Making a Public Difference in the Ministry of Word and Witness

Today, the liberating movement of faith and a new cycle of societal change coincide to bring our churches and North American society itself to a turning point. The ecclesial and social situation alike call for a new era of ministry to make a public difference. My presentation will focus on the ethical contours of faithful community empowered by the living Word, and some public dimensions of parish ministry that responds to the Word through social witness
Why metallic surfaces with grooves a few nanometers deep and wide may strongly absorb visible light
It is theoretically shown that nanometric silver lamellar gratings present
very strong visible light absorption inside the grooves, leading to electric
field intensities by several orders of magnitude larger than that of the
impinging light. This effect, due to the excitation of long wave vector surface
plasmon polaritons with particular small penetration depth in the metal, may
explain the abnormal optical absorption observed a long time ago on almost flat
Ag films. Surface enhanced Raman scattering in rough metallic films could also
be due to the excitation of such plasmon polaritons in the grain boundaries or

Competing Ordered Phases in URu2Si2: Hydrostatic Pressure and Re-substitution
A persistent kink in the pressure dependence of the \hidden order" (HO)
transition temperature of URu2-xRexSi2 is observed at a critical pressure Pc=15
kbar for 0 < x < 0.08. In URu2Si2, the kink at Pc is accompanied by the
destruction of superconductivity; a change in the magnitude of a spin
excitation gap, determined from electrical resistivity measurements; and a
complete gapping of a portion of the Fermi surface (FS), inferred from a change
in scattering and the competition between the HO state and superconductivity
for FS fraction

A view through novel process windows
This mini-review discusses some of the recent work on novel process windows by the Micro Flow Chemistry and Process Technology group at the Eindhoven University of Technology, and their associates. Novel process windows consist of unconventional approaches to boost chemical production, often requiring harsh reaction conditions at short to very short time-scales. These approaches are divided into six routes: the use of high temperatures, high pressures, and high concentrations (or solvent-free), new chemical transformations, explosive conditions, and process simplification and integration. Microstructured reactors, due to their inherent safety, short time-scales, and the high degree of process control, are the means that make such extreme chemistry possible
Health Technology Assessment zur medizinischen Wirksamkeit und Kosten-Effektivität der Phototherapeutischen Keratektomiemit dem Excimerlaser bei rezidivierenden Erosionen, Hornhautdystrophien, Hornhautdegenerationen und oberflächlichen Hornhautnarben
Hintergrund und Fragestellung: Die phototherapeutische Keratektomie mit dem Excimer-Laser (PTK) wird bei rezidivierenden Hornhauterosionen, oberflächlichen Hornhautdystrophien, zentralen Hornhautdegenerationen, oberflächlichen Hornhautnarben und -irregularitäten mittlerweile weit verbreitet als Therapie eingesetzt. Beim Großteil der Indikationen gibt es nach Ausschöpfung konservativer Maßnahmen, abgesehen von der Hornhautstichelung bei rezidivierenden Erosionen und der Keratoplastik bei Hornhautdystrophien und Hornhautnarben, keine therapeutischen Alternativen. Bisher wurde die PTK bei diesen Indikationen noch nicht in den Leistungskatalog der GKV aufgenommen. Der vorliegende HTA-Bericht sollte die wissenschaftliche Evidenz zusammentragen, inwiefern der medizinischen Nutzen, die medizinischen Notwendigkeit und die Wirtschaftlichkeit der PTK bei den genannten Indikationen nachgewiesen werden können. --
