    Authentication of Electronic Records: Limitations of Indian Legal Approach

    Paper based documents have inherent authenticity and high evidentiary value for obvious reasons. The documents are permanent record of the contractual relationship of the parties and their contents cannot be so easily altered, modified or changed and even if any change is effected that can be easily detected. This is the reason that the Indian Evidence Act, 1872 excludes oral evidence in presence of documentary evidence. The moot point is that can an electronic record be treated equivalent to paper based record? In other words, can an electronic record have all the properties of the physical document appended with the hand written signature? This is necessitated by the fact that there are different laws in India providing that a contract is not valid unless it is in writing and signed by the parties. An attempt is made in this paper to analyze the provisions prescribing authentication of electronic records in India to demonstrate inherent limitations in them. To overcome these limitations, a new model of authentication is proposed which is based on digital signature combined with time stamping service

    Induction of WNT16 via peptide-mRNA nanoparticle-based delivery maintains cartilage homeostasis

    Osteoarthritis (OA) is a progressive joint disease that causes significant disability and pain and for which there are limited treatment options. We posit that delivery of anabolic factors that protect and maintain cartilage homeostasis will halt or retard OA progression. We employ a peptide-based nanoplatform to deliver Wingless and the name Int-1 (WNT) 16 messenger RNA (mRNA) to human cartilage explants. The peptide forms a self-assembled nanocomplex of approximately 65 nm in size when incubated with WNT16 mRNA. The complex is further stabilized with hyaluronic acid (HA) for enhanced cellular uptake. Delivery of peptide-WNT16 mRNA nanocomplex to human cartilage explants antagonizes canonical β-catenin/WNT3a signaling, leading to increased lubricin production and decreased chondrocyte apoptosis. This is a proof-of-concept study showing that mRNA can be efficiently delivered to articular cartilage, an avascular tissue that is poorly accessible even when drugs are intra-articularly (IA) administered. The ability to accommodate a wide range of oligonucleotides suggests that this platform may find use in a broad range of clinical applications

    EBSD mapping of herringbone domain structures in tetragonal piezoelectrics

    Herringbone domain structures have been mapped using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) in two tetragonal piezoelectrics, lead zirconate titanate, [Pb(Zr,Ti)O<sub>3</sub>] and bismuth ferrite – lead titanate, [(PbTi)<sub>0.5</sub>(BiFe)<sub>0.5</sub>O<sub>3</sub>]. Analysis of the domain misorientations across the band junctions shows that the structures correspond very well to crystallographic models. High resolution mapping with a 20 nm step size allowed the crystal rotation across one of these band junctions in lead zirconate titanate to be studied in detail and allowed an improved estimation of the peak strain at the junction, of 0.56 GPa. The significance of this for crack nucleation and propagation in such materials is discussed

    Protecting and sharing of semantically-enabled, user-orientated electronic laboratory notebook focusing on a case study in the e-science domain

    We discuss the addition to an existing Electronic Laboratory Notebook (ELN) system, a means to permit the sharing of modelling data. One advantage is that sharing of such data is a means of assisting the publication process. This is done by presenting the modelling data and the reasoning behind its creation. This sharing of data is managed in a user sensitive fashion by restricting the release of data based upon the role someone performs. Further sensitivity is shown by fine-grained access control, which permits only part of the ELN to be shown. The performance of the solution presented is reviewed via quantitative analysis that showed a reasonable degree of end-user acceptance of the proposed approach

    Synthesis, structural and photo-physical studies of transition metal complexes with Mannich bases derived from 2-mercaptobenzimidazole

    Two Mannich base ligands, [1-(di-n-butylamine-N-methyl)mercapto-1H-benz-imidazole] (L1) and [1-(diphenylamine-N-methyl)mercapto-1H-benzimidazole] (L2)have been synthesized and further reacted with Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) ionsto afford their respective complexes. The progress of the reaction was monitored by thin layer chromatography. The structural elucidation of Mannich base ligands and their metal complexes was done by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), UV-Visible, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR & 13C NMR) and Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) / Inductively coupled plasma emission spectroscopy (ICPES). FTIR and NMR studies supported the monoanionic bidentate coordination mode of L1 and L2 while tetrahedral geometries of metal complexes were proposed on the basis of AAS/ICP, magnetic moment and electronic spectroscopic data. The synthesized compounds were also investigated for their luminescent behavior which exhibited broad emission bands indicating charge transfer nature of the involved transitions.               KEY WORDS: Metal complexes, Mannich bases, 2-Mercaptobenzimidazole, Luminescence Bull.     Unusual presentation of hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies (HNPP) is an autosomal-dominant painless peripheral neuropathy characterized by episodes of repeated focal pressure neuropathies at sites of entrapment/compression, with a considerable variability in the clinical course. Electrodiagnostic and genetic testing are important in the diagnostic evaluation of these patients.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We report an unusual HNPP phenotype, five compression neuropathies in four nerves in a patient with bilateral hand numbness. A 42-year-old female, presented with acute bilateral paresthesias and weakness in her hands after starting yoga exercises requiring hyperextension of her hands at the wrists. Her presentation was complicated by: a) a remote history of acute onset foot drop and subsequent improvement, b) previous diagnoses of demyelinating peripheral neuropathy, possibly Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, and c) exposure to leprosy. Electrodiagnostic testing showed 5 separate compression neuropathies in 4 nerves including: severe left and right ulnar neuropathies at the wrist, left and right median neuropathies at the wrist and left ulnar neuropathy at the elbow. There was a mild generalized, primarily demyelinating, peripheral polyneuropathy. Based on the clinical suspicion and electrodiagnostic findings, consistent with profound demyelination in areas of compression, genetic analysis was done which identified a deletion of the PMP-22 gene consistent with HNPP.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>HNPP can present with unusual phenotypes, such as 5 separate mononeuropathies, bilateral ulnar and median neuropathies at the wrists and ulnar neuropathy at the elbow with mild peripheral demyelinating polyneuropathy associated with the PMP-22 gene deletion.</p

    Objective Review of Mediastinal Lymph Node Examination in a Lung Cancer Resection Cohort

    Background:Accurate staging of resected lung cancer requires mediastinal lymph node (MLN) examination. MLN dissection (MLND) and systematic sampling (SS) are acceptable procedures; random sampling (RS) and no sampling (NS) are not. Forty percent of US lung cancer resections have NS. We closely examined the pattern of MLN examination in a lung resection cohort.Methods:This is a retrospective review of all lung cancer resections in Memphis, TN, from 2004 to 2007. We compared operating surgeons' claims to the pathology report and an audit of the operation narrative by an independent surgeon.Results:Forty-five percent of resections were reported by surgeons as MLND, 8% RS, and 48% NS. None met pathology criteria for MLND, 9% were SS, 50% were RS, and 42% were NS. The concordance rate between the operating surgeon and pathology report was 39%. The surgeon audit suggested 29% of resections had MLND, 26% RS, and 45% NS. Concordance between operating and auditing surgeons was 71%. Sublobar resection, T1 stage, and age were associated with NS.Conclusions:Most resections had suboptimal MLN examination. Concordance was poor between surgeon claims, objective review of pathology reports, and an independent surgeon audit. The higher concordance between operating and auditing surgeons may suggest incomplete pathology examination of MLN material. The terms used by operating surgeons to describe MLN retrieval were often inaccurate
