Physical Measures for Certain Partially Hyperbolic Attractors on 3-Manifolds
In this work, we study ergodic properties of certain partially hyperbolic
attractors whose central direction has a neutral behavior, the main feature is
a condition of transversality between unstable leaves when projected by the
stable holonomy. We prove that partial hyperbolic attractors satisfying
conditions of transversality between unstable leaves via the stable holonomy,
neutrality in the central direction and regularity of the stable foliation
admits a finite number of physical measures, coinciding with the ergodic
u-Gibbs States, whose union of the basins has full Lebesgue measure. Moreover,
we describe the construction of a family of robustly nonhyperbolic attractors
satisfying these properties
Supply chain integration patterns and operational performance: a plant-level survey-based analysis
This study explores the relationship between supply chain integration practices and operational performance through a configurational perspective. The analysis of more than 300 companies reveal that plants implementing only some supply chain integration practices underperform full adopters and, more surprisingly, do not differ from plants that don't adopt any supply chain integration practice
Successful lean implementation: Organizational culture and soft lean practices
This work explores the differences between successful and unsuccessful lean factories in terms of organizational culture dimensions and use of soft lean practices. The analysis of more than 300 factories shows (1) which organizational culture characteristics are peculiar of successful lean factories and (2) that they implement more extensively lean practices concerning people and relations – i.e., soft lean practices
In Defence of Modest Doxasticism About Delusions
Here I reply to the main points raised by the commentators on the arguments put forward in my Delusions and Other Irrational Beliefs (OUP, 2009). My response is aimed at defending a modest doxastic account of clinical delusions, and is articulated in three sections. First, I consider the view that delusions are in-between perceptual and doxastic states, defended by Jacob Hohwy and Vivek Rajan, and the view that delusions are failed attempts at believing or not-quite-beliefs, proposed by Eric Schwitzgebel and Maura Tumulty. Then, I address the relationship between the doxastic account of delusions and the role, nature, and prospects of folk psychology, which is discussed by Dominic Murphy, Keith Frankish, and Maura Tumulty in their contributions. In the final remarks, I turn to the continuity thesis and suggest that, although there are important differences between clinical delusions and non-pathological beliefs, these differences cannot be characterised satisfactorily in epistemic terms. \u
Leveraging fitness and lean bundles to build the cumulative performance sand cone model
Based on a sample of 317 manufacturing companies, this study adopts a structural equation modeling approach to test the relationships between bundles of lean practices and performance. The results of our analyses suggest that there is a sequence of lean practice implementation that permits to improve all the dimensions of operational performance. This study contributes to the academic literature and to practitioners by supporting the idea that a company - to achieve manufacturing excellence - should implement a "sand-cone" of lean practices to obtain a "sand-cone" of cumulative performance
Evidence of Luttinger liquid behavior in one-dimensional dipolar quantum gases
The ground state and structure of a one-dimensional Bose gas with dipolar
repulsions is investigated at zero temperature by a combined Reptation Quantum
Monte Carlo (RQMC) and bosonization approach. A non trivial Luttinger-liquid
behavior emerges in a wide range of intermediate densities, evolving into a
Tonks-Girardeau gas at low density and into a classical quasi-ordered state at
high density. The density dependence of the Luttinger exponent is extracted
from the numerical data, providing analytical predictions for observable
quantities, such as the structure factor and the momentum distribution. We
discuss the accessibility of such predictions in current experiments with
ultracold atomic and molecular gases.Comment: 4 pages, 3 EPS figures, Revtex
Delusional beliefs and reason giving
Delusions are often regarded as irrational beliefs, but their irrationality is not sufficient to explain what is pathological about them. In this paper we ask whether deluded subjects have the capacity to support the content of their delusions with reasons, that is, whether they can author their delusional states. The hypothesis that delusions are characterised by a failure of authorship, which is a dimension of self knowledge, deserves to be
empirically tested because (a) it has the potential to account for the distinction between endorsing a delusion and endorsing a framework belief; (b) it contributes to a
philosophical analysis of the relationship between rationality and self knowledge; and (c) it informs diagnosis and therapy in clinical psychiatry. However, authorship cannot provide a demarcation criterion between delusions and other irrational belief states
Awareness and Sources of Knowledge about Obstructive Sleep Apnea: A Cross Sectional Survey Study
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a multifactorial sleep breathing disorder, seriously impacting quality of life and involving approximately 1 billion of the world’s population. It is characterized by episodes of total cessation of breathing or decreases in airflow during sleep. Available data suggest that most cases of OSA remain undiagnosed even in developed countries. This is due to a lack of widespread knowledge about this pathology and the medical morbidities and mortality it brings about, among both laypeople and physicians. Moreover, despite receiving indications about the need to undergo specific evaluations for OSA signs and symptoms, sometimes patients do not pay sufficient attention to the problem. This is probably due to a lack of correct information on these issues. The present investigation analyzed the level of knowledge about OSA pathology and the sources through which a group of OSA patients gained information on their condition. A survey of 92 patients diagnosed with OSA (mean age 60.55 ± 10.10) and referred to the Unit of Orthodontics and Dental Sleep Medicine of the University of Bologna was conducted by means of a questionnaire investigating sociodemographic characteristics, the level of general knowledge on OSA pathology and its possible medical consequences. Despite about two third (67.38%) of the population demonstrating extensive knowledge, remarkably, a group of subjects (20.65%) had poor awareness of the OSA condition. A statistically significant correlation emerged between the level of knowledge about OSA and the level of education (p = 0.002). A great effort should be made to improve the quality of information and the communication modalities for OSA to enable a fully appropriate awareness of the condition among patients
Early Response to the Plant Toxin Stenodactylin in Acute Myeloid Leukemia Cells Involves Inflammatory and Apoptotic Signaling
Stenodactylin, a highly toxic type 2 ribosome-inactivating protein purified from the caudex of Adenia stenodactyla Harms, is a potential anticancer drug candidate. Previous studies demonstrated that stenodactylin induces apoptosis and necroptosis in treated cells, involving the production of reactive oxygen species. We analyzed the effect of stenodactylin on Raji and Ramos (Human Burkitt’s lymphoma cells) and MOLM-13 (acute myeloid leukemia cells). Moreover, we focused on the early events in MOLM-13 cells that characterize the cellular response to the toxin by whole-genome microarray analysis of gene expression. Treatment with stenodactylin induced the depurination of 28S rRNA within 4 h and increased the phosphorylation of p38 and JNK. A time-dependent activation of caspase 1, 2, 8, 9, 3/7 was also observed. Genome-wide gene expression microarray analysis revealed early changes in the expression of genes involved in the regulation of cell death, inflammation and stress response. After 4 h, a significant increase of transcript level was detectable for ATF3, BTG2, DUSP1, EGR1, and JUN. Increased upstream JUN signaling was also confirmed at protein level. The early response to stenodactylin treatment involves inflammatory and apoptotic signaling compatible with the activation of multiple cell death pathways. Because of the above described properties toward acute myeloid leukemia cells, stenodactylin may be a promising candidate for the design of new immunoconjugates for experimental cancer treatment
