Biofilm monitoring coupon system and method of use
An apparatus and method is disclosed for biofilm monitoring of a water distribution system which includes the mounting of at least one fitting in a wall port of a manifold in the water distribution system with a passage through the fitting in communication. The insertion of a biofilm sampling member is through the fitting with planar sampling surfaces of different surface treatment provided on linearly arrayed sample coupons of the sampling member disposed in the flow stream in edge-on parallel relation to the direction of the flow stream of the manifold under fluid-tight sealed conditions. The sampling member is adapted to be aseptically removed from or inserted in the fitting and manifold under a positive pressure condition and the fitting passage sealed immediately thereafter by appropriate closure means so as to preclude contamination of the water distribution system through the fitting. The apparatus includes means for clamping the sampling member and for establishing electrical continuity between the sampling surfaces and the system for minimizing electropotential effects. The apparatus may also include a plurality of fittings and sampling members mounted on the manifold to permit extraction of the sampling members in a timed sequence throughout the monitoring period
Field Tests of Kairomones to Increase Parasitism of Spruce Budworm (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) Eggs by \u3ci\u3eTrichogramma\u3c/i\u3e Spp. (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae)
Hexane extracts of spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana, moth scales, applied at 0.04 moth-gram equivalents/branch and at 0.06 moth-gram equivalents/tree, failed to increase parasitism rates of Trichogramma spp. in two cutover spruce-fir stands in Maine. Releasing Maine-strain T. minutum apparently increased parasitism rates about 20-fold. However, application of kairomone extracts to whole branches and to upper crowns of small trees may have interfered with host-searching behaviors of Trichogramma parasitoids
The Japanese Market for Imported Fruit Juices
The objectives were to analyze the competitiveness of countries exporting fruit juices into Japan and simulate the effect of the negative Japanese population growth rate on fruit juice demand. The relative price version of the Rotterdam demand model was estimated for orange, grapefruit, other citrus, apple, pineapple and grape juices. Results indicate that most exporters can’t increase market share through price reductions. Product promotion and product differentiation is a more plausible option. Video guidance sensor for autonomous capture
A video-based sensor has been developed specifically for the close-range maneuvering required in the last phase of autonomous rendezvous and capture. The system is a combination of target and sensor, with the target being a modified version of the standard target used by the astronauts with the Remote Manipulator System (RMS). The system, as currently configured, works well for autonomous docking maneuvers from approximately forty feet in to soft-docking and capture. The sensor was developed specifically to track and calculate its position and attitude relative to a target consisting of three retro-reflective spots, equally spaced, with the center spot being on a pole. This target configuration was chosen for its sensitivity to small amounts of relative pitch and yaw and because it could be used with a small modification to the standard RMS target already in use by NASA
Global Competition for the Japanese Fruit Juice Market: A Uniform Substitute Demand Analysis
This study analyzes the competitiveness of countries exporting fruit juices into Japan through market structure analysis (MSA) within the context of the theory of consumer demand using the relative price version of the Rotterdam model and the block-wise dependent uniform substitute Rotterdam model. The models were estimated for six different types of fruit juices (orange, grapefruit, other citrus, apple, pineapple and grape juices imported from 18 countries) on monthly per capita data over the period December, 1995, to May, 2005, using the non-linear least squares (LSQ) in the Time Series Processor (TSP) program. Results indicate that the market structure underlying the competition for the Japanese fruit juice market is non-uniformly competitive, and most of the cross price elasticities are below one. Consequently, an exporter cant take market share from another exporter quickly through price reductions. Nonetheless, the United States and the Philippines appear to have a competitive advantage in the export of orange and pineapple juices, respectively. Brazil has the most to gain from an increase in the size of the Japanese fruit juice market. The demand for fruit juices imported into Japan is projected to increase at a decreasing rate over the next decade or so because of the absolute decline in population growth. SIZE AND BAG LIMITS IN RECREATIONAL FISHERIES: THEORETICAL AND EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS
Size and bag limits are among the most common forms of regulations for recreational fisheries. In this paper, we theoretically study and compare the short- and long-term impacts of these policies on individual anglers and fish stocks. Particular attention is paid to the issue of release mortality, which can have important consequences for policy effectiveness. Theoretically, we show the conditions under which these policies will be successful in achieving biological objectives. Implications for recreation demand analysis are discussed. The A2667 Giant Arc at z=1.03: Evidence for Large-scale Shocks at High Redshift
We present the spatially resolved emission line ratio properties of a ~10^10
M_sun star-forming galaxy at redshift z=1.03. This galaxy is gravitationally
lensed as a triple-image giant arc behind the massive lensing cluster Abell
2667. The main image of the galaxy has magnification factors of 14+/-2.1 in
flux and ~ 2 by 7 in area, yielding an intrinsic spatial resolution of 115-405
pc after AO correction with OSIRIS at KECK II. The HST morphology shows a
clumpy structure and the H\alpha\ kinematics indicates a large velocity
dispersion with V_{max} sin(i)/\sigma ~ 0.73, consistent with high redshift
disk galaxies of similar masses. From the [NII]/H\alpha\ line ratios, we find
that the central 350 parsec of the galaxy is dominated by star formation. The
[NII]/H\alpha\ line ratios are higher in the outer-disk than in the central
regions. Most noticeably, we find a blue-shifted region of strong
[NII]/H\alpha\ emission in the outer disk. Applying our recent HII region and
slow-shock models, we propose that this elevated [NII]/H\alpha\ ratio region is
contaminated by a significant fraction of shock excitation due to galactic
outflows. Our analysis suggests that shocked regions may mimic flat or inverted

The Complete Jamming Landscape of Confined Hard Discs
An exact description of the complete jamming landscape is developed for a
system of hard discs of diameter , confined between two lines separated
by a distance . By considering all possible local
packing arrangements, the generalized ensemble partition function of jammed
states is obtained using the transfer matrix method, which allows us to
calculate the configurational entropy and the equation of state for the
packings. Exploring the relationship between structural order and packing
density, we find that the geometric frustration between local packing
environments plays an important role in determining the density distribution of
jammed states and that structural "randomness" is a non-monotonic function of
packing density. Molecular dynamics simulations show that the properties of the

Device for quickly sensing the amount of O2 in a combustion product gas
A sensing device comprising an O2 sensor, a pump, a compressor, and a heater is provided to quickly sense the amount of O2 in a combustion product gas. A sample of the combustion product gas is compressed to a pressure slightly above one atmosphere by the compressor. Next, the heater heats the sample between 800 C and 900 C. Next, the pump causes the sample to be flushed against the electrode located in O2 sensor 6000 to 10,000 times per second. Reference air at approximately one atmosphere is provided to the electrode of O2 sensor. Accordingly, the O2 sensor produces a voltage which is proportional to the amount of oxygen in the combustion product gas. This voltage may be used to control the amount of O2 entering into the combustion chamber which produces the combustion product gas

In view of the requirement of verifiability that is demanded by certain philosophical schools, there seems little justification for what are conventionally recognized as theological statements. Certainly no one man has yet succeeded, except perhaps to his own satisfaction, in expressing religious notions in such language and in verifying by such a method that universal consent is gained for the validity of his system. If the charm of empirical verification is not invoked, then for some minds there is little reason to say anything. Obviously, given such rigid requirements for securing a sympathetic audience, theological discussion may find itself standing tongue-tied in the wings while logic and empiricism dominate the stage. But faced with the possibility of the eventual demise of theology, an effort is made to translate religious experience into intellectual terms which are acceptable to these critics. [excerpt
