    Overlap properties and adsorption transition of two Hamiltonian paths

    We consider a model of two (fully) compact polymer chains, coupled through an attractive interaction. These compact chains are represented by Hamiltonian paths (HP), and the coupling favors the existence of common bonds between the chains. Using a (n=0n=0 component) spin representation for these paths, we show the existence of a phase transition for strong coupling (i.e. at low temperature) towards a ``frozen'' phase where one chain is completely adsorbed onto the other. By performing a Legendre transform, we obtain the probability distribution of overlaps. The fraction of common bonds between two HP, i.e. their overlap qq, has both lower (qmq_m) and upper (qMq_M) bounds. This means in particuliar that two HP with overlap greater than qMq_M coincide. These results may be of interest in (bio)polymers and in optimization problems.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figure

    A note on the Guerra and Talagrand theorems for Mean Field Spin Glasses: the simple case of spherical models

    The aim of this paper is to discuss the main ideas of the Talagrand proof of the Parisi Ansatz for the free-energy of Mean Field Spin Glasses with a physicist's approach. We consider the case of the spherical pp-spin model, which has the following advantages: 1) the Parisi Ansatz takes the simple ``one step replica symmetry breaking form'', 2) the replica free-energy as a function of the order parameters is simple enough to allow for numerical maximization with arbitrary precision. We present the essential ideas of the proof, we stress its connections with the theory of effective potentials for glassy systems, and we reduce the technically more difficult part of the Talagrand's analysis to an explicit evaluation of the solution of a variational problem.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures.     Fixed-axis polarization states: covariance and comparisons

    Addressing the recent criticisms of Kvinikhidze and Miller, we prove that the spectator wave functions and currents based on ``fixed-axis'' polarization states (previously introduced by us) are Lorentz covariant, and find an explicit connection between them and conventional direction-dependent polarization states.     Quantum cryptography as a retrodiction problem

    We propose a quantum key distribution protocol based on a quantum retrodiction protocol, known as the Mean King problem. The protocol uses a two way quantum channel. We show security against coherent attacks in a transmission error free scenario, even if Eve is allowed to attack both transmissions.     An assessment of the use of antimisting fuel in turbofan engines

    The effects of antimisting kerosene on the performance of the components from the fuel system and the combustor of a JT8D aircraft engine were evaluated. The problems associated with antimisting kerosene were identified and the extent of shearing or degradation required to allow the engine components to achieve satisfactory operation were determined. The performance of the combustor was assessed in a high pressure facility and in an altitude relight/cold ignition facility. The performance of the fuel pump and control system was evaluated in an open loop simulation
