    Since statistical models are simplifications of reality, it is important in estimation theory to study the behavior of estimators also under distributions (slightly) different from the proposed model. In testing theory, when dealing with test statistics where nuisance parameters are estimated, knowledge of the behavior of the estimators of the nuisance parameters is needed under alternatives to evaluate the power. In this paper the moderate deviation behavior of the (multivariate) maximum likelihood estimator determined within a proposed model is investigated not only under this model, but also under distributions close to the model. The set-up is quite general, including for instance also discrete distributions

    Weibull-type limiting distribution for replicative systems

    The Weibull function is widely used to describe skew distributions observed in nature. However, the origin of this ubiquity is not always obvious to explain. In the present paper, we consider the well-known Galton-Watson branching process describing simple replicative systems. The shape of the resulting distribution, about which little has been known, is found essentially indistinguishable from the Weibull form in a wide range of the branching parameter; this can be seen from the exact series expansion for the cumulative distribution, which takes a universal form. We also find that the branching process can be mapped into a process of aggregation of clusters. In the branching and aggregation process, the number of events considered for branching and aggregation grows cumulatively in time, whereas, for the binomial distribution, an independent event occurs at each time with a given success probability.Comment: 6 pages and 5 figure

    Long-Term Followup after Electrocautery Transurethral Resection of the Prostate for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

    Introduction. For decades, transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) has been the “gold standard” operation for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) but is based mainly on historic data. The historic data lacks use of validated measures and current TURP differs significantly from that performed 30 years ago. Methods. Men who had undergone TURP between 2001 and 2005 were reviewed. International prostate symptom score (IPSS), quality of life (QOL) and peak urinary flow rate (Qmax⁡), and postvoid residual (PVR) were recorded. Operative details and postoperative complications were documented. Patients were then invited to attend for repeat assessment. Results. 91 patients participated. Mean follow-up time was 70 months. Mean follow-up results were IPSS—7; QoL—1.5; Qmax⁡—23 mL/s; PVR—45 mL. These were an improvement from baseline of 67%, 63%, 187%, and 80%, respectively. Early complication rates were low, with no blood transfusions, TUR syndrome, or deaths occurring. Urethral stricture rate was higher than anticipated at 14%. Conclusion. This study shows modern TURP still produces durable improvement in voiding symptoms which remains comparable with historic studies. This study, however, found a marked drop in early complications but, conversely, a higher than expected incidence of urethral strictures

    Percolation in invariant Poisson graphs with i.i.d. degrees

    Let each point of a homogeneous Poisson process in R^d independently be equipped with a random number of stubs (half-edges) according to a given probability distribution mu on the positive integers. We consider translation-invariant schemes for perfectly matching the stubs to obtain a simple graph with degree distribution mu. Leaving aside degenerate cases, we prove that for any mu there exist schemes that give only finite components as well as schemes that give infinite components. For a particular matching scheme that is a natural extension of Gale-Shapley stable marriage, we give sufficient conditions on mu for the absence and presence of infinite components

    Quantum Process Tomography: Resource Analysis of Different Strategies

    Characterization of quantum dynamics is a fundamental problem in quantum physics and quantum information science. Several methods are known which achieve this goal, namely Standard Quantum Process Tomography (SQPT), Ancilla-Assisted Process Tomography (AAPT), and the recently proposed scheme of Direct Characterization of Quantum Dynamics (DCQD). Here, we review these schemes and analyze them with respect to some of the physical resources they require. Although a reliable figure-of-merit for process characterization is not yet available, our analysis can provide a benchmark which is necessary for choosing the scheme that is the most appropriate in a given situation, with given resources. As a result, we conclude that for quantum systems where two-body interactions are not naturally available, SQPT is the most efficient scheme. However, for quantum systems with controllable two-body interactions, the DCQD scheme is more efficient than other known QPT schemes in terms of the total number of required elementary quantum operations.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, published versio

    Maximizing the Conditional Expected Reward for Reaching the Goal

    The paper addresses the problem of computing maximal conditional expected accumulated rewards until reaching a target state (briefly called maximal conditional expectations) in finite-state Markov decision processes where the condition is given as a reachability constraint. Conditional expectations of this type can, e.g., stand for the maximal expected termination time of probabilistic programs with non-determinism, under the condition that the program eventually terminates, or for the worst-case expected penalty to be paid, assuming that at least three deadlines are missed. The main results of the paper are (i) a polynomial-time algorithm to check the finiteness of maximal conditional expectations, (ii) PSPACE-completeness for the threshold problem in acyclic Markov decision processes where the task is to check whether the maximal conditional expectation exceeds a given threshold, (iii) a pseudo-polynomial-time algorithm for the threshold problem in the general (cyclic) case, and (iv) an exponential-time algorithm for computing the maximal conditional expectation and an optimal scheduler.Comment: 103 pages, extended version with appendices of a paper accepted at TACAS 201

    Pulmonary diffusing capacity disturbances are related to nailfold capillary changes in patients with Raynaud's phenomenon with and without an underlying connective tissue disease

    PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether pulmonary microvascular damage is part of a more generalized involvement of the microvasculature in the spectrum of scleroderma (Scl)-like syndromes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We studied four groups of patients, all with Raynaud's phenomenon (RP), distinguished by the extent and nature of their underlying connective tissue disease. Twenty-two patients had primary RP (pRP), another 22 patients had RP and an undifferentiated connective tissue disease (uCTD), 15 patients had Scl, and eight patients had the CREST syndrome (CREST). Pulmonary vascular damage in these groups was assessed by measuring the pulmonary diffusing capacity (T1,CO) and its components: the diffusing capacity of the alveolocapillary membrane (Dm) and the pulmonary capillary blood volume (Vc). Results were compared with morphologic abnormalities of the nailfold capillaries, as determined by nailfold capillary microscopy, and related to the presence of antinuclear antibodies. RESULTS: Vc was below normal in 38% and 43% of patients with pRP and uCTD, respectively (versus 52% in patients with Scl or CREST combined). In contrast, Dm was below normal in only 5% and 26% of patients with pRP and uCTD, respectively (versus 61% in patients with Scl or CREST combined). In patients with Scl and CREST, Dm was significantly decreased as compared with the former groups (p less than 0.01). Dm was also the pulmonary function parameter that correlated most strongly with both nailfold capillary abnormalities and the presence of antinuclear antibodies, whereas Vc did not. CONCLUSION: Early pulmonary involvement in Scl syndromes is functionally characterized by a lowered Dm, correlating with morphologic changes of the nailfold capillaries. Decreased Vc is probably a reflection of RP of the pulmonary vasculature
