    Correction induced by irrelevant operators in the correlators of the 2d Ising model in a magnetic field

    We investigate the presence of irrelevant operators in the 2d Ising model perturbed by a magnetic field, by studying the corrections induced by these operators in the spin-spin correlator of the model. To this end we perform a set of high precision simulations for the correlator both along the axes and along the diagonal of the lattice. By comparing the numerical results with the predictions of a perturbative expansion around the critical point we find unambiguous evidences of the presence of such irrelevant operators. It turns out that among the irrelevant operators the one which gives the largest correction is the spin 4 operator T^2 + \bar T^2 which accounts for the breaking of the rotational invariance due to the lattice. This result agrees with what was already known for the correlator evaluated exactly at the critical point and also with recent results obtained in the case of the thermal perturbation of the model.Comment: 28 pages, no figure

    Renormalization Group calculations with k|| dependent couplings in a ladder

    We calculate the phase diagram of a ladder system, with a Hubbard interaction and an interchain coupling t⊄t_\perp. We use a Renormalization Group method, in a one loop expansion, introducing an original method to include k∣∣k_{||} dependence of couplings. We also classify the order parameters corresponding to ladder instabilities. We obtain different results, depending on whether we include k∣∣k_{||} dependence or not. When we do so, we observe a region with large antiferromagnetic fluctuations, in the vicinity of small t⊄t_\perp, followed by a superconducting region with a simultaneous divergence of the Spin Density Waves channel. We also investigate the effect of a non local backward interchain scattering : we observe, on one hand, the suppression of singlet superconductivity and of Spin Density Waves, and, on the other hand, the increase of Charge Density Waves and, for some values of t⊄t_\perp, of triplet superconductivity. Our results eventually show that k∣∣k_{||} is an influential variable in the Renormalization Group flow, for this kind of systems.Comment: 20 pages, 19 figures, accepted in Phys. Rev. B 71 v. 2

    Optimization of an Alkylpolyglucoside-Based Dishwashing Detergent Formulation.

    The aim of this work was to formulate and optimize the washing performance of an alkylpolyglucoside-based dishwashing detergent. The liquid detergent was formulated with five ingredients of commercial origin: anionic (linear sodium alkylbenzenesulfonate and sodium laurylethersulfate), nonionic (C12–C14 alkylpolyglucoside) and zwitterionic (a fatty acid amide derivative with a betaine structure) surfactants, and NaCl for viscosity control. In addition to the plate test, other properties were investigated including ‘‘cloud point’’, viscosity, and emulsion stability. Statistical analysis software was used to generate a central composite experimental design. Then, a second order design and analysis of experiments approach, known as the Response Surface Methodology, was set up to investigate the effects of the five components of the formulation on the studied properties in the region covering plausible component ranges. The method proved to be efficient for locating the domains of concentrations where the desired properties were met

    Exact Finite-Size-Scaling Corrections to the Critical Two-Dimensional Ising Model on a Torus

    We analyze the finite-size corrections to the energy and specific heat of the critical two-dimensional spin-1/2 Ising model on a torus. We extend the analysis of Ferdinand and Fisher to compute the correction of order L^{-3} to the energy and the corrections of order L^{-2} and L^{-3} to the specific heat. We also obtain general results on the form of the finite-size corrections to these quantities: only integer powers of L^{-1} occur, unmodified by logarithms (except of course for the leading log⁥L\log L term in the specific heat); and the energy expansion contains only odd powers of L^{-1}. In the specific-heat expansion any power of L^{-1} can appear, but the coefficients of the odd powers are proportional to the corresponding coefficients of the energy expansion.Comment: 26 pages (LaTeX).     Square lattice Ising model susceptibility: Series expansion method and differential equation for χ(3)\chi^{(3)}

    In a previous paper (J. Phys. A {\bf 37} (2004) 9651-9668) we have given the Fuchsian linear differential equation satisfied by χ(3)\chi^{(3)}, the ``three-particle'' contribution to the susceptibility of the isotropic square lattice Ising model. This paper gives the details of the calculations (with some useful tricks and tools) allowing one to obtain long series in polynomial time. The method is based on series expansion in the variables that appear in the (n−1)(n-1)-dimensional integrals representing the nn-particle contribution to the isotropic square lattice Ising model susceptibility χ\chi . The integration rules are straightforward due to remarkable formulas we derived for these variables. We obtain without any numerical approximation χ(3)\chi^{(3)} as a fully integrated series in the variable w=s/2/(1+s2)w=s/2/(1+s^{2}), where s=sh(2K) s =sh (2K), with K=J/kTK=J/kT the conventional Ising model coupling constant.     Pregnant women with bronchial asthma benefit from progressive muscle relaxation: A randomized, prospective, controlled trial

    Background: Asthma is a serious medical problem in pregnancy and is often associated with stress, anger and poor quality of life. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) on change in blood pressure, lung parameters, heart rate, anger and health-related quality of life in pregnant women with bronchial asthma. Methods: We treated a sample of 64 pregnant women with bronchial asthma from the local population in an 8-week randomized, prospective, controlled trial. Thirty-two were selected for PMR, and 32 received a placebo intervention. The systolic blood pressure, forced expiratory volume in the first second, peak expiratory flow and heart rate were tested, and the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory and Health Survey (SF-36) were employed. Results: According to the intend-to-treat principle, a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure and a significant increase in both forced expiratory volume in the first second and peak expiratory flow were observed after PMR. The heart rate showed a significant increase in the coefficient of variation, root mean square of successive differences and high frequency ranges, in addition to a significant reduction in low and middle frequency ranges. A significant reduction on three of five State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory scales, and a significant increase on seven of eight SF-36 scales were observed. Conclusions: PMR appears to be an effective method to improve blood pressure, lung parameters and heart rate, and to decrease anger levels, thus enhancing health-related quality of life in pregnant women with bronchial asthma.     Phonons in random alloys: the itinerant coherent-potential approximation

    We present the itinerant coherent-potential approximation(ICPA), an analytic, translationally invariant and tractable form of augmented-space-based, multiple-scattering theory in a single-site approximation for harmonic phonons in realistic random binary alloys with mass and force-constant disorder. We provide expressions for quantities needed for comparison with experimental structure factors such as partial and average spectral functions and derive the sum rules associated with them. Numerical results are presented for Ni_{55} Pd_{45} and Ni_{50} Pt_{50} alloys which serve as test cases, the former for weak force-constant disorder and the latter for strong. We present results on dispersion curves and disorder-induced widths. Direct comparisons with the single-site coherent potential approximation(CPA) and experiment are made which provide insight into the physics of force-constant changes in random alloys. The CPA accounts well for the weak force-constant disorder case but fails for strong force-constant disorder where the ICPA succeeds.Comment: 19 pages, 12 eps figures, uses RevTex
