    A Numerical-Analytical Hybrid Approach for the Identification of SDM Solar Cell Unknown Parameters

    Appropriate modeling and accurate parameter identification of solar cells are crucial in the optimization of photovoltaic (PV) systems. The single-diode model (SDM), consisting of an ideal current source, an ideal diode, a shunt resistor and a series resistor, is widely used to simulate the behavior of PV cells/panels. In this article, a hybrid approach for identification of solar cell SDM parameters is presented. This approach uses the inverse of the slope of the I-V curve under short-circuit and open-circuit conditions and combines numerical and analytical solutions. Indeed, knowing that numerical methods require appropriate initial values, the main idea of the proposed approach is to provide these solutions by analytical methods. The comparison of obtained results with experimental ones, based on manufacturer’s datasheet, proves that the algorithm thus obtained requires less information from the manufacturer and improves significantly the parameter identification accuracy

    Optimizing enzymatic dyeing of wool and leather

    This work reports on the environmental friendly enzymatic dyeing of wool and leather performed at low temperature and mild pH conditions without any dyeing auxiliaries. The substrates have been dyed with “in situ” generated pigment by means of laccase-catalyzed oxidative coupling of dye modifier 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) and dye precursor 1,3-benzenediol in a batchwise process. The process reaction variables (laccase, precursor and modifier concentrations, temperature and dyeing time) were optimized by response surface methodology using an appropriate experimental design. The temperature, precursor concentration, interaction between precursor and modifier and time are the most important factors in the dyeing process. The best-optimized wool dyeing conditions (2 h reaction time, 50 μl laccase (0.1 U), 500 mM precursor, 10 mM modifier at 40 °C) were then successfully applied onto leather material. The enzymatic-dyeing optimized process can be successfully performed on wool and leather at low temperature and mild pH obtaining different hues and depths of shades by varying the modifier concentration and time. The colouring enzymatic system has a good reusability (which has a huge advantage in terms of cost reduction) and washing durability and is comparable in terms of fastness properties to the traditional dyeing process for both wool and leather.The authors acknowledge the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) for funding the project UID/CTM/00264/2019 and A.     La eficiencia productiva de la agricultura ecológica: el caso del sector de la uva en Cataluña

    Knowledge about productivity and efficiency differences between conventional and organic farms has important implications for the evaluation of the economic viability of these two agricultural practices. The main purpose of this study was to compare the efficiency ratings of organic and conventional grape farms in Catalonia. To do so, we fit a stochastic production frontier to cross sectional, farm-level data collected from a sample of 141 Catalan farms that specialize in grape growing. Results show that organic farmers, on average, are more efficient than their conventional counterparts (efficiency ratings are on the order of 0.80 and 0.64, respectively). Apart from adoption of organic practices, experience is also found to improve technical efficiency. Conversely, technical efficiency tends to decrease with the relevance of unpaid family labor, farm location in less favored areas, and farmers’ strong environmental preservation preferences.Conocer las diferencias de productividad y eficiencia entre la agricultura convencional y la ecológica tiene implicaciones importantes para la evaluación de la viabilidad económica de estas dos prácticas agrícolas. El principal objetivo de este estudio fue comparar la eficiencia técnica de las explotaciones de uva ecológicas y convencionales en Cataluña. Para ello utilizamos el modelo de la frontera de producción estocástica. El análisis se basó en datos de corte transversal de una muestra de 141 explotaciones catalanas especializadas en la producción de uva. Los agricultores ecológicos fueron, de promedio, técnicamente más eficientes que los convencionales (los ratios de eficiencia fueron 0,80 y 0,64, respectivamente). Además de la adopción de técnicas ecológicas, la experiencia también incrementa la eficiencia técnica. En cambio, las explotaciones con una mayor proporción de trabajo no remunerado, que se encuentran en una zona desfavorecida y/o que tienden a tener fuertes preferencias por preservar el medio ambiente, son generalmente menos eficientes

    In this paper, the concept of a non-dominated sorting multi-objective particle swarm optimization with local search (NSPSO-LS) is presented for the optimal design of multimachine power system stabilizers (PSSs). The controller design is formulated as an optimization problem in order to shift the system electromechanical modes in a pre-specified region in the s-plan. A composite set of objective functions comprising the damping factor and the damping ratio of the undamped and lightly damped electromechanical modes is considered. The performance of the proposed optimization algorithm is verified for the 3-machine 9-bus system. Simulation results based on eigenvalue analysis and nonlinear time-domain simulation show the potential and superiority of the NSPSO-LS algorithm in tuning PSSs over a wide range of loading conditions and large disturbance compared to the classic PSO technique and genetic algorithms

    This paper investigates the dynamic relationship and volatility spillovers between cryptocurrency and commodity markets using different multivariate GARCH models. We take into account the nature of interaction between these markets and their transmission mechanisms when analyzing the conditional cross effects and volatility spillovers. Our results confirm the presence of significant returns and volatility spillovers, and we identify the GO-GARCH (2,2) as the best-fit model for modeling the joint dynamics of various financial assets. Our findings show significant dynamic linkages and volatility spillovers between gold, natural gas, crude oil, Bitcoin, and Ethereum prices. We find that gold can serve as a safe haven in times of economic uncertainty, as it is a good hedge against natural gas and crude oil price fluctuations. We also find evidence of bidirectional causality between crude oil and natural gas prices, suggesting that changes in one commodity's price can affect the other. Furthermore, we observe that Bitcoin and Ethereum are positively correlated with each other, but negatively correlated with gold and crude oil, indicating that these cryptocurrencies may serve as useful diversification tools for investors seeking to reduce their exposure to traditional assets. Our study provides valuable insights for investors and policymakers regarding asset allocation and risk management, and sheds light on the dynamics of financial markets

    The evolution of risk premium as a measure for intra-regional equity market integration

    We estimate and test the conditional version of an international capital asset pricing model using a parsimonious multivariate GARCH process and the multivariate nonlinear least squares method. Since our approaches are fully parametric, we can recover any quantity that is a function of the first two conditional moments. Our findings strongly support using a model that includes both regional market and foreign exchange risk. However, both sources of risk are detected only when their prices are allowed to change over time. Our empirical results show clear evidence of market integration to varying degrees, explained by the US term premium and the level of market openness. Though it reaches high values during turmoil periods and exhibits an upward trend toward the end of the estimation period, the Indonesian stock market remains partially integrated into the ASEAN-5 regional market. These results suggest that diversification into Indonesian market assets continues to produce substantial profits and that asset pricing rules should reflect a state of partial integration

    This paper presents a modified formulation for the wind-battery-thermal unit commitment problem that combines battery energy storage systems with thermal units to compensate for the power dispatch gap caused by the intermittency of wind power generation. The uncertainty of wind power is described by a chance constraint to escape the probabilistic infeasibility generated by classical approximations of wind power. Furthermore, a mixed-integer linear programming algorithm was applied to solve the unit commitment problem. The uncertainty of wind power was classified as a sub-problem and separately computed from the master problem of the mixed-integer linear programming. The master problem tracked and minimized the overall operation cost of the entire model. To ensure a feasible and efficient solution, the formulation of the wind-battery-thermal unit commitment problem was designed to gather all system operating constraints. The solution to the optimization problem was procured on a personal computer using a general algebraic modeling system. To assess the performance of the proposed model, a simulation study based on the ten-unit power system test was applied. The effects of battery energy storage and wind power were deeply explored and investigated throughout various case studies
