Evidence of Early Enrichment of the Galactic Disk by Large-Scale Winds
Large-scale homogeneous surveys of Galactic stars may indicate that the
elemental abundance gradient evolves with cosmic time, a phenomenon that was
not foreseen in existing models of Galactic chemical evolution (GCE). If the
phenomenon is confirmed in future studies, we show that this effect, at least
in part, is due to large-scale winds that once enriched the disk. These set up
the steep abundance gradient in the inner disk (R <14 kpc). At the close of the
wind phase, chemical enrichment through accretion of metal-poor material from
the halo onto the disk gradually reduced the metallicity of the inner region,
whereas a slow increase in the metallicity proceeded beyond the solar circle.
Our "wind+infall" model accounts for flattening of the abundance gradient in
the inner disk, in good agreement with observations. Accordingly, we propose
that enrichment by large-scale winds is a crucial factor for chemical evolution
in the disk. We anticipate that rapid flattening of the abundance gradient is
the hallmarks of disk galaxies with significant central bulges.Comment: 9 pages including 5 figures, accepted for publication in PAS
Multivariable Repetitive-predictive Controllers using Frequency Decomposition
Repetitive control is a methodology for the tracking of a periodic reference signal. This paper develops a new approach to repetitive control systems design using receding horizon control with frequency decomposition of the reference signal. Moreover, design and implementation issues for this form of repetitive predictive control are investigated from the perspectives of controller complexity and the effects of measurement noise. The analysis is supported by a simulation study on a multi-input multi-output robot arm where the model has been constructed from measured frequency response data, and experimental results from application to an industrial AC motor

When the film does not advance, an indicator light is activated. A counter is included in the electronic circuit to determine the number of film frames advanced
Analysis of stability contributions of high dihedral V-tails
An investigation was undertaken to determine the effectiveness of four analytical methods (empirical, modified empirical, vortex-lattice, and an inviscid, three dimensional, potential flow, wing body program) to estimate the lateral and longitudinal static stability characteristics of an isolated V-tail wind tunnel model. The experimental tests were conducted in the V/STOL tunnel at a Mach number of 0.18. Angle-of-attack data were obtained from -12 deg to 8 deg at 0 deg sideslip. Sideslip sweeps from -5 deg to 10 deg were made at angles of attack of 4 deg, 0 deg and -4 deg. The V-tail dihedral angles were 45 deg, 50 deg, 55 deg, and 60 deg
Wind tunnel investigation of an unpowered helicopter fuselage model with a V-type empennage
The applicability of a V-type empennage on an unpowered semiscale helicopter fuselage is considered as design criteria for improved directional control devices. Configuration changes included variations of V-tail dihedral angle, planform area, and incidence angle. Of the configurations tested, a V-tail with a dihedral angle of 55 deg, a total planform area of 0.244 sq cm, and an incidence angle of 5 deg most nearly match the trim and static stability of the baseline conventional empennage
A 2D systems approach to iterative learning control for discrete linear processes with zero Markov parameters
In this paper a new approach to iterative learning control for the practically relevant case of deterministic discrete linear plants with uniform rank greater than unity is developed. The analysis is undertaken in a 2D systems setting that, by using a strong form of stability for linear repetitive processes, allows simultaneous con-sideration of both trial-to-trial error convergence and along the trial performance, resulting in design algorithms that can be computed using Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). Finally, the control laws are experimentally verified on a gantry robot that replicates a pick and place operation commonly found in a number of applications to which iterative learning control is applicable
Ethics and spirituality in the workplace: the growing role of the business case in reforms
This paper amalgamates three inter-related presentations at the conference entitled “Diversity: a Practitioner’s Journey”. Papers addressed issues of employee well-being in the context of political and ethical concerns in the workplace and society at large. Dr Tim Freeman, who chaired the session, has edited a summary of these papers informed by his own research into leadership and the workplace. We start with spirituality and religion in the workplace (Dr Aylin Kunter), followed by workplace diversity (Dr Carlis Douglas) and finally, the ethics of employment deregulation (Dr Ian Roper).
