    Engineering Negative Differential Conductance with the Cu(111) Surface State

    Low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy are employed to investigate electron tunneling from a C60-terminated tip into a Cu(111) surface. Tunneling between a C60 orbital and the Shockley surface states of copper is shown to produce negative differential conductance (NDC) contrary to conventional expectations. NDC can be tuned through barrier thickness or C60 orientation up to complete extinction. The orientation dependence of NDC is a result of a symmetry matching between the molecular tip and the surface states.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl

    Controlling quasiparticle excitations in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate

    We describe an approach to quantum control of the quasiparticle excitations in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate based on adiabatic and diabatic changes in the trap anisotropy. We describe our approach in the context of Landau-Zener transition at the avoided crossings in the quasiparticle excitation spectrum. We show that there can be population oscillation between different modes at the specific aspect ratios of the trapping potential at which the mode energies are almost degenerate. These effects may have implications in the expansion of an excited condensate as well as the dynamics of a moving condensate in an atomic wave guide with a varying width

    There is a pressing need for evidence on effective COVID-19 pandemic mitigation efforts. The impact of the pandemic has been far-reaching, making management of the outbreak a daunting task for many countries. As the whole world continues to fight against the pandemic, a close examination of best practices of pandemic management is ever timely. Based on social marketing concepts, this paper reviews the system-level communication strategies used in South Korea in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. South Korea has received growing recognition for its response to the COVID-19 pandemic and provides a noteworthy example of positive and effective pandemic communication. Applying a social marketing mix framework, the paper examines South Korean pandemic communication strategies and identified a high degree of transparency and coherence two major success factors. This paper contributes to the current and future healthcare management literature and practice by delineating factors underscoring successful public health crisis management

    Spectrum of TeV Particles in Warped Supersymmetric Grand Unification

    In warped supersymmetric grand unification, XY gauge particles appear near the TeV scale along with Kaluza-Klein towers of the standard model gauge fields. In spite of this exotic low-energy physics, MSSM gauge coupling unification is preserved and proton decay is naturally suppressed. In this paper we study in detail the low-lying mass spectrum of superparticles and GUT particles in this theory, taking supersymmetry breaking to be localized to the TeV brane. The masses of the MSSM particles, Kaluza-Klein modes, and XY states are all determined by two parameters, one which fixes the strength of the supersymmetry breaking and the other which sets the scale of the infrared brane. A particularly interesting result is that for relatively strong supersymmetry breaking, the XY gauginos and the lowest Kaluza-Klein excitations of the MSSM gauginos may both lie within reach of the LHC, providing the possibility that the underlying unified gauge symmetry and the enhanced N=2 supersymmetry of the theory will both be revealed.Comment: 29 pages, 5 figure

    The Fabry disease-associated lipid Lyso-Gb3 enhances voltage-gated calcium currents in sensory neurons and causes pain

    Fabry disease is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder characterised by accumulation of glycosphingolipids, and accompanied by clinical manifestations, such as cardiac disorders, renal failure, pain and peripheral neuropathy. Globotriaosylsphingosine (lyso-Gb3), a deacylated form of globotriaosylceramide (Gb3), has emerged as a marker of Fabry disease. We investigated the link between Gb3, lyso-Gb3 and pain. Plantar administration of lyso-Gb3 or Gb3 caused mechanical allodynia in healthy mice. In vitro application of 100nM lyso-Gb3 caused uptake of extracellular calcium in 10% of sensory neurons expressing nociceptor markers, rising to 40% of neurons at 1μM, a concentration that may occur in Fabry disease patients. Peak current densities of voltage-dependent Ca(2+) channels were substantially enhanced by application of 1μM lyso-Gb3. These studies suggest a direct role for lyso-Gb3 in the sensitisation of peripheral nociceptive neurons that may provide an opportunity for therapeutic intervention in the treatment of Fabry disease-associated pain

    String or M theory axion as a quintessence

    A slow-rolling scalar field (QQ\equiv Quintessence) with potential energy VQ(3×103eV)4V_Q\sim (3\times 10^{-3} {\rm eV})^4 has been proposed as the origin of accelerating universe at present. We investigate the effective potential of QQ in the framework of supergravity model including the quantum corrections induced by generic (nonrenormalizable) couplings of QQ to the gauge and charged matter multiplets. It is argued that the K\"ahler potential, superpotential and gauge kinetic functions of the underlying supergravity model are required to be invariant under the variation of QQ with an extremely fine accuracy in order to provide a working quintessence potential. Applying these results for string or MM-theory, we point out that the heterotic MM-theory or Type I string axion can be a plausible candidate for quintessence if (i) it does not couple to the instanton number of gauge interactions not weaker than those of the standard model and (ii) the modulus partner Re(Z){\rm Re}(Z) of the periodic quintessence axion Im(Z)Im(Z)+1{\rm Im}(Z)\equiv {\rm Im}(Z)+1 has a large VEV: Re(Z)12πln(m3/22MPlanck2/VQ){\rm Re}(Z)\sim \frac{1}{2\pi}\ln(m_{3/2}^2 M_{Planck}^2/V_Q). It is stressed that such a large Re(Z){\rm Re}(Z) gives the gauge unification scale at around the phenomenologically favored value 3×10163\times 10^{16} GeV. To provide an accelerating universe, the quintessence axion should be at near the top of its effective potential at present, which requires a severe fine tuning of the initial condition of QQ and Q˙\dot{Q} in the early universe. We discuss a late time inflation scenario based on the modular and CP invariance of the moduli effective potential, yielding the required initial condition in a natural manner if the K\"ahler metric of the quintessence axion superfield receives a sizable nonperturbative contribution.Comment: 23 pages, 3 figures, version to be published at Phys.     Entropic sampling dynamics of the globally-coupled kinetic Ising model

    The entropic sampling dynamics based on the reversible information transfer to and from the environment is applied to the globally coupled Ising model in the presence of an oscillating magnetic field. When the driving frequency is low enough, coherence between the magnetization and the external magnetic field is observed; such behavior tends to weaken with the system size. The time-scale matching between the intrinsic time scale, defined in the absence of the external magnetic field, and the extrinsic time scale, given by the inverse of the driving frequency, is used to explain the observed coherence behavior.Comment: 8 page
