    Efimov physics beyond three particles

    Efimov physics originally refers to a system of three particles. Here we review recent theoretical progress seeking for manifestations of Efimov physics in systems composed of more than three particles. Clusters of more than three bosons are tied to each Efimov trimer, but no independent Efimov physics exists there beyond three bosons. The case of a few heavy fermions interacting with a lighter atom is also considered, where the mass ratio of the constituent particles plays a significant role. Following Efimov's study of the (2+1) system, the (3+1) system was shown to have its own critical mass ratio to become Efimovian. We show that the (4+1) system becomes Efimovian at a mass ratio which is smaller than its sub-systems thresholds, giving a pure five-body Efimov effect. The (5+1) and (6+1) systems are also discussed, and we show the absence of 6- and 7-body Efimov physics there

    Quantum magnetism and criticality

    Magnetic insulators have proved to be fertile ground for studying new types of quantum many body states, and I survey recent experimental and theoretical examples. The insights and methods transfer also to novel superconducting and metallic states. Of particular interest are critical quantum states, sometimes found at quantum phase transitions, which have gapless excitations with no particle- or wave-like interpretation, and control a significant portion of the finite temperature phase diagram.     Perovskite solar cells: a deep analysis using current–voltage and capacitance–voltage techniques

    Perovskite solar cells exhibiting~14–15% efficiency were experimentally measured using current–voltage (I–V) and capacitance–voltage (C–V) techniques in order to extract material and device properties, and understand the action of photovoltaic (PV) operation. Deep analyses were carried out on dark- and illuminated I–V curves, and dark C–V curves. Results were compared with those of graded bandgap solar cells fabricated on inorganic n-type window layers. These analyses according to a physicist’s point of view lead to understand the perovskite solar cell as a graded bandgap solar cell built on a p-type window layer. I–V and C–V results show very similar behaviour and the principle of PV action is identical. Once the stability issues with perovskites are solved, these devices have very high potential of producing next generation solar cells reaching at least mid-20% efficiency values

    North Ecliptic Pole merging galaxy catalogue

    Aims. We aim to generate a catalogue of merging galaxies within the 5.4 sq. deg. North Ecliptic Pole over the redshift range 0.0 \u3c z \u3c 0.3. To do this, imaging data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam are used along with morphological parameters derived from these same data. Methods. The catalogue was generated using a hybrid approach. Two neural networks were trained to perform binary merger non-merger classifications: one for galaxies with z \u3c 0.15 and another for 0.15 ≤ z \u3c 0.30. Each network used the image and morphological parameters of a galaxy as input. The galaxies that were identified as merger candidates by the network were then visually checked by experts. The resulting mergers will be used to calculate the merger fraction as a function of redshift and compared with literature results. Results. We found that 86.3% of galaxy mergers at z \u3c 0.15 and 79.0% of mergers at 0.15 ≤ z \u3c 0.30 are expected to be correctly identified by the networks. Of the 34 264 galaxies classified by the neural networks, 10 195 were found to be merger candidates. Of these, 2109 were visually identified to be merging galaxies. We find that the merger fraction increases with redshift, consistent with literature results from observations and simulations, and that there is a mild star-formation rate enhancement in the merger population of a factor of 1.102 ± 0.084

    Privatization and State Capacity in Postcommunist Society

    Economists have used cross-national regression analysis to argue that postcommunist economic failure is the result of inadequate adherence liberal economic policies. Sociologists have relied on case study data to show that postcommunist economic failure is the outcome of too close adherence to liberal policy recommendations, which has led to an erosion of state effectiveness, and thus produced poor economic performance. The present paper advances a version of this statist theory based on a quantitative analysis of mass privatization programs in the postcommunist world. We argue that rapid large-scale privatization creates severe supply and demand shocks for enterprises, thereby inducing firm failure. The resulting erosion of tax revenues leads to a fiscal crisis for the state, and severely weakens its capacity and bureaucratic character. This, in turn, reacts back on the enterprise sector, as the state can no longer support the institutions necessary for the effective functioning of a modern economy, thus resulting in deindustrialization. Using cross-national regression techniques we find that the implementation of mass privatization programs negatively impacts measures of economic growth, state capacity and the security of property rights.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/40192/3/wp806.pd

    Paradoxical regulation of Bcl-2 family proteins by 17β-oestradiol in human breast cancer cells MCF-7

    Tumorigenesis is related to the dysregulation of cell growth or cell death pathways. Hence, elucidation of the mechanisms involved in the modulation of pro- or anti-apoptotic proteins is important in furthering understanding of breast cancer aetiology and may aid in designing prevention and treatment strategies. In the present study, we examined the role of 17β-oestradiol on the regulation of apoptosis in the breast cancer cell line MCF-7. Using multi-probe RNAase protection assays, we found changes in the mRNA levels of several Bcl-2 family proteins upon treatment of MCF-7 cells with 17β-oestradiol. Unexpectedly, we found a paradoxical effects of 17β-oestradiol on two anti-apoptotic proteins Bcl-2 and Bcl-x. Treatment with 17β-oestradiol resulted in up-regulation of Bcl-2 mRNA and protein, but down-regulated Bcl-x(L) mRNA and protein. The effect of 17β-oestradiol on Bcl-x(L) occurred at concentration-dependent fashion. The effect was specific to 17β-oestradiol since other steroid hormones exert no effect on Bcl-x(L). Tamoxifen, an anti-oestrogen, blocked the down-regulation of Bcl-x(L) by 17β-oestradiol demonstrating this effect is oestrogen receptor-dependent. We speculate that different members of the Bcl-2 family proteins may be regulated through different pathway and these pathways may be modulated by 17β-oestradiol. © 1999 Cancer Research Campaig

    Multiple Histone Methyl and Acetyltransferase Complex Components Bind the HLA-DRA Gene

    Major histocompatibility complex class II (MHC-II) genes are fundamental components that contribute to adaptive immune responses. While characterization of the chromatin features at the core promoter region of these genes has been studied, the scope of histone modifications and the modifying factors responsible for activation of these genes are less well defined. Using the MHC-II gene HLA-DRA as a model, the extent and distribution of major histone modifications associated with active expression were defined in interferon-γ induced epithelial cells, B cells, and B-cell mutants for MHC-II expression. With active transcription, nucleosome density around the proximal regulatory region was diminished and histone acetylation and methylation modifications were distributed throughout the gene in distinct patterns that were dependent on the modification examined. Irrespective of the location, the majority of these modifications were dependent on the binding of either the X-box binding factor RFX or the class II transactivator (CIITA) to the proximal regulatory region. Importantly, once established, the modifications were stable through multiple cell divisions after the activating stimulus was removed, suggesting that activation of this system resulted in an epigenetic state. A dual crosslinking chromatin immunoprecipitation method was used to detect histone modifying protein components that interacted across the gene. Components of the MLL methyltransferase and GCN5 acetyltransferase complexes were identified. Some MLL complex components were found to be CIITA independent, including MLL1, ASH2L and RbBP5. Likewise, GCN5 containing acetyltransferase complex components belonging to the ATAC and STAGA complexes were also identified. These results suggest that multiple complexes are either used or are assembled as the gene is activated for expression. Together the results define and illustrate a complex network of histone modifying proteins and multisubunit complexes participating in MHC-II transcription
