    Groningen Seaports heeft de ambitie om de Eemshaven te ontwikkelen tot een belangrijk energiecentrum onder de naam "Energy Park Eemshaven". Bovendien worden de Eemshaven en de vaargeul naar de Noordzee verruimd en verdiept. Er komen drie soorten zeezoogdieren in het gebied voor. De meest algemene soort is de gewone zeehond, Phoca vitulina; ook worden er grijze zeehonden Halichoerus grypus en bruinvissen Phocoena phocoena in het gebied gezien. In Brasseur (2007) worden leemtes in de beschikbare kennis van de grijze zeehond en de bruinvis geconstateerd, en tevens over de winterverspreiding van de gewone zeehond. Aangezien de ontbrekende kennis noodzakelijk is om te komen tot een gedegen afweging van de mogelijke effecten van de geplande activiteiten wordt verder onderzoek aanbevolen naar: A. De ruimtelijke en temporele spreiding van de drie soorten in het gebied; B. Migratiegedrag van de drie soorten; C. Voor de zeezoogdieren frequentiespecifieke geluidscontouren van de bouwactiviteiten – met en zonder mitigatie

    Microcirculatory perfusion is preserved during off-pump but not on-pump cardiac surgery

    OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the perioperative course of microcirculatory perfusion in off-pump compared with on-pump surgery. Additionally, the impact of changes in systemic hemodynamics, hematocrit, and body temperature was studied. DESIGN: Prospective, nonrandomized, observational study. SETTING: Tertiary university hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting with (n = 13) or without (n = 13) use of cardiopulmonary bypass. INTERVENTIONS: Microcirculatory measurements were obtained at 5 time points ranging from induction of anesthesia to ICU admission. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Microcirculatory recordings were performed with sublingual sidestream dark field imaging. Despite a comparable reduction in intraoperative blood pressure between groups, the perfused vessel density decreased more than 20% after onset of extracorporeal circulation but remained stable in the off-pump group. The reduction in microvascular perfusion in the on-pump group was further paralleled by decreased hematocrit and temperature. Although postbypass hematocrit levels and body temperature were restored to similar levels as in the off-pump group, the median microvascular flow index remained reduced after bypass (2.4 [2.3-2.7]) compared with baseline (2.8 [2.7-2.9]; p = 0.021). CONCLUSIONS: Microcirculatory perfusion remained unaltered throughout off-pump surgery. In contrast, microvascular perfusion declined after initiation of cardiopulmonary bypass and did not recover in the early postoperative phase

    Quantitative habitat mapping and description form the basis for understanding the provisioning of ecosystem services and habitat connectivity, and hence provide an essential underpinning for marine spatial planning, management and conservation. Including patch reef habitats, total hard coral-scape habitat for the St. Eustatius Marine Park amounted to about 19% of the area surveyed and about 475 ha of habitat. Sargassum reef habitat typically occurred at the seaward edge of communities dominated by hard coral growth

    Drop-out and mood improvement: a randomised controlled trial with light exposure and physical exercise [ISRCTN36478292]

    BACKGROUND: Combining bright light exposure and physical exercise may be an effective way of relieving depressive symptoms. However, relatively little is known about individual factors predicting either a good response or treatment failure. We explored background variables possibly explaining the individual variation in treatment response or failure in a randomised trial. METHODS: Participants were volunteers of working-age, free from prior mental disorders and recruited via occupational health centres. The intervention was a randomised 8-week trial with three groups: aerobics in bright light, aerobics in normal room lighting, and relaxation/stretching in bright light. Good response was defined as a 50% decrease in the symptom score on either the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) or 8-item scale of atypical symptoms. Background variables for the analysis included sex, age, body-mass index, general health habits, seasonal pattern, and sleep disturbances. RESULTS: Complete data were received from 98 subjects (11 men, 87 women). Of them, 42 (5 men, 37 women) were classified as responders on the HDRS. Overall, light had a significant effect on the number of responders, as assessed with the HDRS (X(2 )= .02). The number needed to treat (NNT) for light was 3.8. CONCLUSIONS: We investigated the effect of bright light and exercise on depressive symptoms. Problems with sleep, especially initial insomnia, may predict a good response to treatment using combined light and exercise. Bright light exposure and physical exercise, even in combination, seem to be well tolerated and effective on depressive symptoms

    Analytical Investigations of Toxic p-Phenylenediamine (PPD) Levels in Clinical Urine Samples with Special Focus on MALDI-MS/MS

    Para-phenylenediamine (PPD) is a common chromophoric ingredient in oxidative hair-dyes. In some African countries like Sudan, Egypt and Morocco but also in India this chemical is used alone or in combination with colouring extracts like Henna for dyeing of the hair or the skin. Excessive dermal exposure to PPD mainly leads to the N-mono- and N,N′-diacetylated products (MAPPD, DAPPD) by N-acetyltransferase 1 and 2 (NAT1 and 2) catalyzed reactions. Metabolites and PPD are mainly excreted via renal clearance. Despite a low risk of intoxication when used in due form, there are numerous cases of acute intoxication in those countries every year. At the ENT Hospital - Khartoum (Sudan) alone more than 300 cases are reported every year (∼10% fatal), mostly caused by either an accidental or intended (suicidal) high systemic exposure to pure PPD. Intoxication leads to a severe clinical syndrome including laryngeal edema, rhabdomyolysis and subsequent renal failure, neurotoxicity and acute toxic hepatitis. To date, there is no defined clinical treatment or antidote available and treatment is largely supportive. Herein, we show the development of a quick on-site identification assay to facilitate differential diagnosis in the clinic and, more importantly, the implementation of an advanced analytical platform for future in-depth investigations of PPD intoxication and metabolism is described. The current work shows a sensitive (∼25 µM) wet chemistry assay, a validated MALDI-MS/MS and HPLC-UV assay for the determination of PPD and its metabolites in human urine. We show the feasibility of the methods for measuring PPD over a range of 50–1000 µM. The validation criteria included linearity, lower limit of quantification (LLOQ), accuracy and precision, recovery and stability. Finally, PPD concentrations were determined in clinical urine samples of cases of acute intoxication and the applied technique was expanded to identify MAPPD and DAPPD in the identical samples

    Fc gamma R binding and ADCC activity of human IgG allotypes

    Antibody dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) is an Fc-dependent effector function of IgG important for anti-viral immunity and anti-tumor therapies. NK-cell mediated ADCC is mainly triggered by IgG-subclasses IgG1 and IgG3 through the IgG-Fc-receptor (Fc gamma R) IIIa. Polymorphisms in the immunoglobulin gamma heavy chain gene likely form a layer of variation in the strength of the ADCC-response, but this has never been studied in detail. We produced all 27 known IgG allotypes and assessed Fc gamma RIIIa binding and ADCC activity. While all IgG1, IgG2, and IgG4 allotypes behaved similarly within subclass, large allotype-specific variation was found for IgG3. ADCC capacity was affected by residues 291, 292, and 296 in the CH2 domain through altered affinity or avidity for Fc gamma RIIIa. Furthermore, allotypic variation in hinge length affected ADCC, likely through altered proximity at the immunological synapse. Thus, these functional differences between IgG allotypes have important implications for therapeutic applications and susceptibility to infectious-, allo- or auto-immune diseases.Proteomic

    Reactive and Regulative Temperament in Youths: Psychometric Evaluation of the Early Adolescent Temperament Questionnaire-Revised

    The present study examined the psychometric properties of the self-report version of the Early Adolescent Temperament Questionnaire-Revised (EATQ-R), which is a scale for measuring reactive and regulative temperament traits, in a large sample of children and adolescents (N = 1,055). The results indicated that the internal consistency was acceptable for most EATQ-R temperament scales. Further, principal components analysis of the instrument yielded a structure with nine components, which generally reflected the temperament scales of the EATQ-R. The test–retest stability of the scale was moderate to good, whereas the parent–child agreement was rather low. Finally, the scale correlated in a theoretically meaningful way with children’s self-reports of personality and psychopathology. It can be concluded that the EATQ-R is a useful scale for measuring aspects of reactive and regulative temperament in children and adolescents, although there is certainly room for improving the instrument
