Enacting Productive Dialogue: Addressing the Challenge that Non-Human Cognition Poses to Collaborations Between Enactivism and Heideggerian Phenomenology
This chapter uses one particular proposal for interdisciplinary collaboration â in this case, between early Heideggerian phenomenology and enactivist cognitive science â as an example of how such partnerships may confront and negotiate tensions between the perspectives they bring together. The discussion begins by summarising some of the intersections that render Heideggerian and enactivist thought promising interlocutors for each other. It then moves on to explore how Heideggerian enactivism could respond to the challenge of reconciling the significant differences in the ways that each discourse seeks to apply the structures it claims to uncover
Transient rectification of Brownian diffusion with asymmetric initial distribution
In an ensemble of non-interacting Brownian particles, a finite systematic
average velocity may temporarily develop, even if it is zero initially. The
effect originates from a small nonlinear correction to the dissipative force,
causing the equation for the first moment of velocity to couple to moments of
higher order. The effect may be relevant when a complex system dissociates in a
viscous medium with conservation of momentum
Symmetry of bound and antibound states in the semiclassical limit
We consider one dimensional scattering and show how the presence of a mild
positive barrier separating the interaction region from infinity implies that
the bound and antibound states are symmetric modulo exponentially small errors
in 1/h. This simple result was inspired by a numerical experiment and we
describe the numerical scheme for an efficient computation of resonances in one
dimension
A new proof of the analyticity of the electronic density of molecules
We give a new, short proof of the regularity away from the nuclei of the
electronic density of a molecule obtained in [1,2]. The new argument is based
on the regularity properties of the Coulomb interactions underlined in [3,4]

First evidence of cryptotephra in palaeoenvironmental records associated with Norse occupation sites in Greenland
The Norse/Viking occupation of Greenland is part of a dispersal of communities across the North Atlantic coincident with the supposed Medieval Warm Period of the late 1st millennium AD. The abandonment of the Greenland settlements has been linked to climatic deterioration in the Little Ice Age as well as other possible explanations. There are significant dating uncertainties over the time of European abandonment of Greenland and the potential influence of climatic deterioration. Dating issues largely revolve around radiocarbon chronologies for Norse settlements and associated mire sequences close to settlement sites. Here we show the potential for moving this situation forward by a combination of palynological, radiocarbon and cryptotephra analyses of environmental records close to three âiconicâ Norse sites in the former Eastern Settlement of Greenland â Herjolfsnes, Hvalsey and GarĂ°ar (the modern Igaliku). While much work remains to be undertaken, our results show that palynological evidence can provide a useful marker for both the onset and end of Norse occupation in the region, while the radiocarbon chronologies for these sequences remain difficult. Significantly, we here demonstrate the potential for cryptotephra to become a useful tool in resolving the chronology of Norse occupation, when coupled with palynology. For the first time, we show that cryptotephra are present within palaeoenvironmental sequences located within or close to Norse settlement ruin-groups, with tephra horizons detected at all three sites. While shard concentrations were small at Herjolfsnes, concentrations sufficient for geochemical analyses were detected at Igaliku and Hvalsey. WDS-EPMA analyses of these tephra indicate that, unlike the predominantly Icelandic tephra sources reported in the Greenland ice core records, the tephra associated with the Norse sites correlate more closely with volcanic centres in the Aleutians and Cascades. Recent investigations of cryptotephra dispersal from North American centres, along with our new findings, point to the potential for cryptotephra to facilitate hypothesis testing, providing a key chronological tool for refining the timing of Norse activities in Greenland (e.g. abandonment) and of environmental contexts and drivers (e.g. climate forcing)
A theoretical study of the C- 4So_3/2 and 2Do_{3/2,5/2} bound states and C ground configuration: fine and hyperfine structures, isotope shifts and transition probabilities
This work is an ab initio study of the 2p3 4So_3/2, and 2Do_{3/2,5/2} states
of C- and 2p2 3P_{0,1,2}, 1D_2, and 1S_0 states of neutral carbon. We use the
multi-configuration Hartree-Fock approach, focusing on the accuracy of the wave
function itself. We obtain all C- detachment thresholds, including correlation
effects to about 0.5%. Isotope shifts and hyperfine structures are calculated.
The achieved accuracy of the latter is of the order of 0.1 MHz.

Cube law, condition factor and weight-length relationships: history, meta-analysis and recommendations
This study presents a historical review, a meta-analysis, and recommendations for users about weightâlength relationships, condition factors and relative weight equations. The historical review traces the developments of the respective concepts. The meta-analysis explores 3929 weightâlength relationships of the type W = aLb for 1773 species of fishes. It shows that 82% of the variance in a plot of log a over b can be explained by allometric versus isometric growth patterns and by different body shapes of the respective species. Across species median b = 3.03 is significantly larger than 3.0, thus indicating a tendency towards slightly positive-allometric growth (increase in relative body thickness or plumpness) in most fishes. The expected range of 2.5 < b < 3.5 is confirmed. Mean estimates of b outside this range are often based on only one or two weightâlength relationships per species. However, true cases of strong allometric growth do exist and three examples are given. Within species, a plot of log a vs b can be used to detect outliers in weightâlength relationships. An equation to calculate mean condition factors from weightâlength relationships is given as Kmean = 100aLbâ3. Relative weight Wrm = 100W/(amLbm) can be used for comparing the condition of individuals across populations, where am is the geometric mean of a and bm is the mean of b across all available weightâlength relationships for a given species. Twelve recommendations for proper use and presentation of weightâlength relationships, condition factors and relative weight are given
Bound States in Mildly Curved Layers
It has been shown recently that a nonrelativistic quantum particle
constrained to a hard-wall layer of constant width built over a geodesically
complete simply connected noncompact curved surface can have bound states
provided the surface is not a plane. In this paper we study the weak-coupling
asymptotics of these bound states, i.e. the situation when the surface is a
mildly curved plane. Under suitable assumptions about regularity and decay of
surface curvatures we derive the leading order in the ground-state eigenvalue
expansion. The argument is based on Birman-Schwinger analysis of Schroedinger

Parameterized optimized effective potential for atoms
The optimized effective potential equations for atoms have been solved by
parameterizing the potential. The expansion is tailored to fulfill the known
asymptotic behavior of the effective potential at both short and long
distances. Both single configuration and multi configuration trial wave
functions are implemented. Applications to several atomic systems are presented
improving previous works. The results here obtained are very close to those
calculated in either the Hartree-Fock and the multi configurational
