The HgMn Binary Star Phi Herculis: Detection and Properties of the Secondary and Revision of the Elemental Abundances of the Primary
Observations of the Mercury-Manganese star Phi Herculis with the Navy
Prototype Optical Interferometer (NPOI) conclusively reveal the previously
unseen companion in this single-lined binary system. The NPOI data were used to
predict a spectral type of A8V for the secondary star Phi Her B. This
prediction was subsequently confirmed by spectroscopic observations obtained at
the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory. Phi Her B is rotating at 50 +/-3
km/sec, in contrast to the 8 km/sec lines of Phi Her A. Recognizing the lines
from the secondary permits one to separate them from those of the primary. The
abundance analysis of Phi Her A shows an abundance pattern similar to those of
other HgMn stars with Al being very underabundant and Sc, Cr, Mn, Zn, Ga, Sr,
Y, Zr, Ba, Ce, and Hg being very overabundant.Comment: Accepted to ApJ, 45 pages, 11 figure
Three-dimensional CFD simulations with large displacement of the geometries using a connectivity-change moving mesh approach
This paper deals with three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulations involving 3D moving geometries with large displacements on unstructured meshes. Such simulations are of great value to industry, but remain very time-consuming. A robust moving mesh algorithm coupling an elasticity-like mesh deformation solution and mesh optimizations was proposed in previous works, which removes the need for global remeshing when performing large displacements. The optimizations, and in particular generalized edge/face swapping, preserve the initial quality of the mesh throughout the simulation. We propose to integrate an Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian compressible flow solver into this process to demonstrate its capabilities in a full CFD computation context. This solver relies on a local enforcement of the discrete geometric conservation law to preserve the order of accuracy of the time integration. The displacement of the geometries is either imposed, or driven by fluid–structure interaction (FSI). In the latter case, the six degrees of freedom approach for rigid bodies is considered. Finally, several 3D imposed-motion and FSI examples are given to validate the proposed approach, both in academic and industrial configurations
STUDENTS' PERCEPTIONS OF THE INCIDENCE OF BURN-OUT AMONG THEIR TEACHERS
research paperThe aim was to explore students' perceptions of teacher burn-out in relation to the incidence of disruptive student classroom behaviour and teachers' competence to cope with it. A random sample of students from a Regional Training Centre participated. First, it was shown that the Maslach Burnout Inventory, the Coping with Disruptive Behaviour Scale and the Perceived Disruptive Behaviour Scale could be adapted for students to report symptoms of burn-out perceived among their teachers, the occurrence of perceived disruptive student behaviour and the students' perception of their teachers' ability to cope with such behaviour. Second, students' perceptions do not differ according to their age. Third, a significant difference was found between the perceptions of male and female students in respect of emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation, but not in respect of personal achievement. Finally, a considerable percentage of variance on each of the three burn-out dimensions is explained by teachers' ability to cope with student disruptive behaviour and perceived disruptive student behaviour. Students' perceptions of their teachers appear to contribute valid information on the mental health of the latter. It is advisable for future research into teacher burn-out to be based both on the teachers' self-reports and on the students' reports
Catalog of Galactic Beta Cephei Stars
We present an extensive and up-to-date catalog of Galactic Beta Cephei stars.
This catalog is intended to give a comprehensive overview of observational
characteristics of all known Beta Cephei stars. 93 stars could be confirmed to
be Beta Cephei stars. For some stars we re-analyzed published data or conducted
our own analyses. 61 stars were rejected from the final Beta Cephei list, and
77 stars are suspected to be Beta Cephei stars. A list of critically selected
pulsation frequencies for confirmed Beta Cephei stars is also presented. We
analyze the Beta Cephei stars as a group, such as the distributions of their
spectral types, projected rotational velocities, radial velocities, pulsation
periods, and Galactic coordinates. We confirm that the majority of these stars
are multiperiodic pulsators. We show that, besides two exceptions, the Beta
Cephei stars with high pulsation amplitudes are slow rotators. We construct a
theoretical HR diagram that suggests that almost all 93 Beta Cephei stars are
MS objects. We discuss the observational boundaries of Beta Cephei pulsation
and their physical parameters. We corroborate that the excited pulsation modes
are near to the radial fundamental mode in frequency and we show that the mass
distribution of the stars peaks at 12 solar masses. We point out that the
theoretical instability strip of the Beta Cephei stars is filled neither at the
cool nor at the hot end and attempt to explain this observation

Stylized facts of intraday precious metals
This paper examines the stylized facts, correlation and interaction between volatility and returns at the 5-minute frequency for gold, silver, platinum and palladium from May 2000 to April 2015. We study the full sample period, as well as three subsamples to determine how high-frequency data of precious metals have developed over time. We find that over the full sample, the number of trades has increased substantially over time for each precious metal, while the bid-ask spread has narrowed over time, indicating an increase in liquidity and price efficiency. We also find strong evidence of periodicity in returns, volatility, volume and bid- ask spread. Returns and volume both experience strong intraday periodicity linked to the opening and closing of major markets around the world while the bid-ask spread is at its low- est when European markets are open. We also show a bilateral Granger causality between returns and volatility of each precious metal, which holds for the vast majority subsamples
Three-dimensional lanthanide-organic frameworks based on di-, tetra-, and hexameric clusters
Three-dimensional lanthanide-organic frameworks formulated as (CH3)2NH2[Ln(pydc)2] · 1/2H2O [Ln3+ ) Eu3+ (1a)
or Er3+ (1b); pydc2- corresponds to the diprotonated residue of 2,5-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (H2pydc)], [Er4(OH)4(pydc)4(H2O)3] ·H2O
(2), and [PrIII
2PrIV
1.25O(OH)3(pydc)3] (3) have been isolated from typical solvothermal (1a and 1b in N,N-dimethylformamide -
DMF) and hydrothermal (2 and 3) syntheses. Materials were characterized in the solid state using single-crystal X-ray diffraction,
thermogravimetric analysis, vibrational spectroscopy (FT-IR and FT-Raman), electron microscopy, and CHN elemental analysis.
While synthesis in DMF promotes the formation of centrosymmetric dimeric units, which act as building blocks in the construction
of anionic ∞
3{[Ln(pydc)2]-} frameworks having the channels filled by the charge-balancing (CH3)2NH2
+ cations generated in situ by
the solvolysis of DMF, the use of water as the solvent medium promotes clustering of the lanthanide centers: structures of 2 and 3
contain instead tetrameric [Er4(μ3-OH)4]8+ and hexameric |Pr6(μ3-O)2(μ3-OH)6| clusters which act as the building blocks of the networks,
and are bridged by the H2-xpydcx- residues. It is demonstrated that this modular approach is reflected in the topological nature of
the materials inducing 4-, 8-, and 14-connected uninodal networks (the nodes being the centers of gravity of the clusters) with
topologies identical to those of diamond (family 1), and framework types bct (for 2) and bcu-x (for 3), respectively. The
thermogravimetric studies of compound 3 further reveal a significant weight increase between ambient temperature and 450 °C with
this being correlated with the uptake of oxygen from the surrounding environment by the praseodymium oxide inorganic core
