    First and second order magnetic and structural transitions in BaFe2(1x)_{2(1-x)}Co2x_{2x}As2_{2}

    We present here high resolution magnetization measurements on high-quality BaFe2(1x)_{2(1-x)}Co2x_{2x}As2_{2}, 0\leqx\leq0.046 as-grown single crystals. The results confirm the existence of a magnetic tricritical point in the (xx,TT) plane at xtrm^{m}_{tr}\approx0.022 and reveal the emergence of the heat capacity anomaly associated with the onset of the structural transition at xs^{s}\approx0.0064. We show that the samples with doping near xtrm^{m}_{tr} do not show superconductivity, but rather superconductivity emerges at a slightly higher cobalt doping, x\approx0.0315Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Co atoms on Bi2_{2}Se3_{3} revealing a coverage dependent spin reorientation transition

    We investigate Co nanostructures on Bi2_{2}Se3_{3} by means of scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy [STM/STS], X-ray absorption spectroscopy [XAS], X-ray magnetic dichroism [XMCD] and calculations using the density functional theory [DFT]. In the single adatom regime we find two different adsorption sites by STM. Our calculations reveal these to be the fcc and hcp hollow sites of the substrate. STS shows a pronounced peak for only one species of the Co adatoms indicating different electronic properties of both types. These are explained on the basis of our DFT calculations by different hybridizations with the substrate. Using XMCD we find a coverage dependent spin reorientation transition from easy-plane toward out-of-plane. We suggest clustering to be the predominant cause for this observation.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

    Modelling of hydrodynamic phenomena occurring in refining ladles for high-carbon Fe-Si alloys

    This paper presents the results of research conducted with the use of water physical model of refining ladle for production of high-carbon FeSi alloys. The purpose of the research was to determine the possibilities to enhance the efficiency of the production process by using combined gas injection into the bath. The research involved analysis of four variants of the experiment. Those variants varied in terms of the location of a purging plug fitted in the model bottom and the application of immersion lance to support the process. The research involved the analysis of changes in the hydrodynamic effects in the ladle model occurring as a result of the gas injection. The tests consisted in a qualitative analysis (process visualisation) in order to identify the movement of the modelling liquid and the mechanism of gas bubbles behaviour in the liquid

    In the region of Wielkopolska, unfavourable climatic conditions, particularly periodical shortage of precipitation, have contributed to a rapid degradation of pastures in dairy farms. In grass-clover mixtures Trifolium repens (Tr) is found to disappear very quickly from the sward. In consequence the DM yield and herbage quality in summer is low. One of the methods of improving of pasture sward and reducing the seasonality of forage production is overdrilling (OD). Many factors affect the success of this undertaking (Sheldrick 2000).     Strong out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy of Fe adatoms on Bi2_2Te3_3

    The electronic and magnetic properties of individual Fe atoms adsorbed on the surface of the topological insulator Bi2_2Te3_3(111) are investigated. Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy prove the existence of two distinct types of Fe species, while our first-principles calculations assign them to Fe adatoms in the hcp and fcc hollow sites. The combination of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements and angular dependent magnetization curves reveals out-of-plane anisotropies for both species with anisotropy constants of Kfcc=(10±4)K_{\text{fcc}} = (10 \pm 4) meV/atom and Khcp=(8±4)K_{\text{hcp}} = (8 \pm 4) meV/atom.     A Description of Quasar Variability Measured Using Repeated SDSS and POSS Imaging

    We provide a quantitative description and statistical interpretation of the optical continuum variability of quasars. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) has obtained repeated imaging in five UV-to-IR photometric bands for 33,881 spectroscopically confirmed quasars. About 10,000 quasars have an average of 60 observations in each band obtained over a decade along Stripe 82 (S82), whereas the remaining ~25,000 have 2-3 observations due to scan overlaps. The observed time lags span the range from a day to almost 10 years, and constrain quasar variability at rest-frame time lags of up to 4 years, and at rest-frame wavelengths from 1000A to 6000A. We publicly release a user-friendly catalog of quasars from the SDSS Data Release 7 that have been observed at least twice in SDSS or once in both SDSS and the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey, and we use it to analyze the ensemble properties of quasar variability. Based on a damped random walk (DRW) model defined by a characteristic time scale and an asymptotic variability amplitude that scale with the luminosity, black hole mass, and rest wavelength for individual quasars calibrated in S82, we can fully explain the ensemble variability statistics of the non-S82 quasars such as the exponential distribution of large magnitude changes. All available data are consistent with the DRW model as a viable description of the optical continuum variability of quasars on time scales of ~5-2000 days in the rest frame. We use these models to predict the incidence of quasar contamination in transient surveys such as those from PTF and LSST.Comment: 33 pages, 19 figures, replaced with accepted version.     Verwey transition in Fe3_{3}O4_{4} at high pressure: quantum critical behavior at the onset of metallization

    We provide evidence for the existence of a {\em quantum critical point} at the metallization of magnetite Fe3_{3}O4_{4} at an applied pressure of pc8p_{c} \approx 8 GPa. We show that the present ac magnetic susceptibility data support earlier resistivity data. The Verwey temperature scales with pressure TV(1p/pc)νT_{V}\sim (1-p/p_{c})^{\nu}, with ν1/3\nu\sim 1/3. The resistivity data shows a temperature dependence ρ(T)=ρ0+ATn\rho(T)=\rho_{0}+AT^{n}, with n3n\simeq 3 above and 2.5 at the critical pressure, respectively. This difference in nn with pressure is a sign of critical behavior at pcp_{c}. The magnetic susceptibility is smooth near the critical pressure, both at the Verwey transition and near the ferroelectric anomaly. A comparison with the critical behavior observed in the Mott-Hubbard and related systems is made.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    Emergence of long memory in stock volatility from a modified Mike-Farmer model

    The Mike-Farmer (MF) model was constructed empirically based on the continuous double auction mechanism in an order-driven market, which can successfully reproduce the cubic law of returns and the diffusive behavior of stock prices at the transaction level. However, the volatility (defined by absolute return) in the MF model does not show sound long memory. We propose a modified version of the MF model by including a new ingredient, that is, long memory in the aggressiveness (quantified by the relative prices) of incoming orders, which is an important stylized fact identified by analyzing the order flows of 23 liquid Chinese stocks. Long memory emerges in the volatility synthesized from the modified MF model with the DFA scaling exponent close to 0.76, and the cubic law of returns and the diffusive behavior of prices are also produced at the same time. We also find that the long memory of order signs has no impact on the long memory property of volatility, and the memory effect of order aggressiveness has little impact on the diffusiveness of stock prices.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures and 1 tabl
