartijen. Outcome of anxiety and depression in general health care:a three-wave 3.5-year study of psychopathology, disability and life stress
The outcome of anxiety and depression in general health care settings was examined. At follow-up, many cases no longer met the criteria of their baseline diagnosis and disability levels had substantially dropped. However, partial remission, not full recovery, was the rule, and was associated with residual disability. Depression had better outcomes than anxiety; mixed anxiety/depression did worst. Life events often triggered improvement except amongst mixed anxiety/depression patients.</p
Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate levels associated with decreased malaria parasite density and increased hemoglobin concentration in pubertal girls from western Kenya
In areas where Plasmodium falciparum malaria is endemic, parasite density, morbidity, and mortality decrease with increasing age, which supports the view that years of cumulative exposure are necessary for the expression of maximal protective immunity. Developmental changes in the host also have been implicated in the expression of maximal resistance. To further evaluate the contribution of host developmental factors in malaria resistance, we examined the relationship between P. falciparum parasitemia and pubertal development in a cross-sectional sample of 12 - 18-year-old schoolgirls from an area of intense transmission in western Kenya. Among pubertal girls, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) levels were significantly associated with decreased parasite density, even after adjustment for age. DHEAS levels also were related to increased hemoglobin levels, even after accounting for age and other determinants of hemoglobin level. These findings support the hypothesis that host pubertal development, independent of age and, by proxy, cumulative exposure, is necessary for maximal expression of resistance to malarial infection and morbidity, as assessed by hemoglobin leve

Do soldiers seek more mental health care after deployment? Analysis of mental health consultations in the Netherlands Armed Forces following deployment to Afghanistan
Background: Military deployment to combat zones puts military personnel to a number of physical and mental challenges that may adversely affect mental health. Until now, few studies have been performed in Europe on mental health utilization after military deployment. Objective: We compared the incidence of mental health consultations with the Military Mental Health Service (MMHS) of military deployed to Afghanistan to that of non-deployed military personnel. Method: We assessed utilization of the MMHS by the full cohort of the Netherlands Armed Forces enlisted between 2008 and 2010 through linkage of mental health and human resource information systems. Results: The total population consisted of 50,508 military (18,233 deployed, 32,275 non-deployed), who accounted for 1,906 new consultations with the MMHS. The follow-up was limited to the first 2 years following deployment. We observed higher mental health care utilization in deployed vs. non-deployed military personnel; hazard ratio (HR), adjusted for sex, military branch and time in service, 1.84 [95% CI 1.61–2.11] in the first and 1.28 [1.09–1.49] in the second year after deployment. An increased risk of adjustment disorders (HR 2.59 [2.02–3.32] and 1.74 [1.30–2.32]) and of anxiety disorders (2.22 [1.52–3.25] and 2.28 [1.50–3.45]) including posttraumatic stress disorder (5.15 [2.55–10.40] and 5.28 [2.42–11.50]), but not of mood disorders (1.33 [0.90–1.97] and 1.11 [0.68–1.82]), was observed in deployed personnel in the first- and second-year post-deployment, respectively. Military personnel deployed in a unit with a higher risk of confrontation with potentially traumatic events had a higher HR (2.13 [1.84–2.47] and 1.40 [1.18–1.67]). Conclusions: Though absolute risk was low, in the first and second year following deployment to Afghanistan there was an 80 and 30% higher risk for mental health problems resulting in a consultation with the Dutch MMHS compared to military never deployed to Afghanistan. Mutational profiling of kinases in glioblastoma
Background: Glioblastoma is a highly malignant brain tumor for which no cure is available. To identify new therapeutic targets, we performed a mutation analysis of kinase genes in glioblastoma.Methods: Database mining and a literature search identified 76 kinases that have been found to be mutated at least twice in multiple cancer types before. Among those we selected 34 kinase genes for mutation analysis. We also included IDH1, IDH2, PTEN, TP53 and NRAS, genes that are known to be mutated at considerable frequencies in glioblastoma. In total, 174 exons of 39 genes in 113 glioblastoma samples from 109 patients and 16 high-grade glioma (HGG) cell lines were sequenced. Results: Our mutation analysis led to the identification of 148 non-synonymous somatic mutations, of which 25 have not been reported before in glioblastoma. Somatic mutations were found in TP53, PTEN, IDH1, PIK3CA, EGFR, BRAF, EPHA3, NRAS, TGFBR2, FLT3 and RPS6KC1. Mapping the mutated genes into known signaling pathways revealed that the large majority of them plays a central role in the PI3K-AKT pathway. Conclusions: The knowledge that at least 50% of glioblastoma tumors display mutational activation of the PI3K-AKT pathway should offer new opportunities for the rational development of therapeutic approaches for glioblastomas. However, due to the development of resistance mechanisms, kinase inhibition studies targeting the PI3K-AKT pathway for relapsing glioblastoma have mostly failed thus far. Other therapies should be investigated, targeting early events in gliomagenesis that involve both kinases and non-kinases
An addressable quantum dot qubit with fault-tolerant control fidelity
Exciting progress towards spin-based quantum computing has recently been made
with qubits realized using nitrogen-vacancy (N-V) centers in diamond and
phosphorus atoms in silicon, including the demonstration of long coherence
times made possible by the presence of spin-free isotopes of carbon and
silicon. However, despite promising single-atom nanotechnologies, there remain
substantial challenges in coupling such qubits and addressing them
individually. Conversely, lithographically defined quantum dots have an
exchange coupling that can be precisely engineered, but strong coupling to
noise has severely limited their dephasing times and control fidelities. Here
we combine the best aspects of both spin qubit schemes and demonstrate a
gate-addressable quantum dot qubit in isotopically engineered silicon with a
control fidelity of 99.6%, obtained via Clifford based randomized benchmarking
and consistent with that required for fault-tolerant quantum computing. This
qubit has orders of magnitude improved coherence times compared with other
quantum dot qubits, with T_2* = 120 mus and T_2 = 28 ms. By gate-voltage tuning
of the electron g*-factor, we can Stark shift the electron spin resonance (ESR)
frequency by more than 3000 times the 2.4 kHz ESR linewidth, providing a direct
path to large-scale arrays of addressable high-fidelity qubits that are
compatible with existing manufacturing technologies
