    Fluctuations of a driven membrane in an electrolyte

    We develop a model for a driven cell- or artificial membrane in an electrolyte. The system is kept far from equilibrium by the application of a DC electric field or by concentration gradients, which causes ions to flow through specific ion-conducting units (representing pumps, channels or natural pores). We consider the case of planar geometry and Debye-H\"{u}ckel regime, and obtain the membrane equation of motion within Stokes hydrodynamics. At steady state, the applied field causes an accumulation of charges close to the membrane, which, similarly to the equilibrium case, can be described with renormalized membrane tension and bending modulus. However, as opposed to the equilibrium situation, we find new terms in the membrane equation of motion, which arise specifically in the out-of-equilibrium case.     We present a simple description on the electrophoretic dynamics of polyelectrolytes going through designed channels with narrow constrictions of slit geometry. By analyzing rheological behaviours of the stuck chain, which is coupled to the effect of solvent flow, three critical electric fields (permeation field E(per)N1E^{(per)} \sim N^{-1}, deformation field E(def)N3/5E^{(def)} \sim N^{-3/5} and injection field E(inj)N0E^{(inj)} \simeq N^0, with NN polymerization index) are clarified. Between E(per)E^{(per)} and E(inj)E^{(inj)}, the chain migration is dictated by the driven activation process. In particular, at E>E(def)E>E^{(def)}, the stuck chain at the slit entrance is strongly deformed, which enhances the rate of the permeation. From these observations, electrophoretic mobility at a given electric field is deduced, which shows non-monotonic dependence on NN. For long enough chains, mobility increases with NN, in good agreement with experiments. An abrupt change in the electrophoretic flow at a threshold electric field is formally regarded as a nonequilibrium phase transition.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure

    Charge Fluctuations on Membrane Surfaces in Water

    We generalize the predictions for attractions between over-all neutral surfaces induced by charge fluctuations/correlations to non-uniform systems that include dielectric discontinuities, as is the case for mixed charged lipid membranes in an aqueous solution. We show that the induced interactions depend in a non-trivial way on the dielectric constants of membrane and water and show different scaling with distance depending on these properties. The generality of the calculations also allows us to predict under which dielectric conditions the interaction will change sign and become repulsive

    Modern therapy for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is based on knowledge of the severity of the natural history of the disease. RA patients are approached with early and aggressive treatment strategies, methotrexate as an anchor drug, biological targeted therapies in those with inadequate response to methotrexate, and “tight control,” aiming for remission and low disease activity according to quantitative monitoring. This chapter presents a rationale for current treatment strategies for RA with antirheumatic drugs, a review of published reports concerning treatments in clinical cohorts outside of clinical trials, and current treatments at 61 sites in 21 countries in the QUEST-RA database

    Analysis of electroencephalograms in Alzheimer's disease patients with multiscale entropy

    The aim of this study was to analyse the electroencephalogram (EEG) background activity of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients using the Multiscale Entropy (MSE). The MSE is a recently developed method that quantifies the regularity of a signal on different time scales. These time scales are inspected by means of several coarse-grained sequences formed from the analysed signals. We recorded the EEGs from 19 scalp electrodes in 11 AD patients and 11 age-matched controls and estimated the MSE profile for each epoch of the EEG recordings. The shape of the MSE profiles reveals the EEG complexity, and it suggests that the EEG contains information in deeper scales than the smallest one. Moreover, the results showed that the EEG background activity is less complex in AD patients than control subjects. We found significant difference
