    Novel Perylene-Based Antimicrobial PDI Chromophores

    Get PDF
The main goal of the study was to monitor the Antimicrobial activity of two novel perylene diimides which were synthesized and characterized. Antimicrobial activity was investigated against Four Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains (MT) (Mt-H37Rv, Mt-H37Ra and two clinical isolates) and two Staphylococcus aureus strains [Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Staphylococcus aureus (SA)]. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and minimum bactericidal activity (MBCs) were determined. Both compounds exhibited bactericidal effects and MICs were found to be changing in the range of 48-96 µg/mL for four MT-strains. Compounds were also effective on Staphylococcus strains at MIC = 96 µg/mL

The orange-red pigment from Penicillium mallochii: Pigment production, optimization, and pigment efficacy against Glioblastoma cell lines

The red-orange pigment producer strain Penicillium mallochii (TACB-16) used in this study was isolated from beech tree bark in Balikesir, Turkey, and was identified by molecular methods (P. mallochii Genbank accession number: MG591446). P. mallochii Rivera, Urb & Seifert was first isolated from the caterpillars Rothschildia lebeau and Citheronia lobesis on Costa Rica and is a new record for Turkey. Little is known of this fungus. In this study, the pigment production of P. mallochii on different media was characterised, and the factors affecting the pigment production and efficacy against the human GB cell line T98G cell viability/cytotoxicity were inspected. The results showed that the pigment was resistant to different temperatures and pH values. The -250 base pair of the ITS region was sequenced and submitted to the Genbank. The blast result of the sequence showed that our isolate displayed maximum similarity (100%) to P. mallochii. Glioblastoma (grade-IV astrocytoma, WHO) is the most lethal subtype of glioma and the survival rate of GB patients is still low. Our results suggest that the pigment exhibits anti-proliferative effects on the T98G cell line. The present study is the first to assess the cytotoxic effect of the pigment on the survival of GB cells. Further studies and validations are needed, but we suggest that the pigment might be used for in vitro and in vivo studies, food industry and for future medical drug studies.Research Foundation of Balikesir University (2017/075)Firat University Scientific Research Projects Management Uni

Comparison of Rose-Bengal Chloramphenicol agar and Dichloran Glycerol Agar (DG18) for enumeration and ısolation of moulds from raisins

Two different selective media as Rose-Bengal Chloramphenicol (RBC) Agar and Dichloran Glycerol (DG18) Agar were used for isolation and enumeration of molds from raisin, which is the main economic crop in Turkey and somewhere else. A total of 129 raisin samples were collected randomly during 1998-2000, of 94 were taken from several field vineyards and 35 from two different raisin packaging houses. Although after microbiological examinations no significant differences were found in relation with their fungal count (p>0,05), there was a marked variation (p<0.05) in terms of fungal diversity between the two media. Thus 53 species belonging six genera were obtained with DG 18 agar, whereas 74 species from 12 genera with RBC agar. There were 39 species common in the two media. the results warrant the need to use two selective media with different moisture or water activity in order to isolate and/or enumerate a more representative mycoflora including toxigenic and/or pathogenic from raisins

Five Aspergillus Fr.:Fr. species and 3 varieties were described from the point of view of colonial and morphological characteristics. These species and varietes are isolated from soil, grape and sultana raisins from vineyards in Manisa and Izmir provinces (Turkey). These are as follows: A. flavofurcatus Bat. ;amp; H.Maia, A. heteromorphus Bat. ;amp; H.Maia, A. pulverulentus (McAlpine) Wehmer, A. unguis (Emile-Weil ;amp; L.Gaudin) Thom ;amp; Raper, A. viridinutans Ducker ;amp; Thrower, A. foetidus Thorn ;amp; Raper var. pallidus (Nakaz., Simo ;amp; A.Watan.) Raper ;amp; Fennell, A. foetidus Thorn ;amp; Raper var. acidus (Nakaz., Simo and A.Watan.) Raper ;amp; Fennell and A. nidulans (Eidam) G.Winter var. acristatus Fennell ;amp; Raper. The final 2 are cited for the first time in Turkey.Bu çalışmada beş Aspergillus Fr:Fr türü ve üç varyetesi koloni ve morfolojik özellikleri bakımından tanımlanmıştır.
