    Asymptotics for penalized additive B-spline regression

    This paper is concerned with asymptotic theory for penalized spline estimator in bivariate additive model. The focus of this paper is put upon the penalized spline estimator obtained by the backfitting algorithm. The convergence of the algorithm as well as the uniqueness of its solution are shown. The asymptotic bias and variance of penalized spline estimator are derived by an efficient use of the asymptotic results for the penalized spline estimator in marginal univariate model. Asymptotic normality of estimator is also developed, by which an approximate confidence interval can be obtained. Some numerical experiments confirming theoretical results are provided.Comment: 24 pages, 6 figure

    Computation accuracies of boundary element method and finite element method in transient eddy current analysis

    The computation accuracies of the boundary-element method (BEM) and finite-element method (FEM) in transient eddy-current problems are compared by using a slot-embedded conductor model and a diffusion model that can be solved theoretically.     Impedance Analysis of Bunch Length Measurements at the ATF Damping Ring

    We present energy spread and bunch length measurements at the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) at KEK, as functions of current, for different ring rf voltages, and with the beam both on and off the coupling resonance. We fit the on-coupling bunch shapes to those of an impedance model consisting of a resistor and an inductor connected in series.     Phase control of La2CuO4 in thin-film synthesis

    The lanthanum copper oxide, La2CuO4, which is an end member of the prototype high-Tc superconductors (La,Sr)2CuO4 and (La,Ba)2CuO4, crystallizes in the "K2NiF4" structure in high-temperature bulk synthesis. The crystal chemistry, however, predicts that La2CuO4 is at the borderline of the K2NiF4 stability and that it can crystallize in the Nd2CuO4 structure at low synthesis temperatures. In this article we demonstrate that low-temperature thin-film synthesis actually crystallizes La2CuO4 in the Nd2CuO4 structure. We also show that the phase control of "K2NiF4"-type La2CuO4 versus "Nd2CuO4"-type La2CuO4 can be achieved by varying the synthesis temperature and using different substrates.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PRB, revte

    Intrabeam Scattering Analysis of ATF Beam Measurements

    At the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) at KEK intrabeam scattering (IBS) is a strong effect for an electron machine. It is an effect that couples all dimensions of the beam, and in April 2000, over a short period of time, all dimensions were measured as functions of current. In this report we derive a simple relation for the growth rates of emittances due to IBS. We apply the theories of Bjorken-Mtingwa, Piwinski, and a formula due to Raubenheimer to the ATF parameters, and find that the results all agree (if in Piwinski's formalism we replace the dispersion squared over beta by the dispersion invariant). Finally, we compare theory, including the effect of potential well bunch lengthening, with the April 2000 measurements, and find reasonably good agreement in the energy spread and horizontal emittance dependence on current. The vertical emittance measurement, however, implies that either: there is error in the measurement (equivalent to an introduction of 0.6% x-y coupling error), or the effect of intrabeam scattering is stronger than predicted (35% stronger in growth rates).Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, Presented at IEEE Particle Accelerator Conferenc
