    Ab-initio transport theory for digital ferromagnetic heterostructures

    Full text link
    MnAs/GaAs superlattices, made by δ\delta-doping GaAs with Mn, are known as digital ferromagnetic heterostructures. Here we present a theoretical density functional study of the electronic, magnetic and transport properties of such heterostructures. In the absence of intrinsic donors these systems show an half metallic density of states, with an exchange interaction much stronger than that of a random alloy with the same Mn concentration. {\it Ab initio} ballistic transport calculations show that the carriers with energies close to the Fermi energy are strongly confined within a few monolayers around the MnAs plane. This strong confinement is responsible for the large exchange coupling. Therefore the system can be described as a two dimensional half metal with large conductance in the MnAs plane and small conductance in the perpendicular direction

    On-site correlation in valence and core states of ferromagnetic nickel

    Full text link
    We present a method which allows to include narrow-band correlation effects into the description of both valence and core states and we apply it to the prototypical case of nickel. The results of an ab-initio band calculation are used as input mean-field eigenstates for the calculation of self-energy corrections and spectral functions according to a three-body scattering solution of a multi-orbital Hubbard hamiltonian. The calculated quasi-particle spectra show a remarkable agreement with photoemission data in terms of band width, exchange splitting, satellite energy position of valence states, spin polarization of both the main line and the satellite of the 3p core level.Comment: 14 pages, 10 PostScript figures, RevTeX, submitted to PR

    Variable-Range Hopping of Spin Polarons: Magnetoresistance in a Modified Mott Regime

    Full text link
    We analize electrical conductivity controlled by hopping of bound spin polarons in disordered solids with wide distributions of electron energies and polaron shifts (barriers). By means of percolation theory and Monte Carlo simulations we have shown that in such materials at low temperatures, when hopping occurs in the vicinity of the Fermi level, a hard polaron gap does not manifest itself in the transport properties. This happens because as temperature decreases the hopping polaron trades the decreasing electron and polaron barriers for increasing hopping distance. As a result, in the absence of the Coulomb correlation effects, in this variable-range variable-barrier hopping regime, the electrical resistivity as a function of temperature obeys a non-activation law, which differs from the standard Mott law

    This document is the accepted manuscript version of the following article: Shao, Y., Trovati, M., Shi, Q. et al. Soft Comput (2017) 21: 233. The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00500-015-1959-z. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2015.The identification of non-genuine or malicious messages poses a variety of challenges due to the continuous changes in the techniques utilised by cyber-criminals. In this article, we propose a hybrid detection method based on a combination of image and text spam recognition techniques. In particular, the former is based on sparse representation-based classification, which focuses on the global and local image features, and a dictionary learning technique to achieve a spam and a ham sub-dictionary. On the other hand, the textual analysis is based on semantic properties of documents to assess the level of maliciousness. More specifically, we are able to distinguish between meta-spam and real spam. Experimental results show the accuracy and potential of our approach.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

    Studies in the statistical and thermal properties of hadronic matter under some extreme conditions

    Get PDF
    The thermal and statistical properties of hadronic matter under some extreme conditions are investigated using an exactly solvable canonical ensemble model. A unified model describing both the fragmentation of nuclei and the thermal properties of hadronic matter is developed. Simple expressions are obtained for quantities such as the hadronic equation of state, specific heat, compressibility, entropy, and excitation energy as a function of temperature and density. These expressions encompass the fermionic aspect of nucleons, such as degeneracy pressure and Fermi energy at low temperatures and the ideal gas laws at high temperatures and low density. Expressions are developed which connect these two extremes with behavior that resembles an ideal Bose gas with its associated Bose condensation. In the thermodynamic limit, an infinite cluster exists below a certain critical condition in a manner similar to the sudden appearance of the infinite cluster in percolation theory. The importance of multiplicity fluctuations is discussed and some recent data from the EOS collaboration on critical point behavior of nuclei can be accounted for using simple expressions obtained from the model.Comment: 22 pages, revtex, includes 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Measurements of KL Branching Fractions and the CP Violation Parameter |eta+-|

    Full text link
    We present new measurements of the six largest branching fractions of the KL using data collected in 1997 by the KTeV experiment (E832) at Fermilab. The results are B(KL -> pi e nu) = 0.4067 +- 0.0011 B(KL -> pi mu nu) = 0.2701 +- 0.0009 B(KL -> pi+ pi- pi0) = 0.1252 +- 0.0007 B(KL -> pi0 pi0 pi0) = 0.1945 +- 0.0018 B(KL -> pi+ pi-) = (1.975 +- 0.012)E-3, and B(KL -> pi0 pi0) = (0.865 +- 0.010)E-3, where statistical and systematic errors have been summed in quadrature. We also determine the CP violation parameter |eta+-| to be (2.228 +- 0.010)E-3. Several of these results are not in good agreement with averages of previous measurements.Comment: Submitted to Phys.     Effective action and density functional theory

    Get PDF
    The effective action for the charge density and the photon field is proposed as a generalization of the density functional. A simple definition is given for the density functional, as the functional Legendre transform of the generator functional of connected Green functions for the density and the photon field, offering systematic approximation schemes. The leading order of the perturbation expansion reproduces the Hartree-Fock equation. A renormalization group motivated method is introduced to turn on the Coulomb interaction gradually and to find corrections to the Hartree-Fock and the Kohn-Sham schemes.Comment: New references and a numerical algorithm added, to appear in Phys.
