Succinct Indexable Dictionaries with Applications to Encoding -ary Trees, Prefix Sums and Multisets
We consider the {\it indexable dictionary} problem, which consists of storing
a set for some integer , while supporting the
operations of \Rank(x), which returns the number of elements in that are
less than if , and -1 otherwise; and \Select(i) which returns
the -th smallest element in . We give a data structure that supports both
operations in O(1) time on the RAM model and requires bits to store a set of size , where {\cal B}(n,m) = \ceil{\lg
{m \choose n}} is the minimum number of bits required to store any -element
subset from a universe of size . Previous dictionaries taking this space
only supported (yes/no) membership queries in O(1) time. In the cell probe
model we can remove the additive term in the space bound,
answering a question raised by Fich and Miltersen, and Pagh.
We present extensions and applications of our indexable dictionary data
structure, including:
An information-theoretically optimal representation of a -ary cardinal
tree that supports standard operations in constant time,
A representation of a multiset of size from in bits that supports (appropriate generalizations of) \Rank
and \Select operations in constant time, and
A representation of a sequence of non-negative integers summing up to
in bits that supports prefix sum queries in constant

Tropical rainforest bird community structure in relation to altitude, tree species composition, and null models in the Western Ghats, India
Studies of species distributions on elevational gradients are essential to
understand principles of community organisation as well as to conserve species
in montane regions. This study examined the patterns of species richness,
abundance, composition, range sizes, and distribution of rainforest birds at 14
sites along an elevational gradient (500-1400 m) in the Kalakad-Mundanthurai
Tiger Reserve (KMTR) of the Western Ghats, India. In contrast to theoretical
expectation, resident bird species richness did not change significantly with
elevation although the species composition changed substantially (<10%
similarity) between the lowest and highest elevation sites. Constancy in
species richness was possibly due to relative constancy in productivity and
lack of elevational trends in vegetation structure. Elevational range size of
birds, expected to increase with elevation according to Rapoport's rule, was
found to show a contrasting inverse U-shaped pattern because species with
narrow elevational distributions, including endemics, occurred at both ends of
the gradient (below 800 m and above 1,200 m). Bird species composition also did
not vary randomly along the gradient as assessed using a hierarchy of null
models of community assembly, from completely unconstrained models to ones with
species richness and range-size distribution restrictions. Instead, bird
community composition was significantly correlated with elevation and tree
species composition of sites, indicating the influence of deterministic factors
on bird community structure. Conservation of low- and high-elevation areas and
maintenance of tree species composition against habitat alteration are
important for bird conservation in the southern Western Ghats rainforests.Comment: 36 pages, 5 figures, two tables (including one in the appendix)

The eigenspectra of Indian musical drums
In a family of drums used in the Indian subcontinent, the circular drum head
is made of material of non-uniform density. Remarkably, and in contrast to a
circular membrane of uniform density, the low eigenmodes of the non-uniform
membrane are harmonic. In this work we model the drum head by a non-uniform
membrane whose density varies smoothly between two prescribed values. Using a
Fourier-Chebyshev spectral collocation method we obtain the eigenmodes and
eigenvalues of the drum head. For a suitable choice of parameters, which we
find by optimising a cost function, the eigenspectra obtained from our model
are in excellent agreement with experimental values. Our model and the
numerical method should find application in numerical sound synthesis

Mergers and acquisitions performance is akin to financial perplex that researchers have been trying to solve. The objective of the study is to examine the reaction of shareholders to the announcement of mergers and acquisitions in the pre-event, around the event and during the post-event period of the Indian manufacturing firms. The event study research methodology has been used for analysis along with parametric and non-parametric tests. The study shows that investors can earn a significant return if they purchase shares of the acquiring company one day before and sell them one day after the announcement day. The findings concluded that while the announcement of a merger or acquisition generates a positive reaction, this reaction is only temporary and is swiftly diluted. This shows that investors initially overreacted to these announcements and took immediate corrective action. The study recommends to investors, “Earlier the shareholders sell, more the shareholders gains”.Эффективность слияний и поглощений сродни финансовой загадке, которую пытаются разрешить исследователи.Цель исследования — изучить реакцию акционеров на объявление о слияниях и поглощениях в преддверии события, во время него и после события в индийских компаниях обрабатывающей промышленности.Для анализа использовался метод событийного анализа, а также параметрические и непараметрические тесты. Исследование показало, что инвесторы могут получить значительную прибыль, если купят акции поглощающей компании за день до и продадут их через день после дня объявления о слиянии или поглощении.Результаты исследования позволили сделать вывод: хотя объявление о слиянии или поглощении вызывает положительную реакцию, она носит временный характер и быстро ослабевает. Это свидетельствует о том, что инвесторы изначально слишком остро отреагировали на эти объявления и немедленно предприняли меры по исправлению положения. Авторы рекомендуют инвесторам: «Чем раньше акционеры продают, тем больше выигрывают»
Co-refolding denatured-reduced hen egg white lysozyme with acidic and basic proteins
Refolding of denatured-reduced lysozyme and the effect of co-refolding it with other proteins such as RNase A, bovine serum albumin, histone, myelin basic protein, alcohol dehydrogenase and DNase I on the renaturation yield and the aggregation of lysozyme have been studied. Basic proteins consistently increase the renaturation yield of the basic protein lysozyme (10–20% more than in their absence) with little or no aggregation. On the other hand, co-refolding of lysozyme with acidic proteins leads to aggregation and a significant decrease in renaturation yields. Our results show that hetero-interchain interactions (non-specific interactions) occur when the basic protein lysozyme is refolded together with acidic proteins such as bovine serum albumin, alcohol dehydrogenase or DNase I. Our results also suggest that the net charge on proteins plays a significant role in such non-specific aggregation. These results should prove useful in understanding the hetero-interchain interactions between folding polypeptide chains
Caprellids (Crustacea: Amphipoda) from India
The caprellid fauna of India is investigated. A
total of 538 samples (including algae, seagrasses, sponges,
hydroids, ascidians, bryozoans, encrusted dead corals, coral
rubble, fine and coarse sediments) were collected from 39
stations along the coast of India, covering a wide diversity
of habitats from intertidal to 12 m water depth. A new
species (Jigurru longimanus n.sp.) is described, and figures
of the 11 valid species reported so far from India are given
together with a key for their identification. No caprellids
were found in sediments from the northeast (16–208N)
coast of India while they were abundant in the southeast
and west coast. Decreases in salinity due to river discharges
associated with lower values of oxygen, higher water
temperatures and lower nutrient inputs along the east coast
could explain these differences in caprellid composition
between the two coastlines. Significantly, lower abundance
of caprellids in India, as in other tropical ecosystems, is
probably related to the lack of species belonging to the
genus Caprella, which reach very high abundances in

Quantum thermodynamics at critical points during melting and solidification processes
We systematically explore and show the existence of finite-temperature
continuous quantum phase transition (CTQPT) at a critical point, namely, during
solidification or melting such that the first-order thermal phase transition is
a special case within CTQPT. Infact, CTQPT is related to chemical reaction
where quantum fluctuation (due to wavefunction transformation) is caused by
thermal energy and it can occur maximally for temperatures much higher than
zero Kelvin. To extract the quantity related to CTQPT, we use the ionization
energy theory and the energy-level spacing renormalization group method to
derive the energy-level spacing entropy, renormalized Bose-Einstein
distribution and the time-dependent specific heat capacity. This work
unambiguously shows that the quantum phase transition applies for any finite

Redox-regulated chaperone function and conformational changes of Escherichia coli Hsp33
We have studied the chaperone activity and conformation of Escherichia coli heat shock protein (Hsp)33, whose activity is known to be switched on by oxidative conditions. While oxidized Hsp33 completely prevents the heat-induced aggregation of ζ-crystallin at 42°C at a ratio of 1:1 (w/w), the reduced form exhibits only a marginal effect on the aggregation. Far UV–circular dichroism (CD) spectra show that reduced Hsp33 contains a significant α-helical component. Oxidation results in significant changes in the far UV–CD spectrum. Near UV–CD spectra show changes in tertiary structural packing upon oxidation. Polarity-sensitive fluorescent probes report enhanced hydrophobic surfaces in the oxidized Hsp33. Our studies show that the oxidative activation of the chaperone function of Hsp33 involves observable conformational changes accompanying increased exposure of hydrophobic pockets
Selection from read-only memory with limited workspace
Given an unordered array of elements drawn from a totally ordered set and
an integer in the range from to , in the classic selection problem
the task is to find the -th smallest element in the array. We study the
complexity of this problem in the space-restricted random-access model: The
input array is stored on read-only memory, and the algorithm has access to a
limited amount of workspace. We prove that the linear-time prune-and-search
algorithm---presented in most textbooks on algorithms---can be modified to use
bits instead of words of extra space. Prior to our
work, the best known algorithm by Frederickson could perform the task with
bits of extra space in time. Our result separates
the space-restricted random-access model and the multi-pass streaming model,
since we can surpass the lower bound known for the latter
model. We also generalize our algorithm for the case when the size of the
workspace is bits, where . The running time
of our generalized algorithm is ,
slightly improving over the
bound of Frederickson's algorithm. To obtain the improvements mentioned above,
we developed a new data structure, called the wavelet stack, that we use for
repeated pruning. We expect the wavelet stack to be a useful tool in other
